1st night of the Democratic Convention Open Thread. Update!

I thought I would kick this thread off with that awesome video from Last Week Tonight, just for shits and giggles.

So here we are on the first night of the convention. I know some things have already happened earlier today so feel free to post and talk about them here as well.

Like this chanting of Bernie's name earlier in the evening.
Or this reaction when Sanders attempted to talk to his supporters earlier in the day:

Sanders, speaking later to his delegates in Philadelphia, was booed when he urged supporters to block Trump in the Nov. 8 election by backing Clinton and her vice presidential running mate, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia.

"Brothers and sisters, this is the real world that we live in," he said, adding, "Trump is a bully and a demagogue."

Members of the crowd screamed back: “So is Hillary.” "She stole the election!" someone else shouted.

Some people are having a serious problem dealing with reality right now.

As for the rest of the night, well grab your popcorn and your beverage of choice and let's allow the democracy to wash over us and remove the stench of last week's RNC convention from our pores.

Update: The Sanders supporters even heckled Elijah Cummings!

Courtesy of Think Progress:

Loudly and angrily chanting “no TPP,” Bernie Sanders supporters drowned out Democratic National Convention platform chair Elijah Cummings (D-MD) as he spoke on Monday night about the platform that he and many Democrats call the most progressive in history.

Opponents of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and fracking, supporters of Palestine, and others frustrated with portions of the Democratic platform — dozens of people in the Wells Fargo Arena — chanted together as Cummings spoke from the convention stage. Many of those same delegates later shouted “nay” when convention leaders put the platform up for a vote.

I am so fucking done with these Bernie Bros I cannot even see straight at this point.

That is fucking Elijah Cummings! The man is a mainstay of Democratic politics and has been fighting the Republicans in the House, and defending the progressive agenda, since 1995.

He is a goddamn hero!

Update 2: This was my favorite speech of the night so far.

(I plan to post the entire thing tomorrow.)

Update 3:
You tell them Sarah!

Update 4: And then at the end of the night.
Finally.

The DLC and DNC Hijacked the Democratic party far to the Right in the 1980s led by the Clintons and Gore and their ilk.

NOT all Democrats like where the party's been since--doing Wall Street's and corporate bidding at the expense of the middle and working classes. Even the Republicans want to put back the Glass Steagal Act --the last banking firewall from the New Deal Democrats that was repealed by Bill Clinton and helped take down the world economy. But Hillary and the "centrists" oppose putting it back and with Kaine they've moved right back into Wall Streets' corner and far from Sanders' supporters and agenda.

Good luck to this country with both parties sold out and or demolished from within and without. So blame the "hippies" and other protesters for being angry their country has been sold off to the bankers.

And in case you're wondering I come from generations of Democrats and have been voting longer than many of you have been alive. I can tell you succinctly the Democratic party was SOLD out as above. Read what Elizabeth Warren really has to say about the the political morass that the Clinton Democrats and the Republicans preside over in Washington, or read Willaim Black the bank examiner.

At least understand why many Democrats (and others) are angry with the takeover of the party by DLC Democrats (beholden to Wall St.)and the subsequent wrecking of the economy because it's not going to stop until REAL economic reform comes to the country and that won't come from Trump or Hillary.

Not a word about civil rights, 6:09. Not a word about fighting against sexism and racism. Not a word about consistent and die hard support for reproductive rights. Not a word about making things better for the GLBT community. The singular focus on the economy is a large part of why Sanders didn't get more votes.

    5. Anon 6:09: I bet I have been voting as long as you, if not longer. I have never been one to vote strict party lines until 2012. I suspect that many of the Bernie or Bust peeps, are Trump antagonist, and it was apparent when they turned on Bernie. The Democratic Party may have gone center right but, the Republicans have gone off shit cliff.

You sound very much like a sane person wanting the best for our Nation. Perhaps it was bernie that sold you a bill of goods. In no way shape or form was bernie ever in a million years and eons stacked on top of that ever going to be president. That bernieites were hornswaggled by bernie is a horrendous thing to wrap one's mind around so, I suggest you get started on that.

8:28 I never thought Bernie would be president. Third party movements bring change and fresh ideas into the mainstream as did T. Roosevelt's Progressive party usher in the way for the later New Deal reforms that brought the US economic justice and a middle class after the era of the robber barons in the 1800s had created the kind of wealth disparity we have now. Perhaps it's time for some new political parties that are responsive to the people not corporations.

If you look back to the neoliberal economics that replaced the New Deal policies (starting in the 1970s) you can trace the downward economic spiral not just for the US but for the world--and the Clinton Democrats are part of that--the bankers and other unelected groups are calling the shots. This is well-documented and by no means is Sanders the only person who has seen it and called it out.

