Bernie Sanders buys $600,000 summer home in Vermont, while continuing to accept donations for his "revolution."

Courtesy of The Hill:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has purchased a nearly $600,000 summer retreat on Vermont’s Champlain Islands, the Vermont newspaper Seven Days reported Monday.

“We’ve traveled up to the islands many times over the years — almost always on day trips,” Jane Sanders, the former White House contender's wife, said in a statement. "The entire family is very excited about it.”

The Sanders family also owns a row house on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and a house in Burlington, Vt..

Well for a Democratic Socialist Bernie does pretty well for himself.

But where does this kind of money come from?

(Update: According to Snopes the money for this house came from the sale of a house they inherited. That information was not readily available when I wrote this post several hours ago, and I apologize for anything misleading I may have insinuated. However instead of deleting it I will leave it here as I think the second part down below is still worthy of conversation.)

 Courtesy of the Washington Post:

When he endorsed Hillary Clinton and spoke on her behalf at the somewhat-contentious Democratic convention last month, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) pledged "to do all that I can" to make sure she defeated Donald Trump this fall. Since the convention, his new group, "Our Revolution," seems to be devoting its energy to … defeating the Democratic Party establishment that backed Clinton.

Sanders has sent at least two emails to his army of grass-roots supporters since the convention ended, asking for money to continue his "revolution," a critical element of his primary-season pitch. The emails mentioned the Democratic National Committee, former committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), the Democratic Party, and the Democratic establishment multiple times. They did not mention Clinton, Trump or the Republican Party (which would need to suffer a crushing defeat for Democrats to gain the majority Sanders would need for his progressive priorities to make it through Congress.)

I'm just going to leave this here without comment.

After all I wouldn't want to be accused of being a "Bernie Sanders hater" now would I?

Update 2: By the way if the Sanders' sold a house they inherited why did that money not go towards funding his "revolution" rather than use the money toward the purchase of a third house?

After all how many houses does a socialist Senator from Vermont need anyhow?

Anon at 2:35 pm. I think you've about doubled the Clinton's net worth. But, little matter, either figure is a lot of money. There are a lot of people who have a lot of money. Of course there are many more of us who don't and never will. I don't begrudge the Clintons or Bernie Sanders for their financial status. They've worked as public servants and made money by public speaking (for good causes) and by writing well-received books.

Michael Moore has a game plan for defeating Trump. #3 is ESSENTIAL.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-moore/5-ways-to-make-sure-trump-loses_b_11407538.html

Keep in mind, this is not a popularity contest and polls don't mean shit. This is about electoral votes. EVERY vote is needed.

So I suggest you embrace Bill Maher's strategy and if you really want Hillary to win, read through Michael Moore's five step plan, paying close attention to #3.

Give up your "pot" for the duration, please.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Anonymous2:25 PM

    No accusation needed.

Ways to defeat Trump according to Michael Moore:

    1. You are responsible for getting 50 people to the polls November 8.

    2. From today until November 8, you are in the French Resistance.

    3. You must be supportive of the depressed voter.

"Get this straight: HALF of America is planning NOT to vote November 8. Hillary’s approval rating is at 36 percent. CNN said it last night: No one running for office with an approval rating of 36 percent has ever been elected president (Trump’s is at 30 percent). Even in these newer polls, 60 percent still say that Hillary is “untrustworthy to be president.” Disillusioned young people stop me every day to tell me they’re not voting (or they’re voting Third Party). This is a problem, folks. Stop ignoring it. You need to listen to them. Chastising them, shaming them, will not work. Acknowledging to them that they have a point, that Hillary Clinton is maybe not the best candidate, and then promising them that you will join them on November 9 in a political revolution that will demand Clinton enact her platform, that might go a long way to getting them to vote. They don’t have to change their opinion about Hillary. They just have to reluctantly vote for her and be allowed to feel very bad about doing it — and very good that we will fight on their side after the election."

