The night that Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee disappeared he later turned up on White House property for a clandestine rendezvous. Update!

Remember when we reported that the night before Devin Nunes ran to the White House to spill his guts he had received a phone call and suddenly disappeared into the night?

Well as it turns out we now know where he went.

Courtesy of the New York Times:

Representative Devin Nunes of California, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, met on the White House grounds with a source who showed him secret American intelligence reports a day before he revealed that President Trump or his closest associates may have been “incidentally” swept up in foreign surveillance by American spy agencies.

Wait. So the night before he ran to the White House to tell Donald Trump this disturbing news, he first went to the White House to learn it himself?

Well here was Nunes' supposed explanation courtesy of CNN:

The California Republican confirmed to CNN in a phone interview Monday he was on the White House grounds that day -- but he said he was not in the White House itself. (Other buildings, including the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, are on the same grounds.)

Nunes went to the building because he needed a secure area to view the information, he told CNN. He said he didn't believe the President nor any of his West Wing team were aware he was there, and the White House said Monday it learned of Nunes' visit through media reports and directed any questions to the congressman.

So Nunes HAD to visit the White House grounds in order to view the confidential information in a "secure room." However as many pundits have pointed out there are secure rooms all over Washington including in the Capitol building where Nunes works.

CNN also reports that a government official said Nunes was seen Tuesday night at the National Security Council offices of the Eisenhower building, which has a secure room, and that he arrived and left alone.

So doesn't that mean that whoever gave him this "information" was already IN the Eisenhower building? And did no one see that person arrive or leave? (Update: I just saw Nunes on CNN again and he is now claiming that he had this information for quite awhile, and did not just receive it the night in question. A statement that literally just makes all of this even more confusing.)

CNN further reports that members of Congress, like the general public, must be cleared and escorted into facilities on White House grounds.

Which of course immediately brings up the question, "Who the fuck let Nunes onto the White House grounds? And how could Trump or any of his staff NOT know he was there?"

What does that Cheshire cat always say? "Curiouser and curiouser?"

By the way with these new revelations House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is demanding that Nunes be removed from this investigation.

And Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, is saying the same.

Actually I think that at this point this is not enough and that the FBI should subpoena his ass and get to the bottom of all of this cloak and dagger bullshit. Something is WAY off about all of this.

Update: I think we all saw this coming.

Senate Intel Committee formally targets Jared Kushner in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal

Even as the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Donald Trump’s Russia scandal has dissolved into fiasco due to the increasingly suspect behavior of chairman Devin Nunes, the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation into the same scandal continues to kick into high gear. Its own Trump-Russia hearings are set to begin with their first round on Thursday. In the mean time the Senate Committee continues to show it means business. According to the New York Times, the committee is now formally targeting Trump’s son in law Jared Kushner.

Democrats Demand Devin Nunes Recuse Himself From Russia Inquiry

Devin Nunes Just Gave An Interview That Was A Total Disaster For Trump

House Intelligence Committee Chair Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) did an interview on CNN's The Situation Room where he managed to make the Russia scandal even worse for himself and the Trump administration.

Video of Nunes all but admitting that it was someone in the White House who gave him his information:

Nunes tried to defend himself by saying that if he wanted to, he could have snuck onto the White House grounds at night unseen, “if I wanted to, I could have snuck onto WH grounds at night when nobody would have seen me.”

The interview was a complete train wreck. Nunes offered answers to questions that contradicted themselves. For instance, Nunes tried to claim that his source was a whistleblower, but also that the whole process and the intelligence he saw were routine.

Nunes said that he thought what he saw in the documents was in his opinion wrong, but he refused to say that what he saw was illegal.

Rep. Nunes all but admitted that this was a White House operation. He didn’t provide any explanations, and his answers should only inspire more questions. It is difficult to imagine an interview that could have gone worse for Nunes and the White House.

Devin Nunes Refuses To Recuse Himself, Blames Democrats For His Collapsing Russia Probe

As Nunes refuses to back away from an investigation he can't be trusted to run, Democrats continue to put pressure on him to step aside.

GOP Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, told Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly on Monday that he will definitely not be recusing himself from the Trump-Russia investigation, instead accusing the Democrats of playing politics with the issue.

“Everything is politics here,” Nunes said with a straight face, days after he went out of his way to provide political cover for Donald Trump.

During the softball interview, Nunes told O’Reilly, “Well, I’m sure that the Democrats do want me to quit, because they know I’m quite effective at getting to the bottom of things.”

The goal of this investigation is to get to the bottom of why so many Trump associates – and even Trump himself – have ties to Russia. When Nunes snuck over to the White House last week and tried to hand the president a political shield for making the still-ridiculous claim that President Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, he showed he cannot be trusted to run an independent probe or get to “the bottom of things.”

Not to mention something that often goes unnoticed these days: Nunes himself was a member of the Trump transition team. Why should anybody trust him to run a credible investigation into the president’s team on which he served?

As Nunes refuses to back away from an investigation he can’t be trusted to run, Democrats are right to continue to put pressure on him to step aside.

