Stephen Fry uses the Dunning-Kruger effect to explain why some people believe Donald Trump.

Courtesy of HuffPo:

Some supporters of President Donald Trump believe just about everything he says, even when he’s wrong. And Trump himself seems to have absolute confidence in his own beliefs ― again, even when he is demonstrably wrong.

But there is a psychology lesson that could help explain it, according to Cambridge University-educated actor Stephen Fry, who was voted the most intelligent person on TV in the United Kingdom.

This actually fits in quite well with what we heard from that linguistics professor on Thursday.

Essentially the illusion of knowledge drives people to support Donald Trump despite all evidence which demonstrates why they should not.

And changing their minds means replacing what they think they know, with what is factually accurate.

No small feat.

trump's powerful sway on these mindless followers of his is perfect evidence of this theory. Another example of this is the populist rise of palin in '08. She is the perfect example of the "Peter Principle" - one who is promoted to a position that is just beyond their level of competence, aka "in way over her head".

One very important aspect of the Dunning-Kruger effect is the inability to separate what you know from what you don't. This explains why narcissists think they are brilliant. The Downing Effect states that those with low I.Q.'s tend to over-estimate their own intelligence; it's the opposite with a higher I.Q. trump and palin are prime examples of these theories; many a Ph.D will be awarded to those who will pen their doctoral theses on these two idiots!

There may well be many doctoral theses written about people whose obsession with Sarah Palin causes them to mention her name years after her relevance has faded into a discussion where it's tangential, at best, to mention her name.

7:17 Would this be on a par with those people who bring Bill Clinton's name into ANY discussion about sex? Bring Hillary's name into any discussion about attacks overseas? You mean, like THAT? If so, that is waste of time, comparing intelligent people with brain addled lunatics like tRump and $carah.

All of you pro-life, family values, Praise Jeebus voters - THIS is your Republican party. Are you proud?

Republicans in the NC State Senate had a temper tantrum when they couldn't get their way during a budget negotiation so they called a recess. During that recess, while the Democrats were gone, they secretly made changes to the budget specifically designed to hurt the people in the Democratic districts.

"When the session resumed around 3 a.m., Republican Sen. Brent Jackson introduced an amendment that provided an extra $1 million to fight the opioid epidemic. The amendment was passed before Democrats noticed that the $1 million had been taken from education funding in their districts."

They took money away from educating those children they claim are so precious ONLY in Democratic districts just to spite the mean people who were actually trying to work for their constituents.

    How despicable!

"Trump and his aides have figured out a way to shore up his credibility: quoting other, more trusted public figures. "A man who says things that aren’t true is also likely to misrepresent statements that supposedly back him up. "On Friday, Clapper rejected Trump’s and PENCE’s mischaracterizations of his statements." Trump, PENCE, and their aides have misrepresented and abused, if not fabricated, statements from trusted officials. The lesson for the public is clear: Don’t believe the White House’s account of what anyone has said, particularly when it seems to exonerate the president. "

And in every article comments are trump trolls attempting to lie and sway the truth. It is truly disgusting. These people are paid to lie to americans. These people are evil and enable the liar another day. I cannot even fathom what the motives are. The FCC and media ceo's must crack down on misinformation disinformation and down right fake news coming from the likes of trump and his ignorant bunch of scientologist.

  11. I guess I'll have to change my thinking patterns.
I can't seem to hold two thoughts in my mind at one time.
How an obviously intelligent, talented pediatric neurosurgeon can at the same time believe some of the idiot, wrong, caveman thinking like Dr. Carson believes.
I have heard the saying that intelligent people have mental blocks (idiot savants?) like Einstein couldn't even tie his shoes, or that he was a total idiot in front of good looking women, but then many (dumb and smart) men have that problem.

Just read the idiotic statements put out there by folks that read this blog. They counter just to counter Gryphen and spread their hate and fear.

IMPEACHMENT is the ONLY answer for Donald Trump. Republicans coming out now in the media - in full support of him - saying how wonderful Trump is etc. is beyond the beyond!

Do they really think they are going to keep their seats in Congress and throughout the country? They really must think all Americans are idiots! NOT!!!!

When I read about ANY gop speaking in support of the orange blob, it scares me. Is there something going on behind the scenes, that we are unaware of? How many of them, apart from McConnell and Ryan got $$$$ from Russia, so are protecting their own interests?

Using c4p as an example, there are people out there dumb enough to look for a human "savior" sent from heaven above to save them from their plight (if they read their bible this will never happen again) and hang on every word, when a simple bit of research can prove the lies.

First it was ALL Cruz and hating dRumpf until the endorsement came in. Total 180 and I LAUGH. I don't know if it's utter stupidity or an inherent need to be right on the side their golden calf. Either/ayether, this is warned about in their very own scripture and they take to it like mother's milk to a baby.

The same principle explains the popularity of Trump and Fry. Both men love the sound of their own voice, each is a legend in his own mind, but both are essentially full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Is Trump also a plagiarist, as Fry is? And does he also botch metaphors about what makes up an octave on the piano, when he waxes philosophocal? Spare me from overfed, homely men who are their own number one fans.

    1. Your comparison of Trump and Fry holds up, but only to a point. Yes, both men are egotistical, over-rated, and surrounded by sycophants. Neither is an intellectual, in spite of the readers of Radio Times poll electing Fry to that exalted status. Noam Chomsky is an intellectual. Angela Merkel is an intellectual. Fry is a comedian. Trump may be functionally illiterate.

Another similarity is that both men have contempt for women and don't recognize the social consensus of sexual assault barriers. We all know Trump's problems here.

Fry has opined that 14-year-old girls who have sex with rock stars are lucky. He has chastised victims of child sexual abuse for being too full of self-pity. And, oddly for a gay man, he sees himself as an expert on what women truly want. He thinks women dislike sex and engage in it only in order to have a relationship with a man.

In contrast with Trump, Fry admits he suffers from a mental disorder. And the greatest contrast of all, Fry is not trying to screw over the country and the world in order to satisfy his ego.

      Jude.
Appreciate your bringing up Fry's disparaging of child sex abuse survivors.
He himself was raped/sexually abused in juvenile hall. He never got counseling for these atrocities. The cruel disdain he holds survivors in today is a textbook example for unactualized/unreconciled pain from sex abuse trauma.
He hopes and believes that if he scoffs and scorns enough, he just might stop the unstopable hurting he feels.
If I didn't dislike him so much, i would feel sorry for him.
