Thousands of people all over the country take to the streets to protest the election of Donald Trump.

Courtesy of CNN:

"Not my President," they chanted. "Not today."

In response to Trump's victory, a shocking win fueled by the rural roar of a dismayed white America, tens of thousands in at least 25 US cities -- including New York and Nashville, Chicago and Cleveland, San Francisco and Seattle -- shouted anti-Trump slogans, started fires, and held candlelight vigils to mourn the result.

Many of those demonstrations continued early Thursday morning and led to dozens of arrests.

"People are furious, not just at the results of the election, but the rhetoric of Donald Trump," Ahmed Kanna, an organizer for Social Alternative Berkeley, told CNN's Don Lemon.

In New York, authorities estimated that as many as 5,000 people protested the real estate mogul's victory outside Trump Tower. They included pop star Lady Gaga, a staunch Clinton supporter.

Their concerns ranged from policies, such as his proposed plan to build a wall along the US-Mexican border, to the polarizing tenor of his campaign that stoked xenophobic fears.

My first thought when seeing this last night was "I certainly hope all of those people voted."

Because these days it seems much easier to get people to show up for a rally or a protest, than it is to get them to turn up at a polling place.

If they did, then good for them in taking their disgust in our electoral process to the streets.

And I agree with them.

Donald Trump won the electoral vote, but he lost the popular vote by hundreds of thousands of votes (Update: Sorry, I am now learning that the number is a million or more).

We did not choose him to be our president, the system did.

And it was not alone.

Wikileaks, Vladimir Putin, and our own FBI, chose him to be our president.

And I don't know about you, but they DON'T get to make that choice for me.

So count as me as firmly with the #Notmypresident crowd.

Because he's not, and he never will be.

Hillary: "We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought. But I still believe in America and I always will. And if you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future. Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead."

    and

"Mr. Obama reminded the country that we “are all on the same team” and characterized politics as an “intramural scrimmage.” He said that he was heartened by the conversation that he had with Mr. Trump at 3:30 a.m. and that he hoped Mr. Trump maintains that spirit."

Iam so afraid that you are right. I keep trying to tel myself that maybe all his hateful rhetoric during the campaign is not as bad as it seems. But his History belies the fact. Starting in 1973 when he was discriminting against Housing for African Americans and sued by the DOJ. I shudder for this country.

Why should our Democratic leaders, including Clinton & Obama, try to "heal" and "unite" the country for the unqualified Trump and his re-tread "advisors." Republicans don't do that: they do everything they can to obstruct and champion their own causes.

8:45 AM - Why should they?

      - Because it is the right (and classy) thing to do.
      - Because they actually care about the country, not just being in charge.
      - Because our actions reflect who we are. And Clinton & Obama are good folks.

We are going to miss them. And who would want our last days with them to be watching them throwing some kind of hissy fit because they don't want to let the new kids on the slide at the playground. Nope, they are grown ups. They are a class act and I would expect no less than a dignified effort at cooperation.

    RUSSIANS OR TRUMPS GETS THE
LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE AWARD

Son of a bee's wax. Already the Russians are lying. They claim they've been in contact with the Trump campaign prior to the election and the Trump campaign said, UH-UH (no you didn't) and those lying Russians said UH-HUH (yes we did)

I'm puzzled after the link below, I pasted a portion of a post that Donald Trump said he has no businesses with Russia, but it keeps popping up his son says he does?

So either Donald Sr is a liar or an incompetent business man who doesn't know what his company is doing or his Donald Jr is either incompetent or a liar.

    Washington Post
Moscow had contacts with Trump team during campaign, Russian diplomat says

MOSCOW — Russian government officials had contacts with members of Donald Trump’s campaign team, a senior Russian diplomat said Thursday, in a disclosure that could reopen scrutiny over the Kremlin’s role in the president-elect’s bitter race against Hillary Clinton.

Facing questions about his ties to Moscow because of statements interpreted as lauding Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump repeatedly denied having any contact with the Russian government.

After the latest statement by the Russian diplomat, the spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, Hope Hicks, denied there were interactions between Russia and the Trump team before Tuesday’s election.

“The campaign had no contact with Russian officials,” she said in an email.

But Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, in an interview with the state-run Interfax news agency, said that “there were contacts” with the Trump team.

“Obviously, we know most of the people from his entourage,” Rybakov said. “Those people have always been in the limelight in the United States and have occupied high-ranking positions. I cannot say that all of them but quite a few have been staying in touch with Russian representatives...