    4. Hillary must slyly stick Trump with a comedy shiv during the debates.

    5. I hereby appoint you precinct captain in your neighborhood, in your school, and at your place of work.

Explain to me in small, simple words I can understand in what way this post either defeats Trump or gets Hillary elected?

If you can't, how about saving it until after November?

I believe the short answer to that is that like many of Jane and Bernie's other assets, the vacation home is in Jane's name, not his, and somehow doesn't get counted into "his" net worth. Don't know if that is legally done or not. Jane pulled in over a million dollars in salary during her Burlington College years, while they could have lived on Bernie's salary. If the couple DIDN'T manage to have a million dollars in assets after that, something would have been wrong. But that would have made Bernie one of those dreadful millionaires, and that wouldn't look good.

This post of Gryphen's does nothing in that regard and in fact damages Hillary's chances of winning by further inciting and alienating the very voters the Democrats are trying to woo.

By the way if Sanders and his wife sold a house she inherited, that had been in her family for 100 years, why did he give her any say over how to spend the proceeds?

You can't plead ignorance this time. You already admitted you read the Snopes post.

Many people are saying you're not the feminist you claim to be. /snark

    Gryphen,
You said your house cost over 300k. How can you afford that on your salary? You don't have a college degree. Did you use funds from donations you got here? Or will you be a coward and delete my post?

I don't think he paid that much for it but according to muni tax records it is worth 370,000 now, for the structure and land. If he purchased the home 15-20 years ago most likely it's paid for.

You are out of line. You don't know what Gryphen's salary is. And he would never be so uncouth as to say what he makes. But the point is, Gryphen has ALWAYS had a full time job. The teaching assistant job which Palin loves to claim she got Gryphen fired from- was a part time job in ADDITION TO his full time job. He withdrew as a teaching assistant only because he was delegated more responsibilities in his full time job and had no more time to volunteer.

But if Gryphen DID make $300,000 from this blog, I'd be fucking THRILLED for him. I'm sure $300 a month is a more accurate assessment of what Gryphen makes from this blog.

Gryphen, you've tipped your hand too far, my friend. When you add even the most trivial nugget of infirmation to a Bristol Palin post, you edit the title with "UPDATE!"

But here there is a legitimate update, and you didn't do that. You really do seem to hate Bernie. I'm voting for Hilary and I'm certainly not a "fan" of Bernie...but you are starting to sound like you'd be at home posting on Sarah's Facebook- that's how bitter you come off these days.

You've been my favorite blogger for eons and I hope this is just a passing phase. But it seems to be getting more pronounced, not the other way around.

Still, if you're gonna start a donation site, using your prestige as a politician or anyone for that matter, use it for what you said you would. Like Sarah. It was never clear what she was doing with hers. It's like those mega churches. Dumbassed people donate their last ten dollars so those so called God people could fly in jets, get face surgery, and all that other bullshit they preach against. So if Bernie is going to start his pac be nice if he used it for what he said he would. Of coarse money corrupts, even the most well intended. I've seen it all my life. Look at the movie stars. They go apeshit and never return. Remember Reese Witherspoon spewing "do you know who I am?" to a cop who stopped she her her husband some time back.

I have to agree with you, 7:47. However, Reese did apologize later on for her poor behavior. She didnt deny it happened or that she was drunk at the time, or downplay it like Scary did about the Thrilla from Wasilla..."Do you know who I am" morphed into..."Do you know who he(Tracky) is? He's a vet!".
No More Bernie Donations! He's doing fine!

The incredible immaturity and hatred (yes, hatred) aimed at Gryphen sounds much more like Trump supporters amid a sea of ignorance. If you assholes don't like the blog then stay the hell away.

IF YOU all were educated about BS' life story, let alone worthless Jane's, then you have to subscribe to promoting rampant teen-age girls' sex with whomever is around, so they don't get breast cancer when they are adults, ala BS' essays.

