Kate McKinnon singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" may the best SNL cold open ever, and just what this country needed.

I did not know what to expect from SNL last night, but I remembered worrying that I would not be able to laugh at Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump impersonation.

As it turned out I did not have to worry about that, because instead we were gifted with this beautiful song sung by perhaps the most gifted entertainer that SNL has today.

It was haunting, it was beautiful, and it was perhaps just what all of us needed after last Tuesday's terrifying outcome.

  1. Anonymous6:25 AM

    Love that song!

  2. Anonymous6:53 AM

  3. Damn, you are one big drama queen.

  4. Anonymous7:02 AM

And what a amazing way to honor Leonard Cohen by using his song to recognize and mourn his death while also uplifting us after our earlier devastating loss on Election Day.....

    1. Anonymous7:42 AM

      I agree wholeheartedly.

I teared up when Kate McKinnon's voice thickened and she was visibly trying to keep control.

As Sarah Silverman would say, "You're being ridiculous."

    2. A fucking petition isn't going to do anything. Neither is e-mail.

Bombarding the electors with actual paper letters *might* persuade a few. If the addresses could be had. It won't change anything.

But Trump losing the popular vote and then losing a chunk of electors would send a clear message. He does NOT have a mandate. He is not "popular". People in fact hate him. A majority of the population. Even his own party.

They guy loves to be loved. He wants adoration.

That is the one thing we cannot give him.

And NO COMPROMISING. It gains us nothing, weakens our position and the one thing you cannot do is give this man any indication that you might "make a deal."

I hope Chuck Schumer has the balls to stay firm and keep saying NO!

    3. Anonymous11:30 AM

      mlaiuppa -

According to his aides, Trump wants to continue holding the large rallies that he reveled in during the campaign. "He likes the instant gratification and adulation that the cheering crowds provide, and his aides are discussing how they might accommodate his demand."

Those words - "instant gratification and adulation" - say it all. He has no interest in fulfilling the real responsibilities of the Presidency. He only wants the fame and attention the office provides. It is the highest and most public position on the country, perhaps the world, and it was the ultimate prize for his bloated ego.

He won't even commit to living full time in the White House because he prefers his gaudy penthouse/museum to himself in Trump Tower.

      How did this happen???

    4. 11:30

And what happens when his rallies get smaller and the adulation is no longer there? Where is he going to get his instant gratification when he's attacked on TV, Twitter, newpapers, and finally wherever he makes an appearance. Even if they keep all of the protesters out of his venue, he is still going to see some. If not on the way to and from wherever, then on TV after the fact.

Trump is going to know how hated he is. The instant gratification won't last very long That's the problem with a narcissist. They keep needing that fix. He's peaked. From here on out it's all downhill. He'll never feel that high again.

  9. Many thanks to SNL and Kate....the song was powerfully but tenderly sung - I don't know how she got through it, but it was very beautiful and will go down as one of the greatest moments after this heartbreaking week. It soothed my soul.

  11. Anonymous7:30 AM

That was very touching. Maybe the election result has a silver lining that we empower ourselves individually to take a stand for justice, decency, humane treatment, true American ideals when witnessing deplorable behaviors.

It is affirming to see protesters taking a stand who are nonviolent. I feel relief the media is emphasizing and broadcasting why so many object to President elect Trump. I hope the world also sees not all Americans condone the worst in people that candidate Trump encouraged and demonstrated including ignorance.

  12. Anonymous7:30 AM

If Mr. Trump has any intention of actually being the president for all Americans, he has to get out there and condemn all the hate crimes being committed. HE and He alone can do that to help because he is responsible for them. Grow up, Trump, be the leader we all need. (not counting on it, however)

    1. Anonymous7:45 AM

I'm not counting on it either. And I don't like to read or hear pundit going on about how Obama will have no legacy. When all of this ends, and I don't know when that will be - four years, eight years - President Obama's legacy will shine through as the brightest and most hopeful years of the 21st century.

    2. Anonymous8:11 AM

Grow up Trump? A seventy year old man child grow up? I don't see that happening.

    3. Anonymous9:20 AM

      He and he alone?
How about those who choose to go high when the others go low?
Haven't heard anything from that camp...hypocrites.

    4. Anonymous10:07 AM

The time to start was when someone yelled "kill Obama" during his victory speech. Yet he remained silent......

    5. Not gonna happen.

      He's had 70 years.

Have you not been paying attention?

      Rule #1:

  13. Anonymous7:40 AM

President Barack Obama, we the people of this country owe you a debt of gratitude for your gentle strength in reaching out to those suffering incalculable loss in the aftermath of tragedies from coast to coast. We give our deep appreciation for your honest and hope-filled addresses that brought comfort and inspiration to continue to work for change. We will miss you and never forget the lives you have touched with compassion and love.

  14. Anonymous7:41 AM

The not my president movement is very real as a new Washington Post/ABC News poll found that more than half of non-whites who supported Hillary Clinton do not accept Donald Trump as the legitimate President Of The United States.