@7:35 Bernie actually marched in the 1960s which was Civil Rights movement when people were killed for doing so. Whereas Hillary and Bill Clinton (signed) and supported crime legislation that was passed in the 1990s that has disproportionately locked up people of color.

Patti: I agree the Republican party has imploded. The Dem leadership is in the pocket of the corporations so little effective change will happen if Hillary gets the WH. We need deep political reform in our country. You may be right about Repub agitators at the convention but but the anger against the status quo candidates is real and protests are inevitable given the way much of the populations feels.

@8:14 DLC--Democratic Leadership Council--thye group of conservative Southern Democrats that took over the Dem party in the 1980s and steered it to the right by courting Big Money. No0 longer exists but its prime members like Clintons and Gore are still running the party.

I am a REAL Bernie supporter- and I am SUPPORTING my candidate by doing what he has beseeched the American people to do- block the constitutional, ecological, and funancial un-lubed buttfuck that a trump win would be for us all, and GET OUT THE VOTE FOR HILLARY. @5:30PM The problem is that it works both ways. I liked both candidates, went with Clinton. Even though my candidate lost hugely to Sanders in my state, I ended up volunteering to help put on the State Democratic Convention. Bernie supporters decided to chant and be rude to our INVITED speakers, and the whole thing ended up being so stressful for me that I haven't volunteered for the local Democrats since.

The Bernie supporters love to threaten us older folks with their abandonment of the Democratic Party if they don't get everything that their losing candidate (as in he had a lot less votes, superdelegates NOT included) wanted. However, the incredibly immature and rude behavior is a major turn off to my generation. Have you ever considered that you may alienate US from the liberal cause?

As far as I can tell, the time is past for the Bernie people to make their points with chanting, rudeness, and threats. We need to come together and defeat Trump. Then you guys can put Bernie forward again next time, or find someone new. And you'll hopefully have been involved all along instead of showing up at the last second complaining about the rules, and you will maybe have helped change the rules in a meaningful, thoughtful and civilized manner, instead of alienating all of us old fart liberals (50 & 60 yr. olds) whom you certainly cannot get single payer health insurance, etc. without our votes.

Keep in mind that a Trump presidency could fuck up the Supreme Court for twenty years (Citizens United, reproductive rights, etc.)...........so this is not the time to vote "the fascist" in just to save face.

Unity is the only reasonable approach for liberals at this point, whether we like each other or not!

If his supporters want to prove their Democratic credentials, they should get on board and act like Democrats once the roll call is over. My only fear is that so many of them are totally clueless about American history and party politics. They seem to think it's all corrupt if it isn't going 100% their way.

After the bad taste Donald's reality show left in everyones' mouth last week this convention is like a breath of fresh air! Look at the audience for one - all colors! The only minorities the RNC had were Donald's tokens to be showed off on stage.

Notice something Sarah? Unlike you and Donald there is no hate speech. You might want to learn something from that. But too late you've thrown all your chips in on a losing team.

When I watched the crowd do what they did to Cummings, I was furious. I seriously doubt that many of those in the crowd knew the history of the outstanding man before them!

I'd like to have stood the crowd up - in lines - where each had to parade themselves in front of the cameras and state their names, city and state!

Fuck them! Wish I could say what I'd really like to do to each one of them. They showed themselves to be just as bad as Donald Trump and don't have a fucking clue!

They are NOT welcome to even be sitting in that hall as far as I'm concerned. Hope their bleachers fall out from under their sorry asses before the night is over...they are still doing their anti stuff - even to Booker! Loved how he kept talking over them and raised his voice substantially!

I mean, so what if they're not religious or are atheist (I am). You don't show such complete disrespect to a room of people who are praying and talk over--yell over, and do it forever--the person there to say the prayer aloud. Geez, that was so low. I'm surprised they didn't yell down the young woman in the wheelchair who talked about Hillary.

Hillary didn't win by acclimation. It was a long fight and Saunders should be respected for what he accomplished and be given his due by having his votes counted on the first round. The delegates representing the people who voted for him should have their voices heard. Otherwise their votes are meaningless. It would be the final insult to ignore them and that's bad considering we are trying to unite the party right now. Sanders did his part in his speech. Let the votes be counted. Otherwise it would undo everything and it will only get worse.

I might also add....what are you afraid of? Why do you want to deny people their votes?

The Democrats usually have a full roll call. It's a tradition.

I only hope that the Bernie supporters quiet down today so that speakers can be heard. Their rudeness, which I think comes from the fact that many of them haven't got a clue about just how liberal and progressive Democrats have been through the decades. They showed no respect to people who brought this country civil rights and who guided this country through very troubled times. Their behavior was disturbing to this old Democrat whose parents fought for people like themselves, working class Americans. I hope they paid some attention to the Mario Cuomo clips from 1984 - lots of very liberal beliefs, even back then. Just imagine - before many of them had been born.