    1. Devin Nunes must be very confident of re-election in 2018.

Every time I read what he's said or done, I can't help but think how very quiet Darrel Issa has become. That's because he almost lost and is up against the same opponent in 2018. Basically he's keeping his mouth shut and his head down and doing everything he can to try to get re-elected in 2018. That's why Nunes is in the spotlight.

  13. Brittany Jones6:34 PM

DICK CHENEY: 'No question' Russia meddled in the US election, and it could be 'an act of war'

...Cheney said Putin had interfered with the U.S. election as part of his worldwide destabilization efforts.

“There’s no question that there was a very serious effort made by Mr. Putin and his government, his organization, to interfere in major ways with our basic fundamental democratic processes,” Cheney said. “In some quarters, that could be considered an act of war.”

Cheney took what appeared to be a shot at President Donald Trump and his Republican congressional allies, who have disputed the intelligence showing Russian efforts to influence the election.

“I would not underestimate the weight that we as Americans assign to Russian attempts to interfere with our process,” Cheney said.

Trump son-in-law met executives of sanctioned Russian bank; will testify
"A Russian bank under Western economic sanctions over Russia's incursion into Ukraine disclosed on Monday that its executives had met Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and a top White House adviser, in December."

"Kushner previously acknowledged meeting the Russian ambassador to Washington last December and only on Monday did it emerge that executives of Russian state development bank Vnesheconombank (VEB) had talks with Kushner during a bank roadshow last year.

The bank said in an emailed statement that as part of its preparing a new strategy, its executives met representatives of financial institutes in Europe, Asia and America.

It said roadshow meetings took place "with a number of representatives of the largest banks and business establishments of the United States, including Jared Kushner, the head of Kushner Companies." VEB declined to say where the meetings took place or the dates.

There was no immediate comment from Kushner."

Giuliani, the former New York mayor, to his legal team, adding intrigue to a case that has been steeped in international politicking between Turkey and the United States.

Just last month, Mr. Giuliani and another prominent lawyer, Michael B. Mukasey, traveled to meet with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as part of their efforts on behalf of Mr. Zarrab, according to a person briefed on the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the trip.

Mr. Giuliani is close to President Donald J. Trump, raising the question of whether Mr. Zarrab has retained him in an effort to negotiate a beneficial resolution of his case at the highest levels of the Trump administration. Mr. Mukasey is a former federal judge and attorney general in the George W. Bush administration."

REVEALED: Guiliani met with Turkish president on behalf of client charged with violating US-Iran sanctions
Former New York mayor and prominent Donald Trump supporter Rudolph Giuliani traveled to to meet with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on behalf of his client Reza Zarrab—a Turkish gold trader jailed on federal charges of conspiring to violate U.S. sanctions on Iran, the New York Times reports.

..... According to the Times, prosecutors contend Zarrab—who holds dual citizenship in Iran and Turkey—helped facilitate “millions of dollars in illicit transactions” in an effort to bypass U.S. sanctions on Iran and “allegedly tricked numerous U.S. financial institutions into processing barred transactions.”....

Last year, a judge denied a motion to dismiss charges against Zarrab at the bequest of Preet Bharara, the former United States attorney for the Southern District of New York who was fired by Trump earlier this month.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, has had enough of Republican stonewalling on the investigation into Russia’s interference into the 2016 presidential election.

In an editorial written for The Guardian, Swalwell slammed his colleague Devin Nunes (R-CA) for his attempts to take the heat off President Donald Trump for his false claim that former President Barack Obama had illegally wiretapped Trump Tower in 2016.

“In the House, our chairman and Trump transition team member Devin Nunes seems to be running his own intelligence service, receiving classified information regarding our investigation and exclusively briefing it to the president,” wrote Swalwell. “And now he has cancelled Tuesday’s open hearing – where witnesses had already submitted testimony to the committee – proposing instead to have future hearings conducted in secret. Enough.”

What this means, the congressman writes, is that the House now lacks credibility to conduct a proper investigation into Trump and Russia.

"Through his bizarre and partisan actions over the last week, Chairman Nunes has demonstrated to the entire nation why he is unfit to lead our critical investigation into ties between President Trump's administration and Moscow," she said.

After the meeting between Nunes and Trump last week, Trump said he felt "somewhat" vindicated about his unsupported claims that the Obama administration ordered a wiretapping operation on Trump Tower during the 2016 election.

Speier said the timing of Nunes' meeting on White House property, his revelations about information collected on Trump associates, and his briefing with the president are questionable.

"This implies that the Chairman and the White House colluded in a desperate attempt to salvage the President's credibility after the President's bogus wiretapping claims were debunked by his own FBI Director," Speier's statement read.

Speier continued: "In order to make sense of these developments, the White House must release its visitor logs so we can learn who from the President's staff granted the Chairman access to the White House complex and where he viewed the documents."

The congresswoman echoed growing calls for an independent investigation into Russia's alleged involvement in the US election.

The ranking Democrat on the committee, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, blasted Nunes for the move, saying it compromised their committee's investigation.

"At this point, the only people who do know are the chairman and the president," Schiff told NPR. "And given that the president's associates are the subject in part of the investigation, that's wholly inappropriate, and, unfortunately, I think it really impugns the credibility of the chairman in terms of his ability to conduct an independent investigation."