Jake Tapper Drops A Reality Bomb On Paul Ryan: Millions Are Terrified Of Trump’s Presidency

    1. No shit.

Only "millions"? She's got 61 million votes. Those that voted for neither of them are going to be afraid of him. Even some of the Trump voters are going to be afraid of him.

When the dust settles you're going to have 60% or more of this country terrified of a Trump presidency. There's the Republicans' fucking mandate.

  16. Anonymous7:45 AM

    1. WHERE are they getting these numbers? Because I can't find them anywhere. And TWITTER is not a reliable news source.

These are the only numbers I can find:

It gives her a 680,877 lead.

You can't give her all of the third party vote. The only thing you can do is add that vote to the "not for Trump" totals to prove the guy only managed to get about 47% of the nation's vote. Certainly NOT a mandate

    2. Anonymous3:31 PM

I read that the greater numbers of votes for Hillary are because states are just now counting absentee votes and overseas military votes and adding them to her total.

Paul Ryan Isn’t Standing Behind Some Of Donald Trump’s Biggest Campaign Promises

    1. Yeah, but who are the representatives going to follow? Ryan or Trump? Trump the bully. Trump the vindictive. Those pissy pants little cowards aren't going to risk their re-elections bids in two years. With the Deplorables screaming for Trump to make good on his promises all he has to do is make one visit to their district and tell them their guy isn't supporting him, isn't towing the line or is a RINO and should be fired.

That's how authoritarians work. And that's what Trump is. Paul Ryan, if he even keeps his job, is now obsolete. He's a paper leader. He'll be told to get the job done or in two years *he'll* be out of the job. And Trump will see to it that no one hires him.

  18. Anonymous7:54 AM

He's not going to do it, 7:30 AM! He's nothing more than a racist pig and should never be allowed to take the oath to become potus.

I will never support this fraud! He's angry, hateful, evil, nasty, shallow, a liar, not bright, is not qualified (in ANY was to be potus) and is a first-class prick with, I suspect, a tiny head between his fat thighs!

Check his past, America. It's all out there to read (varied sources) and verifiable.

We are going to be so damned sorry Hillary Clinton (with the massive popular vote) isn't going to be our President!

Be prepared America to protect yourselves!!!

    1. Anonymous3:29 PM

I agree with you in all you say. I am so sick to my stomach over this. I worked very hard for Mrs. Clinton to be elected Potus. And I donated money until it hurt. I will never accept this and I will never call this fraud Mr. President. I hope that he fails miserably. It does not mean that I don't love America. I am a very proud American and I love this country, but that jerk will never have my respect and he will never be president in my eyes!

Paul Ryan: Access to birth control for women is ‘nitty-gritty detail’ not worth talking about

  20. Anonymous8:03 AM

More Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump! That’s right, Clinton won the popular vote, but the electoral college system will silence the people’s voice. But there’s an incredible Hail Mary plan that could still stop Trump -- if we act really fast!

The Popular Vote Plan is genius. It’s legislation that would guarantee the candidate who receives the most popular votes is elected, and it only needs the support of enough states to equal 270 electoral votes to pass. 10 states are on board, and 4 have pending legislation, so it’s already 3/4 of the way there!

  21. Frosty no longer AK8:08 AM

I was unable to cry after Tuesday. That was beautiful, inspired, and I cried like a baby...

    1. Anonymous10:10 AM

Me too. Sad and bitter tears.

    2. Anonymous11:29 AM

This is my first time visting IM (or any other site or TV or radio station that might mention Trump) since the atrocity occurred, and I cried, too. Maybe it's time for me to come out and see what's happening -- I've been hiding since a week before the election.

  25. KanaW8:31 AM

Yep, and my right-wing relative in TX is posting about how horrible it is that SNL stole that song and used it for political purposes. Sigh.

    1. Been living in a cave in Texas for how many decades?

  26. Anonymous8:33 AM

This is from the Huffington Post:

In a Sunday appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Ellison diagnosed the party’s recent electoral troubles.

“You’ve got to have a vision to strengthen the grass-roots,” Ellison said. “Make the voters first, not the donors first. I love the donors and we thank them, but it has to be that the guys in the barbershop, the lady at the diner, the folks who are worried about their plant is going to close ― they’ve got to be our focus.”

This is the opinion of the person who will be the next Chair of the DNC. It wasn't just a loss for Hillary Clinton, it was a loss for the Democratic Party. The voters are desperately looking for someone to represent THEM, and they are done with establishment politics.

Now if you want to comment about how Hillary won the popular vote, I say, who's the President-elect? If you want to cry about the electoral college, well maybe you're right. But the rules were the same for both candidates.

  27. Anonymous8:53 AM

I was also glad to see the show be allowed to go uncensored except for the f-word. It was raw and honest, angry and healing. Glad to see Lorne and NBC step up.