.... But he made millions of dollars by bringing the Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013. Wealthy Russians also have been an important source of investments into Trump’s businesses. His son, Donald Trump Jr., in 2008 said that “Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets,” adding that “we see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.”...

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/moscow-had-contacts-with-trump-team-during-campaign-russian-diplomat-says/2016/11/10/28fb82fa-a73d-11e6-9bd6-184ab22d218e_story.html

Trump doesn't do business in Russia. Or does he?

One reason to wonder about Trump's loyalty to Russia is his possible business interests there. In the second debate, he flatly declared: “I don't deal there. I have no businesses there.” But there's all kinds of evidence, including statements from his advisers and family members, that Trump has done business with Russia.

His son, Donald Trump Jr., said in 2008 that “Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets.”

Alan Garten, general counsel of the Trump Organization, told our colleagues in May: “I have no doubt, as a company, I know we’ve looked at deals in Russia. And many of the former Russian republics.”

There is no scenario in which a Trump presidency is a success. There are no real plans for anything. There is no coherent Republican party outside of tax cuts for the wealthy. What are they going to do about immigration? No one knows. How are they going to “repeal and replace” Obamacare? No one knows. Do they want to make cuts in Social Security and Medicare? No one knows. The Trump recession is already on its way and Republicans will soon remember how a midterm with an unpopular president goes in 2018.

Trump supporters brutally attack gay man in California

Trump supporters shouted slurs at a gay man from Canada who was in a Santa Monica, CA bar Tuesday night watching Trump win the Presidential election, and upon leaving the bar, the man says, these supporters attacked him.

Calgary filmmaker Chris Ball said that he was watching the election results when supporters of the Republican candidate began to lob epithets. ‘We got a new president you fucking faggots,” they said, Ball told Metro Calgary.

When Ball left the bar alone later in the night, Trump supporters followed him to an alley way and assaulted him, Ball said. The last thing he remembers before awaking bloody on the pavement was having a beer bottle smashed over his head. Friends took him to the hospital.

You should be very scared for your retirement right now

Nearly every facet of the global economy is plummeting as Donald Trump closes in on the White House. Anyone with a retirement in the market should take notice.

Financial markets are showing that in addition to Dow Jones futures falling quickly as reported earlier tonight, the dollar is crashing along with the Nasdaq, the S&P 500, crude oil prices, and the Mexican peso. As Bloomberg noted, the implosion of financial markets is very similar to what happened in the wake of the earth-shattering Brexit vote earlier this year.

Speaking of voters, here is the crux of the problem:

    Kerry/Bush 59M/62M
    Obama/McCain 70M/60M
    Obama/Romney 65M/60M
    Clinton/Trump 60M/60M

Republicans have a very reliable coalition of about 60 million votes. As we have seen, they will vote for ANYONE on the Republican side.

If the 70 million who turned out for Obama in 2008 voted this year, Trump would have lost handily. Democrats consistently fail to hold together a reliable coalition, despite having more possible votes. So, what issues (or candidates) can Democrats put forward to RELIABLY encourage larger numbers of voters to turn out?

Looking at the last few elections, you would have to say the #1 issue is race. In hindsight, Clinton should have chosen an African-American or Hispanic VP. Also, forget trying to bring in "moderate" Republicans: they came home at the end, even to someone like Trump.

"A full 50 percent of Americans decided to vote for Trump AFTER James Comey’s announcement that he was looking into Clinton’s emails again. That final portion of the campaign showed that Comey’s message could have had an impact. Of the 13 percent of voters who decided in the final weeks after the announcement 47 percent went Trump and only 42 percent went for Clinton. In those very close states like Michigan and Wisconsin, it could have been a factor."

Americans are going to be very sorry that Hillary Clinton was blocked from taking the lead of our country. I think she lost because of the FBI and their leader whom I think should be fired!

Under Trump we are going to see our demise. Many people are going to lose their lives in the next four years either due to loss of medical insurance where they can't secure medical help and/or through the deaths of many minorities due to a Civil War that Trump and his ilk will start.

Plus, he will control the media so that it provides only good information about him and his Administration.

He will divide our country even more which has recently been shown us to be extremely racist.

God bless the fact we have had President Obama govern our country for the past eight years (nearly completed). He is a man that is loved and respected throughout our country and the world!

That same feeling does not permeate America and the world for Donald Trump! Factual: Watched the demonstrations throughout our country yesterday and heard the words (media and leaders of theirs) coming from countries across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from us!

