While "attempting to make his weapon safe" father shoots and kills two year old daughter and wounds her four year old sister.

Courtesy of Time:

A South Carolina father accidentally fired his gun Thursday evening while trying to make it “safe,” killing his 2-year-old daughter and injuring his 4-year-old daughter.

While “attempting to make the weapon safe,” the 30-year-old father accidentally fired the gun, striking his hand and both his daughters in the upper body, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Two-year-old Heaven Miller died from the gunshot wound, the Sheriff said. Both the father and his four-year-old daughter suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The father was cleaning his gun on the family’s porch when it went off after he sat on it, the State newspaper reported. The Sheriff’s department is investigating the shooting as accidental.

Attempting to modify an instrument of death in the same room as your children does not seem like it should fall in the category of "accidental."

"Negligent homicide" or "manslaughter" maybe.

When will these idiots learn that the only way to make a gun "safe" is to leave it at the store where they bought it?

Once that weapon is in your home the chances for an accidental shooting increase 100%.

"was cleaning his gun on the family’s porch when it went off after he sat on it" ??????

How the hell was he trying to clean it???

Why do so many 2nd Amendment enthusiasts feel the need to clean their guns with small children in the room? I'm sure he told anyone who would listen that he had guns to 'keep his family safe'. Didn't work out too well for those poor babies, now did it?

Just an excuse to get rid of his responsibilities( his children). Just like all the deaths of leaving babies in cars, the parents get away with murder, literally.

why do you fuel your car with kids in it, gun safety starts with education. if they do not learn how to safely handle or be around firearms then how will they know. you people are ignorant. guns do not kill people use them as an instrument to kill just like a knife or a bow and arrow. the writer of this column must be one of those 60 hippys tht believe that love and sex is the only way in life with a hit off a joint.

Not a room-his PORCH. He could have 'accidentally' shot a neighbor out waking their dog--would that be 'accidental' too? None of these shootings are accidents. Guns kill. Maim. Go off, it seems, of their own free will. If all shootings are accidental, then I guess the NRA is wrong: GUNS DO KILL PEOPLE.

No, irresponsible people or murderers kill people. I believe these "accidental shootings" are as much of an "accident" as people leaving babies in hot cars.

All these claims of guns going off while cleaning them are pure bullshit. You cannot clean a loaded gun, and you sure as hell can't clean one while you're sitting on it. It's obvious from their stories that they consider gun cleaning to mean stupidly fucking around with a gun. I'm with you, Gryph, charge his ass with negligent homicide. That level of irresponsible endangerment is not a 2nd Amend right.

Thursday night, my step-son, a gunsmith, was shot while working at a gun store. The owner was killed and his car and many guns stolen. My step-son was hit in the chest, barely missing his heart and aorta and the bullet went whinging around inside his body, nicking his lung, liver, and stomach. He had surgery Friday and is, thank God, stable. NOW! both these men were armed when the robbers invaded the small GUN shop, but it didn't do them a heck of a lot of good to be armed, did it!

If there were no bullets in it, there would have been no "accident" and his babies would still be there and fine. And, he wouldn't be haunted by his own stupidity for the rest of his life. And, because the gun was loaded, Why in the H is it not going to be investigated as a crime? There needs to be a penalty for the stupid people who leave guns loaded when cleaning them, and let their kids in the room where they are practicing "their stupid".

If the weapon wasn't pointed at his children, loaded or not, it wouldn't have shot them.

It has not yet been determined if this man will be charged. However, often times prosecutors decline to charge in shooting deaths, stating that the shootings and killings were "just" accidents. So, if people are driving their cars and hit and kill pedestrians, why are the drivers most times charged even though these were accidents? Let's see, what could be the reason. Oh, yea, the fucking NRA and gutless prosecutors and politicians.

If you really want to make your gun safe, hack off both hands and feet and ask someone to pull your tongue out with vise grips superglued to the bumper of a Semi. Feeling any safer with one kid dead and the other injured? You're doing it wrong. Vasectomy first, gun second, got it? BTW this wasn't an accident, we need a new word but accident doesn't cover it. RIP kiddo.

Since when do you clean or modify a LOADED gun?

Adding to the tragedy, the 4 year old is just old enough to remember this for the rest of her life.

Sad story. Will people learn? I doubt it. It'll happen again and again. And one of the commenters is right. It's highly suspicious about people who let their children sit in hot cars and die, and get away with it. Now these gun stories are also suspect.