Then you have to agree with him that when you have sex with your male partner you are fantasizing being raped by three men at the same time.

You would also know he lived off other people and got his first paycheck at age 41 when he became an elected official. Produced a son with the girlfriend between wife one and two and had no job until the boy was a teenager. Parent? Hardly.

Gryphen has more integrity and better history than BS could ever have.

BS out there helping Hillary? No, collecting the donations he is getting using the democratic internet fundraiser - but for his fucking revolution, not for the down ballot dems. BS says he is headed back to his senate seat to serve as an Independent.

You ignorant complainers need to get your head out of your asses and try to learn when you are being had by such idiots as BS. Or you can do what another of his published essays (for which he got paid) tells you to do, masturbate and fantasize being raped. 1972

I put sites on here for months as sources for all BS' crap but no point in it because if you disgusting complainers read it, it did no good and if you didn't bother there is no reason for me to search it out now. Sheesh! Disrespect of the caliber you all are showing toward Gryphen is not becoming and makes it look like you caught the Drumpf infection. Go get well and stay away until you do!

1975 Arkansas, 12 year old girl raped by 41 year old, who was defended by H Rodham. Hills laughed at the rape victim and slut shamed her, proof in black and white from court papers available online and audio on Youtube. Google it if you dare. Hillary knew this man was guilty of rape, 30+years prison, but plea bargained it down to 8 mo's in the county clink.
      How's that for female empowerment?

The idea that HRC laughed at a rape victim has already been debunked, Google it if you dare! HRC didn't set the sentence, the court did because the girl's story didn't hold up. She also tried to get out of defending him but as an attorney, you have to legally give your client the best possible defense, even if you detest what they have done. You''re just hopelessly biased if you read everything negative about HRC and believe it all but don't believe a word said about Bernie and Jane.

      Careful what you demand, AKRNHSNC.
I DID google it. You are not entirely correct. I had NO IDEA any of this happened.
Yes, often a lawyer starting out cannot pick and choose clientele. That's not the main ass chapper here.
She knew the bastard was guilty. She knew he could face 30 years in prison for physically and emotionally tearing that little girl up during a brutal beating and rape. She laughed about the crime lab mishandling crucial forensic evidence(bloody semen panties) in an interview with Reed.Plus, there were witnesses to the crime who knew a beating/rape occurred, rather than a "fondling" .
"Fondling", my aunt fanny. HE RAPED A CHILD AND YOUR GAL HELPED HIM GET A LIGHT SENTENCE. She allowed a rapist to essentially walk, to do it again.
Sorry, but I don't think rape is anything to laugh about, especially childrape. What if that was your daughter?
And what do the sanders have to do with letting this rapist get an 8 month county jail sentence? They weren't his lawyers who knew he was guilty and deserved the full 30 years in federal prison.
You didn't address the slut-shaming evident in the affidavit.

Were you scared in a dream by an old Jew with white hair? WHAT is the butt hurt for Bernie Sanders about? I have avoided bringing up your girl's new problem with favors for cash re foreign bad guys and the Clinton Foundation, but can we talk? This woman is a never ending story of lies and excuses and denial. The DNC backed a flawed candidate, when ALL the polls showed that Bernie would beat the hell out of TRump, with no thrilling surprises from his past coming out to mess things up. She can't, to this very day, stand to tell the truth about what the FBI found, and what the director said while we all listened. Her version of what he said is like a TRumpet's tale of what the Don really said. BS. And I don't know about you, but I'm more jumpy every day with all the vile Republicans being welcomed into the campaign. Kissinger?? Negroponte?? Really? Kissinger should be on trial for war crimes!! His meddling in Chile is unforgivable and exhaustively documented. The Chilean people elected Allende, but Nixon and Kissy couldn't handle a Communist leader being chosen by Chile. Enter Pinochet, Kissy's murderous dictator thug.
No, I don't think an endorsement from Henry Kissenger is anything to be proud of, it's something to RUN from but Hillary is proud to have Kissy stand with her. This man has a worse moral compass than Trump.

