Germany considers fining Facebook for leaving up links to fake news stories.

Courtesy of Heat Street:

The government of Germany is considering imposing a legal regime that would allow fining social networks such as Facebook up to 500,000 euros ($522,000) for each day the platform leaves a “fake news” story up without deleting it.

In the name of combating harms from false news, the German government next year will consider the bill, which has bipartisan support, that will allow both official and private complainants to flag content that is considered “fake news”.

The law would also force the social networks to create in-country offices focused on responding to takedown demands and would make these networks responsible for compensation if a post by individual users were found to slander someone.

You know what I think that is a damn fine idea.

You would hope that most people would be smart enough to filter through the bullshit themselves, but what 2016 has clearly proven is that that is simply not the case.

So instead government are going to have step in and protect people from their own ignorance.

  1. Again, careful what you wish. The same laws can be used for censorship. The best intentions can lead to terrible consequences.
It's much easier to exploit ignorance than to cure, but the ultimate solution has to be to cure ignorance.

    1. i don't think there is a cure for ignorance anytime soon, so a certain level of pragmatism, is imho needed. angela is watching far right candidates win in many places in europe - her and our list of true allies grows thinner. and according to german friends of mine, many germans a very afraid of having a far right candidate win. fake news could throw their election, too - they have a healthy/truly unhealthy number of neo-nazis and skinheads. germany is a country still looking back at its past - not even 100 years past - and most say never again. they are ring for goose-stepping and nazi sig heiil'ing in public. i think their caution can be understood and forgiven, if not approved. freedom is never truly free - we always agree to not do certain things for the common good, whether we're conscious of it or not.

    4. Considering the impact of those Macedonian fake news producers and the manipulations coming from Putin, this is not a surprising development.

    1. Well you could check.

You know, at least attempt to overcome ignorance.

Go ahead, take out for a spin on Google. See how she handles.

Well no doubt Gryph, in the interest of overcoming ignorance, you were planning on publishing a redaction to this story you ran with:

      http://theimmoralminority.blogspot.com/2016/11/historic-church-in-mississippi-burned.html

Where you jumped to the conclusion that this fire at a black church was set by Trump supporter(s), your inflammatory headline reading 'welcome to Donald Trump's America'.

Even though the real story as it turns out was:

      http://www.cbsnews.com/news/andrew-mcclinton-arrested-in-burning-of-black-church-in-mississippi/

Fire started by one of their own congregation, a black guy.

It is important to get these stories corrected, especially when published for the purpose of angling for racial divide.

    4. You know that is a very reasonable criticism, which shows that even those trying to get the story right can have a misstep or two.

Thanks for setting the record straight.

  3. after our recent election, and considering the negative impact fake news had for everyone but donald, i'd like to fine Facebook, and if i weren't in the midst of a maine winter in bumblef%ck-ton, i'd consider punishing it with me absence - take that facebook (lol). good on you, angela - she's only making sure what's happening with far right groups in europe doesn't happen in germany, thank god. we need all the true allies we can get.

  4. not related, but this woman's smack down of tucker carlson (shivers, wretches) is worth watching. he's such a baby, and that's not endearing at the age of 40 or however many times he's been around the sun... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/lauren-ducatucker-carlson_us_586283dce4b0eb5864871b09?

    1. I think she was restrained to call him a hack. I would have said right wing douche.

A lot more of his interviewees need to drop the courtesy and call him out like this woman did. Don't hold back, don't take shit, correct correct correct and call it when you see it. He needs to be taken down often and with great passion.

  5. Not really fake news, but I've been most of the night at YouTube about Fisher, Reynolds and George Michael, and the hideous gay-hate rhetoric in the comments could convince you evolution has said 'fuck it' and given up.

" He’s taking credit for things he isn’t doing and ignoring all the norms and rules that usually apply to presidents. In other words, he isn’t changing."his nascent presidency shows every sign of stymieing the Democrats and the political press."a super-hero who doesn’t have to follow the rules. It’s not about reform for them, it’s about magic. Looking back at previous presidencies, or trying to create a “better message” is inadequate when Trump can lie with impunity and offer up a stirring story of success and victory in an alternate media universe. 1. It's the media's fault. They've learned NOTHING. Are they gullible, stupid or is this a sign of cooperation with the incoming administration?

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-sprint-jobs_us_58651839e4b0de3a08f74233

"President-elect Donald Trump took credit Wednesday for bringing a total of 8,000 jobs to the U.S., when those jobs were part of a previously announced commitment that there’s no evidence Trump was involved in. "

"Media outlets quickly ran with the news that Trump was bringing jobs back to the U.S., in some cases connecting it to the president-elect’s intervention at Carrier several weeks ago that kept 800 jobs at the company from moving to Mexico. "

"In fact, those Sprint and OneWeb jobs Trump says he created were part of a $50 billion investment plan Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp. developed in October, ahead of his election. The plan was announced earlier in December following a meeting between SoftBank’s billionaire owner, Masayoshi Son, and the president-elect. Trump took credit for that investment plan too, even though (again) it predated his election.

Several hours after Trump’s Wednesday remarks, when Sprint confirmed that the jobs had been previously announced, the president-elect continued to take credit.

Trump’s incoming press secretary, Sean Spicer, doubled down on the president-elect’s claim on Twitter later Wednesday."

It's about time the media did their jobs and fact checked this asshole. That IS their job. If they can't prove it's true, they shouldn't be reporting it.

It's about time Anonymous showed up to save the day. They could hack the fake news purveyors, and make sure they won't be doing it again anytime soon.

    So, where are they?

The Russian hacking seems like a perfect venue for then to make an appearance. Unless they were involved in said hacking...

  10. You know why they are fast tracking this, right?

Elections are coming up in Germany.

Breitbart, the right wing and I'm sure the Russians are all planning to take down Angela Merkel the same way they swiftboated Hillary Clinton.

So the Germans are going to cut them off before they have a chance to get started.

Not to mention that Germany is highly intolerant of Nazis, White Supremacists, etc. You can be fined or even jailed for using a Nazi flag the way the good ol' boys in the south brandish their Confederate flag. The Germans know exactly what it stands for.

Oh good grief. What a pile of BS.

Merkel may very well lose, and it will not be due to the Russians. It will be to the open door migrant policy which the Germans are extremely unhappy about, especially after the most recent terrorist event. Open your eyes. The liberal leaders are going down one by one due to their own failed policies and weakening of their countries. People are aware and removing them as fast as they can.