  28. Anonymous9:55 AM

Yep, I finally shed a tear after that one. I think I have just been in shock all week. I just hope that Trump's health holds up because that Pence guys is even more of a fanatic, if possible.

I blame Sarah Palin for making it ok to voice your bigotry. It all started in 2008. All those scared old white people who were afraid of Obama becoming President just started wearing their beliefs openly. This made way for Trump and all his misogynist/racist actions.

    1. The last thing we need is for Trump to die and Pence step up and vow he'll carry on every single one of Trump's promises.

Let Donald go out as a disgrace.

Considering Putin's latest, I'm now leaning toward a national security impeachment.

    2. Anonymous1:04 PM

Nope. Sarah did not create it, she just opened the bunker door to the deplorable silent type. Until now. What you see are those that society had under control with rules, laws and regulations. They are now empowered to be racist and bullies again.

A SEA OF 'RED HATS' is coming:
Do You Know Someone Suffering From Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder (TARD)? Know the Signs, Spot the Symptoms, Save a Life

Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder is a pattern of pathologically dissociative and psychotic behavior, first observed in the late hours of November 8th 2016, and increasing in severity with passing time. Sufferers of Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder often exhibit pronounced cognitive dissonance, sudden bouts of rage, uncontrollable crying, suicidal ideation, and extreme butthurt.

    Signs and Symptoms:

People with Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder are characterized by a persistent unwillingness to accept that Donald Trump is going to Make America Great Again. Individual sufferers often display signs of paranoia and delusion; in acute cases psychotic episodes have been observed. Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder is different from being upset about the results of the 2016 presidential election; People with TARD are unwilling or unable to accept reality, despite irrefutable evidence.

According to the DSM-V, individuals with TARD exhibit most or all of the following symptoms:

Telling others they are moving to Canada
Fixated on fantasies about the Electoral College
Protesting an election no credible source contests the outcome of
Exclamations that “Someone” should do “Something”
    Sudden weight gain
Acute change in demeanor from pompous and arrogant to fearful and combative
Claim that anyone who disagrees with them is some combination of Racist, Sexist, Bigoted, Homophobic, and Actually Hitler

    Causes and Mechanisms:

Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder was directly caused by the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States of America. For many, both in America and worldwide, this was a shocking and unexpected outcome; their preferred news sources having failed to inform them that the alternative candidate was a criminal parasite in such ill health she got chucked into the back of a van like a kidnap victim.

Research is ongoing, but TARD appears to correlate closely with the following environmental and behavioral factors:

    Membership in the Democratic party
    Identifying as a Feminist
    Currently enrolled in college, and/or
Possession of a Liberal Arts college degree
Living in a densely populated metropolitan area
    Massive student debt
    Spotty or non-existent work history

Diagnosis of Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder is straightforward. Ask the patient if Donald Trump is going to be the Next President of the United States of America. Some patients will become agitated, and may attempt to deflect. It’s critical you press them on the issue, even if they start babbling about ‘muh triggers’. A sufferer of TARD will begin to ramble incoherently, often displaying three or more of the symptoms within a short period of time.

    Co- morbidity:

A diagnosis of Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder is highly comorbid with Paraphilic Infantilism, Emotional Eating, Autism Spectrum, Bush Derangement Syndrome, and adult bed wetting.

The only known effective treatment is exposure therapy. The patient must be repeatedly exposed to reality, and should wear a Make America Great Again hat as long as they are able to tolerate it. Each exposure should increase in length, after a week the patient should be encouraged to be seen in public wearing the MAGA hat. Coach the patient to refer to Donald Trump as President-Elect Trump.

Patients with TARD are very resistant to treatment, and dangerous in large groups. Any possibility of treatment requires that they be separated from their hive-mind support apparatus; they cannot begin the process of accepting reality in the presence of encouragement towards delusion and irrationality. Separation may require the assistance of law enforcement.
If you have a friend or loved one suffering from TARD, urge them to seek treatment. Together we can beat this scourge, and Make America Great Again!"

So don tells 60 minutes that he intends to deport 2.5 million illegal humans from usa immediately. Does that mean the closing of all of his usa resorts and the employees along with the Russian marina campaign operatives, will they be sent home too?

    1. Anonymous12:57 PM

Don't you remember who else said criminal illegal aliens should be deported without due process? Why it was Hillary Clinton in 2008. Here's what she said:
"Anybody who committed a crime in this country or in the country they came from has to be deported immediately, with no legal process. They are immediately gone."

      Same thing as Trump's saying.

    2. Anonymous3:45 PM

Was she presidient elect at the time?

    3. Anonymous5:59 PM

It was one of her campaign promises in 2008: criminal record - immediately gone, just like Trump's saying. You should do some research and refresh your memory on what other views she shares with Trump. You know, like Wall St can regulate itself. He's an asshole and she's not, but they do share quite a few policy positions.

Reminds me of the week that JFK was assasinated. The popular weekend show was TWTWTW (That was the week that was). What were they going to say? They offered a dance with white gloved hands. It was incredibly soothing.