God Bless America! We are going to need his help more so than ever before. You Christians that supported Trump in this election need to be praying for your souls. You are the most 'unChristian' folks we have in our midst!

Prepared yourselves for the dictatorship of Donald Trump - the man I'll never recognize as my president (and I use that term loosely where he his concerned!). He's never even earned the position - much less will be able to handle it and all the complexities of the role!

"Let me just tell you, Mr. Trump has a long memory and we're keeping a list," Manigault, the campaign's director of African-American outreach, told the Independent Journal Review, an online news outlet started by two former GOP staffers aimed at a center-right audience.
Manigault made the comment in response to Sen. Lindsey Graham's tweet that he supported conservative presidential candidate Evan McMullin.
Manigault, an ordained minister, responded by suggesting that the South Carolina Republican was an enemy and said "God bless him."....

And, who actually cast votes for this asshole that will never be my president?

Don't forget that he has also stated he wants to bring down the media - he's on record for having said that. He wants ONLY positive things said about him which various TV channels have started doing today! None stop trying to make him look normal! Total bunch of bullshit!

America is in huge trouble and I'm glad I'm an older senior and will be gone from this country and won't see all the destruction Trump and his ilk (Republicans) will bring to us.

Thank you, President Obama and VP Biden, for making my last years peaceful. Love you both!

These protestors are probably the same people who protested by either not voting or casting a "protest" vote for someone who had no chance of winning. And now they are taking their protests to the streets. Many of them were also the "Bernie or Bust" crowd.

I have MSNBC on right now and they are going 'non stop' with applauding Donald Trump and making him seem like a great guy - a nice guy - he's not bombastic - I'm sick to my stomach!

Did he pay these TV channels to talk like this? Who gave them the word to change their tune? Makes me fucking suspicious!

We cannot trust our media - first they built Trump up - then they took him down - then he got elected and now it's all what a wonderful president he will be.

    Fucking bullshit!

    Questions--I hope someone will reply.

I had to miss what took place between Obama and Trump. I had to go out while the cameras were still on the outside of the WH. I also heard that idiot had kept the press at bay.

Did Pres Obama or he and Michelle come outside as the Trumps walked up to the door? Did they shake hands? All I've seen are pics/video of Obama and the idiot sitting down inside. Did everyone the actual greeting happen? Did Michelle have to shake the hand of a serial abuser?

If they didn't show this, did they ever show MO and Melania at some point? Again, I've only seen pics of BO and the idiot inside sitting down.

If there were no other pics, then I take it that idiot entered the WH by some other door. Did we see the idiot go inside?

  43. And now the corruption, compromise and "rigging" is starting to emerge.

Yes, the Trump campaign was in contact with the Russian government. (Where were YOU, FBI?)

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-russia-in-touch-election_us_582475f5e4b0d9ce6fc0e5f4

"The Russian government was in touch with members of President-elect Donald Trump’s political team during the U.S. election campaign and knows most of his entourage, one of Russia’s most senior diplomats told the Interfax news agency on Thursday.

Accused by defeated Democratic contender Hillary Clinton of being a puppet of President Vladimir Putin after praising the Russian leader, Trump has dismissed suggestions he had anything to do with the Russian government during the campaign.

But in comments that could prove politically awkward for the president-elect, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there had indeed been some communications.

“There were contacts,” Interfax cited Ryabkov as saying. “We are doing this and have been doing this during the election campaign.”

Such contacts would continue, he added, saying the Russian government knew and had been in touch with many of Trump’s closest allies. He did not name names.

“Obviously, we know most of the people from his (Trump’s) entourage. Those people have always been in the limelight in the United States and have occupied high-ranking positions,” he said.

“I cannot say that all of them, but quite a few have been staying in touch with Russian representatives.”

Moscow was just beginning to consider how to go about setting up more formal channels to communicate with the future Trump administration, said Ryabkov.

A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment."

So YES! The low information, gun hoarding, bible thumping, redneck, assholes of this country did just elect Putin's Puppet.

But this may turn into WWIII as Putin manipulates Trump into teaming up against and taking over Europe. So my enjoyment will be short lived as the nuclear codes get deployed.

There was a press conference at the White House after President Obama met with Trump

Press Media: What are the president's thoughts? He said just on Monday that Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit to be Commander-In-Chief uniquely unqualified. Does he still believe that?

White House Press Secretary Josh Ernest: Look, the president's views hasn't changed. He stands by what he said on the campaign trail.