Hopefully, the Bernie supporters have gotten it out of their systems now and will begin to focus on defeating the GOP and keeping the White House and regaining the Senate and House and as many state and local offices as possible. Nothing happens if people simply pout and whine. Let's hope the pouting and whining are over so the real work can begin.

i just watched Michelle Obama's speech and you know she will be critized for saying the White House was built by slaves.

It was an impassioned speech showing hope an optimism. America is now great it has never , ever, lost it's greatness or resolve.

While Trump portrays America as weak because we are willing to listen, because we are willing to work things out instead of going full blown war.Trump is that kind of idiot mistakes power as a trigger on a gun.

You can kill a Country by wars depleting it's resources. War is an option but never ever go into it unless it is the last option. Negotiations are not weak they are a sign of strength.

As Queen Elizabeth the first said, war is expensive and the outcome is uncertain. Is Trump willing to nuke? No way am i willing to let an ego maniac like Trump represent the United States Of America! He is way to thin skinned he does not possess the tough metal needed.

Good God look at his tweets, nick names that's all he has.

I want policy. I know we live in the age of Kardashion's and Palin's and Trump who base their lives on looks. Here's reality folks real people are struggling, real people want a job that pays a living wage. And while we see so many people look at TRUMP AS SOME KIND OF CHAMPION all the while having his clothes made in China saying he will bring jobs back! It's enough to make you puke.

Recently I watched the PBS history of the White House and learned a lot about its occupants and came away in awe of its history. I particularly like the fact that Harry Truman, during whose presidency the building had to be rebuilt, did not want the exterior touched, although it had been advised that it be demolished. I think he wanted to preserve all of the house's history including the fact that slave labor was instrumental in building this beautiful house, the largest in the fledgling United States. I am also proud that he visited the site every day, intent that no unnecessary changes be made. Again, I think he was honoring all that went into its initial construction. Thank you, Harry Truman.

Actually that is exactly what you're saying, telling the Bernie supporters in the most insulting terms that their votes aren't needed is exactly what has been said for weeks. Months even. Along with much worse.

Personally, I'm tired of the continued bashing. Even after Bernie's speech tonight, when he gave everyone exactly what they wanted, he's still being criticized and his supporters are still being attacked. "It will be your fault if Trump wins". "We're sick of your friggin' arrogance." Yeah, that's a great way to mend fences and woo votes.

It's all on the Hillary panty sniffers now. If they want to continue to get their jollies by bullying and insulting Bernie's supporters then they have only themselves to blame if Bernie's supporters react as any human being would and say fuck you and stay home.

(And you don't think MSNBC only used the most crazy interviews to push their Bernie's people are crazy meme? Since when did you start believing everything you see on TV?)

As far as I'm concerned, after tonight, if Hillary loses, it's on her, her supporters and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Bernie loved his personal Secret Service detail.

He loved it when they ran through red-lights with their sirens and flashing lights from their motorcade.

He loved it when the Secret Service followed him around at the Capitol.

Bernie loved the attention so much that even though he knew he lost the election, Bernie would not give up his Secret Service detail and motorcade whisking him and Jane around at $38,000 a day.

Now Sanders wants to hear the cheers as roll call is made tomorrow at the DNC.

I guess anything to make an old man happy.

Will he be re-playing videos of his glory days much like Gloria Swanson & Sarah Palin? ha ha maybe that's why Sarah invested in worthless property in Arizona with a huge theater. Guess she'll have to make do with whatever Fox gave her to set up a studio in her garage.

Oh baloney. He was everything Ted Cruz was not, just like Michelle was every Melania was not (but not for lack of trying), and just like Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama will be everything that Bush 1 and Bush 2 would have been if either had bothered to show up.

It was reported last night on PBS that Bernie sent a text to his supporters telling them to act like adults and not disrupt the convention and embarrass his campaign.

As much as I am sick of hearing about his revolution I thought he gave a very good speech and gave all the reasons why his supporters need to get it together and vote for Hillary.

Bernie had his night, now it is time for Bernie bots to move on and get with the agenda to defeat Trump.

If he does what he said he would, Bernie is on board with Hillary.

I am so tired of the meanness in our country. I thought we were working toward respect for each other, as evidenced by the speakers yesterday, and the party of everybody working together to get things done -- not part of the Ugly Americans in the eyes of the rest of the world..... please, let's try very hard not to sink to the new Republican level.

Jane: It was fun while it lasted. Do I have to go out and get a job now?

Bernie: No! You are still on the Sanders' campaign payroll as the Senior Campaign Advisor until all the $27s are laundered.

Jane: So that means I'm like the Sarah Palin of Vermont?
