The Washington Post attempts to understand how Donald Trump's disdain for the truth earned him the White House.

“Since the liar is free to fashion his ‘facts’ to fit the profit and pleasure, or even the mere expectations, of his audience, the chances are that he will be more persuasive than the truth teller.”

That is a 1967 quote from Hannah Arendt included in this WaPo article which may help to explain Trump's bizarre popularity more than just about anything else.

Since Donald Trump fashions his message for the audience he is addressing, and tells them what they want to hear, they could not care less if it is all bullshit or not.

Somebody is speaking their language, reinforcing their prejudices, and essentially complimenting them on their lack of education and poor critical thinking skills.

It must feel like heaven to them.

This from the article:

First, quasi-fired Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski at Harvard University, making the astonishing assertion that the media’s failing during the campaign was not that it scorned Trump — it was that it believed him.

“You guys took everything that Donald Trump said so literally,” he said. “The American people didn’t. They understood it. They understood that sometimes — when you have a conversation with people . . . you’re going to say things, and sometimes you don’t have all the facts to back it up.”

Translation: The press expected their future president to tell the truth, and that was just silly of them.

Trump supporters however did not care about the truth, only that what was said made them feel validated.

Another example:

Second, this eye-popping assertion from Trump supporter/CNN commentator Scottie Nell Hughes on the Diane Rehm Show:

“People that say that facts are facts — they’re not really facts . . . there’s no such thing, unfortunately, anymore of facts. And so Mr. Trump’s tweet amongst a certain crowd . . . are truth.”

Translation: The truth is no longer determined by facts, but rather by who said it and the number of people who are willing to accept it without scrutiny.

Then there was this:

Finally, the president-elect himself, who at a rally to celebrate his successful bribing of Carrier to keep some jobs in the United States, explained that he was impelled to act by a Carrier-employed supporter who had been naive enough to take Trump’s promises seriously.

Watching the evening news, Trump said, he saw the Carrier worker say “‘No, we’re not leaving, because Donald Trump promised us that we’re not leaving,’ and I never thought I made that promise. Not with Carrier.”

Then, Trump said, “they played my statement, and I said, ‘Carrier will never leave.’ But that was a euphemism. I was talking about Carrier like all other companies from here on in.”

So now we know that if Trump is caught in a lie by a supporter, he will simply fabricate another lie to cover for that lie.

This the reporter behind this article labels "truthphemisms."

And THAT is what it will be like to report on a Donald Trump presidency for the next four years.

Fact checking will have no value, and lies will only matter once they pile up high enough to tumble over the wall of ignorance his supporters have erected to protect themselves from the truth.

In the meantime those of us firmly planted in actual reality will stare aghast at virtually every decision made Trump and his "Cabinet of Deplorables" while actively trying to find a future candidate with the skill set to repair the damage left behind by this administration.

Hopefully there will still be something left for them to repair.

I used to criticize Hill about that, but she is a goddess compared to Trump. Many unjust lying accusations were leveled at Hill during the campaign, and on Trump's side, not enough of his multiple multiple multiple lies were identified as such. Did I say multiple? Yes.

As others have pointed out, we are in a post-fact, post-data world now. When Trump says a blatant lie, I sense that his supporters are happy that he has a sassy comeback, and it's fine if it is a total lie.

      Sigh.

Hillary Clinton was NEVER the badass she was made out to be. She would have been the best choice in this go around and it will be sadly proven.

I voted for her - respect her and think her an outstanding American. Too bad I can't say the same for Donald Trump! He IS the devil and will bring massive harm upon our country and world!

America is going to be brought down and we'll have no one to blame but ourselves. China and Russia will overcome us.....Trump will assist them and hopefully he dies a very painful death!

The rest of us are assuredly going to suffer and loose what we once knew and thought was secure! It's not! Be prepared as best you can be!

Why would a billionaire with properties in numerous countries want such a headache?

    Internet:
INSKEEP: And it's also been reported by The New York Times that he owes hundreds of millions of dollars in loans to the Bank of China. Is that also state-owned?

SCHMITZ: Yes, of course. That is one of the big banks of China, and he owes that for a building that was built in Manhattan.

INSKEEP: OK, so given everything you've said, Rob Schmitz, how might it affect China's relations with this incoming president, particularly since, so far he's declined to draw a bright line between his business and public affairs?

SCHMITZ: Well, I mean, the fact that the incoming president of the largest economy on the planet has expressed an interest in building two dozen hotels on state-owned land in China puts China's leadership in a potentially powerful position with President-Elect Trump. If, for example, Trump as president labels China a currency manipulator, as he's promised to do on his first day of office, and if he makes good on his promise to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, it's very possible, if not probable, that China's government would block Trump's business interests inside their country.

If, on the other hand, he pushes forward policies that are favorable to the Chinese government, that could easily clear the way for those 20 to 30 Trump Hotels his company wants to build in China. Either way, this threatens to put China in a more powerful position in its negotiations with the president of the United States. And it puts the U.S. interests that as president he will vow to fight for at potential risk.

Oh that explains why a billionaire wants the headache of being president of the most powerful nation in the the world.

He can use his position to strong arm foreign governments into allowing his businesses to build projects and negotiate sweet deals for them in those countries.

Even if he put his businesses off onto his children or had them run by a blind trust, he could still do plenty to benefit himself.

Trump Camp Scrambles To Defend Diplomatic Blunder Over China And Taiwan

...But what may sound like just a phone call was a split with longstanding U.S. policy meant to protect relations with China, which considers Taiwan part of its country. The U.S. government recognized China’s claim in 1979, and does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan as part of a “one China policy.” For this reason, a U.S. president or president-elect has not, at least as known to the public, spoken with a leader of Taiwan in more than 35 years.

PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP HAS EMBARRASSED AND FORCED FIRST DAUGHTER IVANKA OUT OF CHINA!
    (Well sort of)

    Daily Mail:
"Inside a Trump Chinese shoe factory: 100,000 pairs of footwear branded with Ivanka's name have been made at huge facility (but now it's moving to Africa!)"

    Africa?

    AFRICA?

DIDN'T TRUMP'S MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN CAMPAIGN EMBARRASS FIRST DAUGHTER IVANKA TO MOVE HER SHOE FACTORY BACK TO AMERICA?

WHY NOT MOVE THE FIRST DAUGHTER'S SHOE FACTORY TO THE COUNTRY SHE LOVES? TO THE COUNTRY HER FATHER THE PRESIDENT-ELECT LOVES?

    WHAT THE FUCK?

Originally Ivanka had Chinese making her shoes because it is cheaper to make it in China even though it put Americans out of work.

Now Ivanka is moving her factory to Africa.

    TO AFRICA?

That's okay because Ivanka wants to show African-Americans that she backs her daddy and wants to employ Africans.

WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT'S NOT THE REASON WHY IVANKA IS MOVING HER COMPANY TO AFRICA?

    Daily Mail:
    • The Huajian company is now moving production to Africa because labor there is even cheaper

    • It can employ five Ethiopians at its factory near Addis Ababa for the price of one Chinese worker

SO YOU'RE SAYING IT IS EASIER TO GO BACK TO OUR PAST AND USE AFRICANS FOR SLAVE LABOR TO BENEFIT WHITE PEOPLE LIKE THE TRUMPS?

Okay, Ivanka's shoe factory took advantage of China's below minimum wage workers and took work away from Americans, but now taken advantage of another country's below minimum wages to take work away from Chinese low paid workers?

WHO SAYS BEING A MEMBER OF THE FIRST FAMILY DOESN'T PAY?

    DAILY MAIL:
Christopher Balding, professor of economics at Peking University HSBC Business School, says low-skilled manufacturing jobs were prone to being moved to where labour costs were the lowest and he said even though Chinese wages were far beneath the minimum wage in the United States they were still higher than in Africa....

Huajian's shoes are a fraction of the more than 1,200 shipments of Trump-branded products that have flowed into the US from China and Hong Kong over the last decade, according to an examination of US import data by Our Principles PAC, an anti-Trump political action committee.

Trump has defended his family's decision to license its name to companies that make the goods - from shoes to ties to dress shirts - in China as smart business, while slamming other US firms such as Ford and Nabisco for offshoring.

In a interview with CNN last year Trump said: 'It's very, very hard to have anything in apparel made in this country.'

WHAT THE FUCK? THIS GUY IS OUR PRESIDENT-ELECT?

Mr Zhang agrees: 'Americans say "a lot of shoes are being made in China". But it's because the US is worse at making shoes.'

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3824617/Trump-factory-jobs-sent-China-never-come-back.html

    DONALD! IVANKA!

Is it true Chen and Jaio-Long in China are better workers than George and Betsy in America

    MAKE CHINA GREAT AGAIN

Now Abeeku and Lisimba in Africa are better shoe makers than Tom and Sally in America?

MAKE AFRICANS SLAVES AGAIN TO WORK FOR THE WHITE MAN?

Interesting none of the trump supporters question the fact he makes all his crap overseas.

This is his business plan. He told the automakers at the Detroit Economic club the way to beat the unions and higher wagers was to move the factory to where wagers were lower with no union presence.

When wages go up, move the factory again and continue to do so.

I guess building the same factory over and over is much cheaper than actually paying your workers a living wage. At least it is in trump's world.

      Delete
    2. Don't forget that when these factories are moved overseas, they also skirt any environmental protections. That is why China is so polluted. They're trying to clean up their country now (hence they LEAD the U.S. in solar electricity production) so it's only natural they are now outsourcing to some other country. Africa probably has few if any laws regarding polluting the environment. I doubt they have restrictions on child labor either. So naturally they are the next stop in the cheap consumer goods manufacturing line.

The only way Trump can bring some of those jobs back is to eliminate all EPA safeguards and restrictions, bust all of the unions and eliminate the minimum wage. He can either turn a blind eye to illegal immigration or lower the restrictions so that businesses have all of the cheap labor they want. Republicans love high unemployment. Then they can let desperate people compete for the lowest paying job, then threaten them to work over time without pay (yeah, that executive order is going to go) and take pay cuts or lose their jobs to someone willing to work for less. Add no health care and if you take sick days, you're fired.

Trump is going to be a Republicans dream president.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday it would be valuable for President Donald Trump’s transition team to seek State Department recommendations before contacting foreign leaders, but there have been no requests for such talking points.

“We have not been contacted before any of these conversations,” Kerry told a think tank conference. “I do think there is a value, obviously on having at least the recommendations, whether you choose to follow them or not is a different issue, but I think it’s valuable to ask people who work the desk … their input on what’s the current state, is there some particular issue at the moment, I think that’s valuable, and I would certainly recommend it, but, obviously, that hasn’t happened.”

(Corrects quote in second paragraph to read: “I do think there is a value, obviously on having at least the recommendations, whether you choose to follow them or not is a different issue, but I think it’s valuable to ask people who work the desk … their input on what’s the current state, is there some particular issue at the moment,”)