    OUCH!

Good for the WH Press Secretary

The protesters need to go into the rural areas and protest there. They are being too emotional and very irrational; why are they protesting in the urban areas where Clinton won? It's like protesting to the mirror. Go to the rural areas and protest where Trump won.

  48. We need to get rid of the electoral college. Twice now it has derailed our democracy: Gore and now Hillary Clinton, both of whom won the majority of the popular vote. Gerrymandering must stop too. It also subverts true democratic representation.

We will have a chance again in 2020 to turn the Congress blue and address things such as electoral college and gerrymandering.

Until then, hold on tight because it will get worse before it can get better.

The 2020 election will be the most important in our progressive lives. 2018 cannot make a difference but dammit, gird your loins and do the right thing in 4 years.

Why are you picking on Detroit? There are people from all over the nation who did not vote. AND where did you get that figure of 100,000 from? I don't believe it.

You sound like you want to blame Blacks for this disaster. Every time something goes wrong white people want to blame Black people.

It is WHITE folks who elected Trump, not Black folks. Black voters overwhelmingly rejected Trump.

@12:49, perhaps @12:15 is a resident of Detroit, which would make sense. I tend to be more aware of how my particular county votes and the statistics to go with it. If that isn't the case, shame on them.

It is obvious that 12:15 PM is NOT Black. NO Black would say some shit like that. No Black would have gone straight to a Black city to criticize for this electoral disaster that took place on Tuesday.
Blacks rejected Trump by almost 100%.

I remember when the state of California voted down same sex marriage years ago, and the first thing some whites did was blame Black voters of California, which is ridiculous being that Blacks make up only about 7% of the entire California electorate, not all of them voted.

Whites are the vast majority of the California population, followed by Hispanics. So it was whites who voted down the same sex marriage proposition. It is impossible for Blacks to have done that, since Blacks are such a tiny election block. But yet Blacks were blamed for it.

Really anyone who stayed home is responsible, no matter what the color or heritage.

It is unfortunate that whites will not suffer the outright humiliation of the trump regime.

Don't get me wrong, many poor whites that voted for him will suffer even more than they are now but they won't be deported and they won't be victim of constant "stop and frisk" and associated police and racist violence against minorities.

It was everyone's responsibility to get out the vote for the sanest candidate but unfortunately some will suffer more than others, that's just the way it works.

Godspeed to everyone that is now in the crosshairs of the trump regime. 4 years is a long time.

  53. After reading the comments and the pieces by Gryphen I have come to the conclusion that most people here do not get it. The Democratic party have no one to blame but themselves for this loss. If they had run a fair primary and allowed the voters to actually pick who they wanted on the top of the ticket the demo would have won with Bernie Sanders. Instead they cheated for Hillary who is clearly in the pocket of Wall Street. The emails came out and turned off a lot of voters from the party base. Also the states in the rust belt that turned for trump were all blue over the last two election cycles. These same states were hit the hardest by NAFTA. No one here as far as I am aware of seemed to notice that on trade and the economy Bernie spoke out against these disastrous trade deals like NAFTA and TPP,TTIP which Obama is trying to get passed in a lame duck session of Congress before he leaves office. Trump was speaking against these trade deals as well. Hillary was for these deals in the primary and even before the election saying they were the gold standard. The gold for the corporate fat cats who wrote these trade deals by the way. The rust belt noticed these things, what was said and by whom. What was done and not done and by whom and took action. The Democratic party is no different from the Republican party on policy.

  54. Not sure where you are getting your numbers but they are really inflated.

The latest I've found is Clinton leading by 337,636 votes with New Hampshire and Michigan still counting. In my city they are still counting absentee ballots. About half a million.

Her lead is gaining. Yesterday she was ahead by 207,000. Today it's over 300,000.

  55. I don't agree with ANY of the violence. Anger yes. Rage no. Civil disobedience yes. Breaking windows no. In this situation, it's not even appropriate to burn the flag.

Did those protesters vote? Did seek out and take at least one person with them who otherwise would not have voted? Did they volunteer at phone banks or go door to door? Or did they just stay in their facebook bubble and convince each other that Hillary had this in the bag?

The dem turnout was millions less than it could've been.

It's time to organize a coherent, nationwide peaceful opposition as a check against a quite possibly overreaching prez. with a GOP congress, senate and SCOTUS, and a useless media, a peaceful, organized and vigilant public is the last bulwark against fascism.

Not this tantrum-throwing on the streets.