There were TWO emails, count 'em, TWO that indicated CF donors requested favors of the State Dept. One involved a meeting with an ambassador to Lebanon and the other was regarding a job. Neither of the letters amounted to anything coming to fruition. So much for the new scandal. The Clinton Foundation has an "A" rating from CharityWatch and they have said that CF was extremely transparent in opening their foundation books to them. They spend 89% of all donations on funding those in need around the world. That is very low overhead for any foundation.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous9:31 AM

We were assured, we were promised that the e-mail scandal would amount to nothing and that Clinton's baggage was nothing to worry about. Whereas Bernie wasn't vetted and would be destroyed if he were the candidate. So Hillary was the safe choice as she was sure to win no problem.

Now there are problems and more problems.

There has been nothing but Clinton dirt being exposed week after week. The e-mails haven't gone away and have only gotten worse.

I don't know if the DNC simply wanted to make history again with the first woman president or they just felt Clinton should be rewarded and it was "her turn".

I'm personally pissed they just won't admit she is an extremely flawed candidate and I resent being forced to work so hard to get her elected when I was assured that wouldn't happen if she was chosen over Bernie.

I really hated the assumption that the Bernie voters would simply fall in line and vote for Hillary (so it was OK to continue to insult them for kicks) but Hillary's supporters would not vote for Bernie, not even to defeat Trump.

The continued bile vomited at Bernie also fails all logic. It's like he's hated because he dared to challenge her for the nomination, but without him she would have run unopposed and that would have been even worse. Is he hated because he did so well? Imagine how he would have done had all of those independent and unaffiliated voters would have been allowed to vote in the primaries. This crap about him not being a Democrat is just that. He's always been an Independent and if that were an issue the DNC could simply have told him he couldn't run on the Dem ticket. But they didn't. Because they knew Clinton needed an opponent and he provided them with one. They just didn't expect him to do as well as he did, then have the power to move policy back to the left. They also hate that Bernie was listening to and motivating a large portion of the party that wanted the party to move left and supported those policies the leadership scoffed at. Bernie held Clinton's feet to the fire and made her address issues she didn't really want to and now will be held accountable to follow through on.

I'm sick of the attacks. The convention is over. Hillary won.

I have never witnessed such a pack of whiny sore winners. I'm not sure what more they want.

If they think they can ridicule Bernie's supporters into saying "Uncle" and admitting they were stupid and Bernie is a crook, that's not going to happen so not sure what the point is. But it is poisoning this blog beyond redemption. It's ruined now. It will never be the nice place it used to be.

Instead of coming together to oppose Trump like we opposed Palin, the Hillary and Bernie people are still picking at each other.

Just as things are starting to heal, good ol' Gryphen can be counted on to pick that scab and start the bleeding again.

      Maybe he's anti-semitic. I don't know. You tell me.

Gryphen, you do yourself and this blog a disservice with this attitude of yours toward Bernie Sanders. He has spent a lifetime working for the same causes and in service to his constituents. He is a rare breed of politician with integrity. I am a Hillary Clinton supporter. But that does not mean I can't recognize what Bernie has done to move the conversation to the Left this election and to inspire many to vote and get involved. All of which will help get the government I want and I dare say you want.

So Hilary's dnc slogan "Stronger Together" is being interpreted by her followers as we uneducated others should drop our concern that the status quo Democrats have leaned too far right and too pro-corporate and get in lock step at the end of the line. I don't think it plays well that a man who's supposed to be 'for the people' bought yet another house, much less one that costs over half a mill, and this one isn't even a primary residence. Why not buy a time-share if you love lakefront vacations. I'll never see $600thou in my lifetime. He gets no more money from me, and no more support. The Bern is Ovah.
To be fair, my wedding didn't cost over $1 thousand. The Clintons reportedly spent almost $3 mill for chelsea's wedding.
