Man suspected of shooting six Baton Rouge police officers, killing three, has been identified as Gavin Long. Update!

I held off blogging about this because there still so little information that was available about the shooter or his motivation.

However now we know that the suspect's name is Gavin Long from Kansas City, who may have been with a group of others from Missouri that the police were already on the lookout for.

We also know that police responded to a call about a man walking down the street with an assault rifle, and when they arrived three were shot and wounded and three others were killed at the scene.

The shooter, Gavin Long, was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Here is some amateur video taken during the shooting.

It does not show very much but you can hear the shots being fired.

As of this post I do not yet know the shooter's ethnicity, but I have read that he was wearing black clothing and a mask to hide his identity.

There is also some talk on MSNBC that the shooter might be associated with the sovereign citizen's movement, but that has not been confirmed by law enforcement.

I will update this post as new details come in.

Update: The President weighs in on the shooting.
Gee, I wonder who he was talking to there Donald?

I have read in a number of places that folks are trying to blame this on President Obama and, as you saw here earlier, liberals.

Apparently in the opinion of those folks if you speak out against police violence you are responsible for encouraging attacks on police.

Just to be clear I condemn both of those acts.

Update 2: Courtesy of the Wall Street Journal:

The alleged gunman, who was killed by police, has been identified as 29-year-old Gavin Long, according to a person briefed on the investigation. The suspect was from Missouri and was affiliated with an antigovernment group called the New Freedom Group, the person added.

Wow, so it is an anti-government group. That is going to force the pro-gun folks to take a pause before making a statement about this.

Update 3: Reporters trying to gather information have to start wearing bullet proof vests.
Certainly sounds like the right address.

Update 4: Okay NOW we know the ethnicity of the shooter:

The suspect has been identified as a black male named Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri, sources tell CBS News. He was born on July 17, 1987.

That whooshing sound you here is the NRA breathing a giant sigh of relief.

Update 5: Always the wrong tone from Donald Trump.

You know I think that he deserves some of the responsibility for the friction we are seeing right now.

Not the President.

According to Marine Corps records, Long had a conventional tour in the Marines. He served for five years and retired as a sergeant in August 2010 with an honorable discharge. During that time, he was trained as a data network specialist and attended the Marine School of Infantry, indicating that he received infantry training. He also served as a communications specialist in Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009 and served in Okinawa with the 3rd Marine Air Wing. Nothing in the records indicates any disciplinary actions against him.

Donald Trump addressed the systemic problem of unbalance when he stated “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”

It is likely he would not be arrested, if he was he would not have to spend a night in jail nor would he be found guilty regardless of the evidence making it clear that he shot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue.

As President, not a racist Donald Trump will be caring about veterans like Michah Johnson and Gavin Long. Along with his inspirational and sympatico pal Sarah Palin. Together they demonstrate their take on troubled veterans and guns.

“I can talk personally about this. I guess it’s kind of the elephant in the room — because my own family, going through what we’re going through today with my son, a combat vet having served in a Stryker brigade fighting for you all, America, in the war zone. But my son, like so many others, they come back a bit different. They come back hardened,” Palin said.

Before all of the facts were even in following the shooting deaths of three Baton Rouge policemen on Sunday, the head of Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association blamed President Barack Obama for the spate of cop killings.

Detective Steve Loomis, who made national headlines when he called 12-year-old Tamir Rice “menacing” after the pre-teen was gunned down in 2014 by a fellow Cleveland cop, was quick to get on the phone with Fox News and tell the country that Obama has “blood on his hands.”

...When it comes to leadership, Loomis has a history of standing up for cops who shoot unarmed blacks, including Rice who was playing with a toy gun in a Cleveland park only to be shot and killed by officer Timothy Loehmann within two seconds after he opened the door of his police cruiser.

A Conservative's Lament: 'The Republican Party Is Going To Cleveland To Die'

...Domenech, however, laid down the hard truth.

“The Pence pick does not change the fact that the Republican Party is now the party of Donald Trump,” he said, while Schlapp insisted he was wrong.

“A hundred and fifty years ago this party was begun by Abraham Lincoln on the idea that Constitutional rights were not bound by race or creed. That the American eagle’s wings were broad enough to accept all that would come here. Now, this party is coming to Cleveland to die,” Domenech continued.

“This is not the party of Abraham Lincoln anymore. It is the party of Donald Trump. It has traded statesmanship for xenophobia,” he said alluding to Trump’s ban on Muslims. “It has traded free markets for protectionism. It has traded the higher principles of our better angels for the belief in party identity politics. That is why they are getting zero percent of the black vote in Pennsylvania. That is why you’re going to continue to see this kind of race-baiting approach to politics. I think it’s completely true that this is the end of the party of Lincoln.”

With Obama, the Personal Is Presidential

We always knew he could keep his head when others were losing theirs and blaming him, knew it from the 2008 financial crisis and on to the hard, lasting words he spoke at Tuesday’s memorial for the slain police officers in Dallas.

What we didn’t know, what could not be predicted of one so young and new to the impossible task of living round-the-clock under the glare of the entire world, was how Barack Obama would hold up as a father, a husband, a man.

No matter what you think of Obama the executive branch, it’s hard to argue that Obama the human being has been anything less than a model of class and dignity. If, as was often said about black pioneers in sports, you had to be twice as good to succeed, Obama’s personal behavior has set a standard few presidents have ever reached.

...You see him teasing, bantering or dancing with his wife of nearly a quarter-century. And while no outsider can know what goes on inside another’s marriage, you can’t help feeling some of the joy of that union. They still finish each other’s sentences.

It’s not fair to give him his due as a person, his high grade for character, for being scandal-free in his private life, just because a potential successor has no character, no class, and breaches a new wall of civility every time he opens his mouth. If Obama had bragged about infidelities and the size of his genitals, if Obama had talked about wanting to date his own daughter and reduced women to a number on a hotness scale, it would be about race. But when Donald Trump says such things, nobody ties it to his being white, nor should they. Trump is a singular kind of vulgarian.

      ===============

Barack Obama is officially one of the most consequential presidents in American history

Love him or hate him, Barack Obama is one of the most consequential presidents in American history — and that he will be a particularly towering figure in the history of American progressivism.

He signed into law a comprehensive national health insurance bill, a goal that had eluded progressive presidents for a century. He got surprisingly tough reforms to Wall Street passed as well, not to mention a stimulus package that both blunted the recession and transformed education and energy policy.

He's put in place the toughest climate rules in American history and signed a major international climate accord. He opened the US to Cuba for the first time in more than half a century, and reached a peaceful settlement to the nuclear standoff with Iran.

You can celebrate or bemoan these accomplishments. Liberals hail them as moves toward a social democratic welfare state and a foreign policy more skeptical of military intervention; conservatives critique Obama's efforts to expand regulation and the government's reach, and accuse him of abdicating America's role as world hegemon.

But no one can deny that the changes Obama has wrought are enormous in scale.

Donald Trump and Mike Pence: The Political Reality Show

...For Mr. Pence’s audition in Indianapolis this week, he made a speech introducing Mr. Trump as a man who has “never forgotten or forsaken the people who work with their hands.” That’s surprising, since Mr. Trump’s record of forsaking working people is rather long. Maybe it’s really Pence. So Trump rallies up the angry base, but he is coy about whether he really wants to be president. He generates non-stop media hype, but he may not actually have an inclination to govern. He hosts a convention of circus barkers and show ponies, but it’s all smoke and mirrors. A diversion. A Trojan Horse.

Maybe the plan is for Trump to win the nomination, and then step aside — “for personal reasons.” That way, he avoids the bother of learning how things work in the world, or negotiating with Congress, or engaging in diplomacy with other world leaders. He steps down, and suddenly he is in a great position to cash in on a million favors, which is where he always likes to be.

Meanwhile Pence, the most extreme conservative on the GOP roster, so radical he could never have gotten traction as a fringe candidate in the GOP primary, becomes president. He picks up the uber-conservative platform the GOP is busily devising, and charges ahead.

The Trump/Pence 60 Minutes Interview Was A Painful Train Wreck

....The interview was a trainwreck tribute to the ego of Donald Trump, who made it clear that he was in charge and that the spotlight was always to be on him at all times.

If Republicans were looking for someone who could make Trump seem less crazy, Mike Pence is not the guy. If anything, Trump is becoming even more insane because now he is acting like Pence is competition, not a partner.

The lack of chemistry between Pence and Trump was obvious that one wonders if they had ever really spoken to each other before Pence was added to the ticket.

There probably isn’t going to be a VP bounce for Trump/Pence, in fact, this ticket looks doomed.

So evident;y Chuckles Todd called the President's speech 'a lecture.' Gee, Chuckie, maybe it's time the GOP got a nice lecture on truth, justice, the real causes of gun violence (uh, GUNS) and how to prevent this happening every freakin' day with the NRA pushing assault weapons on the entire populace, and stoking the fear of cops with every tweet. The GOP is taking this country down. Let's take them down first. In November.

I wonder how much he has been a part of hangings that have been done to many members of the black race - i.e. KKK? If nothing else - through his money and racist, evil words throughout the years?

He has verbally done nothing but discriminate against them since he started this run! And, I'm sure he's been way worse before we caught up with his thoughts and actions.

Can anyone else visualize Trump as a plantation owner owning slaves? I can!

I know he is already basically doing that via hiring very cheap labor from China and Mexico to enhance his various businesses!

He assuredly isn't fit to run America!

He is spreading racism, hate, fear, war and has shown himself to be nothing but an ill- equipped bully!

I can hardly wait until this race is over and he has to crawl to his home in the big building with the insignia Trump. He will be an embarrassment to their city!

President Obama spoke again about unity today during his remarks on the tragic killing of three Baton Rouge police officers. He said, “Only we can prove, in our own actions and words, that we will not be divided, even if we have to do it again and again and again.”

The President does this every day, even though he’s ruthlessly attacked on a daily basis, the color of his skin being such a problem for a certain segment of people that they can’t seem to see the man he really is — a dignified, calm leader who has been a role model in many ways, including being the best family values leader we’ve had in a long time.

Donald Trump responded to President Obama's calls for toned-down political rhetoric and less divisiveness after the Baton Rouge police shootings by openly hoping for more division and hate.

Il Douche and his running mate are being interviewed. Pence voted FOR going into Iraq, same thing Hillary did. It's ok if he does it, if she does it it's stoopid. Someone wipe the maalox spittle from his prep h'ed lips, he's giving orangutans a bad name.

I've been riveted by this story all day, LA Pierre has been quiet all day. This is what hate crimes are like with open carry and easy access to weapons of war.

It makes me worry about the RNC, but they're a bunch of hypocrites. It's open carry, but guns aren't allowed in the arena. Why the change? Isn't it their right to carry guns? They're all chicken shit when it comes to everyone else, when it comes to them and their own families, they suspend the second amendment.

He never offer any solutions except some slogan like "law and order candidate" just like Tricky Dick "I am not a crook" Nixon.

So just what is his law and order solution? Martial law?

Who knows because no one in the press asks him to tell us his plan, since he is some much smarter than Obama, surely he must have a plan. National Guard? Troops? Genocide?

It appeared they deleted the part where Donald said he didn't 'need' Mike as was reported before the airing.

Mike was sucking up The Donald's asshole big time! Those two are going to be a joke. Mike has sold his soul (to Hell) and he supposedly is a strong Christian! My ass! Donald even said he was religious in the interview.

Pardon me while I throw up! How many wives and affairs has the jerk had? How has he sold sex and sexualized women throughout his years? He would be the very worst POTUS and hopefully, he will not be elected and sent back to NY City to his gold and silver environment/home!

    3. Anonymous7:36 AM

Both rewriting history and propaganda are vital to those in power. George W. and Dick Cheney would not have all that blood on their hands if not for the propaganda. Now they depend on rewriting. Now I am hearing people say things like the Iraq war has come to American soil. We are at war here right here. If there were not serious tensions, like race tensions, race issues would not look, feel or start a war.

Charlie Manson was the first famous guy to support a war, a race war, that I recall.
Not all warmongers are as open and vocal as Charlie on the subject.
      https://timedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/charles-manson-02.jpg?quality=75&strip=color&w=446

The real story is even more fascinating than the mythology.

..he lied almost completely about his childhood.
..as a boy little Charlie was indulged rather than abused.
..from his first days in school, he exhibited the same tendencies toward violence.
..Manson participated in a Dale Carnegie course and later used the techniques he learned there to recruit and control his "Family" of young men and women.
..his supposedly mystical ability to read minds and make others do his bidding was cribbed directly from How to Win Friends and Influence People. He also stole ideas from Scientology and passages from the Bible.

LOL... Businessman Donald Trump and wife Ivana, author Norman Vincent Peale and wife Ruth Peale, Phyllis George and Governor John Brown attend 90th Birthday Party for Norman Vincent Peale on May 26, 1988 at the Waldorf Hotel in New York City.

It disturbs me to think how much the GOP and Donald Trump way want chaos at the convention. I'm also surprised that the GOP ever chose Cleveland for their convention's venue. They knew full well that the police murder of the young boy at least two years ago is still an open sore for the African American community there as well as for thinking, caring people everywhere in this country.

What happened in Dallas and then yesterday in Baton Rouge feeds straight into the racist and totalitarian aims of Donald Trump, our nativist fascist leader in the making. It is so disturbing to think how, with the help of the mainstream media, the mean-spirited GOP base will lap up any disturbances in Cleveland and blame them all on President Obama and Hillary Clinton. And I have to wonder if the perpetrators of both crimes, in Dallas and in Baton Rouge, weren't deliberately feeding into the maw of Trump's grand plan for the United States. Didn't either of these men think of the consequences of their senseless actions? Were they so incapable of clear thought that it did not dawn on either of them that they were not helping to improve anything for their fellow African Americans but making life much worse for them? Not capable of rational thinking but still capable of planned, carefully executed murder with weapons whose only purpose on earth is to kill human beings.
