That time when an actual sitting US president asked why the Civil War had to happen. update!

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book,
Don't know much about the french I took
Courtesy of The Hill:

President Trump during an interview that airs Monday questioned why the country had a Civil War and suggested former President Andrew Jackson could have prevented it had he served later.

"I mean had Andrew Jackson been a little bit later you wouldn't have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart," Trump said during an interview with the Washington Examiner's Salena Zito.

"He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War, he said, 'There's no reason for this.'"

Jackson, the nation's seventh president, died in 1845. The Civil War began in 1861.

The president further questioned why the country could not have solved the Civil War.

"People don't realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why?" Trump said during the edition of "Main Street Meets the Beltway" scheduled to air on SiriusXM.

"People don't ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?"

.......?

You ever read something that your mind refuses to accept that you just read?

And if you have, how often is it usually a quote from Donald Trump?

Fortunately while my mind was drawing a blank, Chelsea Clinton came up with an actual answer.
Yeah, that's essentially the answer.

Mother Jones found a real live historian to weigh in who suggested that perhaps Trump should step down from office until he can be educated past his current fourth grade elementary school level, and is brought up to speed on American history.

His final words were "God help us."

I am of course not a religious man, but I certainly understand the sentiment.

I swear that every day Donald Trump says something that becomes the new most shocking thing I have every heard come out of the mouth of a US president.

Update: It appears Trump is trying to do a little damage control.
Continues to demonstrate a crippling lack of knowledge about American history.

"When Andrew Jackson died in 1845 (16 yrs before the Civil War began), he owned 150 men, women and children."

That is why Jackson is Trump's roll model.

How many minorities work at Trump's properties worldwide at slave wages?

Trump May Open Sequoia Redwoods For Oil And Gas Exploration

Think about this: those giant sequoias (estimated at being between 2,000 - 3,500 years old) were growing along the California coast at the same time that the ancient Greeks were building their empire. They have survived fires, earthquakes, the development of America (and especially, California), droughts, pestilence and all manner of natural disasters. But they may not survive the Trump administration.

When is it okay to say the president might be nuts?

...Jackson was a slave owner and was responsible for the “Trail of Tears,” which killed thousands of Native Americans. And of course, every grade-schooler knows that the Civil War was about slavery and the inevitable clash between America’s “original sin” and the promise of the Declaration of Independence. As The Post’s Aaron Blake put it, this “is just a completely bizarre claim that, once again, suggests a president who speaks loudly and confidently about things he simply doesn’t understand.”

Apparently, Trump learned nothing from his visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

...Is Trump nuts, ill-informed or a liar — or all three?

Stop your lying about Andrew Jackson. President Trump is right. Jackson had a huge heart. I mean he gave the Cherokee Nation and several other Native American tribes an all expenses paid trip on the Trail of Tears, which include a free military escort. Genocide, forced relocation, broken treaties, if that doesn't scream huge heart, I don't know what does.

According to a historian, Donald Trump feels that just as he is the only one who can fix all our myriad problems today, he alone, apparently, could have done a deal to stop the Civil War.

That’s right. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Jefferson biographer Jon Meacham revealed the heights of Trump’s hubris on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Tuesday, saying,

“He told me a year and a half ago or so, a year ago, that, you know, he thought he could have done a deal to have averted the war.”

    According to Meacham,

“It’s very hard, once you’re there, to change. Some people do, and that’s why we talk about them as great presidents. But most people, once they’re in the Oval Office, actually just become more like themselves — and I think in this case that’s on a particularly tragic trajectory.”

Donald Trump has not been able to “do a deal” to get any legislation passed in his first 100 Days, but he thinks he could have stopped the bloodiest war in American history from taking place despite his complete lack of knowledge on either the subject or that period of history.

Trump Says He Prefers a ‘Good Shutdown’ to Making a Deal With Dems to Fund Government

...What’s funny is that this preference for a shutdown over a bipartisan deal comes from the same guy who claims he could have “done a deal” to avert the Civil War. Makes you wonder how he thinks he could have “done a deal” given his desire to avoid talking to both parties.

Of course, Trump clearly has no interest in bipartisan anything, as he shows here with his preference for a shutdown. Trump prefers to rule by executive fiat instead, simply signing executive orders he hasn’t bothered to read and then demanding they take effect, constitutional or not.

    Facepalm.

“People used to believe getting an education was something you had to be privileged to get, that you had to work hard to get. Now we basically force it down everybody’s throats.”

“The number one thing I would like to repeal is the law on compulsory education …,” he told Stephenson. “I believe education is still a privilege, and the kids who don’t want to be there are a larger distraction to the kids who do want to be there.”

Mind you, repealing compulsory education is his “number one thing.” It’s not just a concept he’s thought about casually—it’s his main concern, the reason he’s in office.

Facing Abject Failure, Trump’s Delusions Are Expanding

At this point in his presidency, Donald Trump’s ego is coming into conflict with the lack of any actual accomplishments. In order to sustain his delusions about himself, he is becoming increasingly untethered from reality. We see that as he continues to obsess about his “historic win” over three months ago and his claim that he has accomplished more than previous presidents in such a short amount of time.

But in a couple of interviews lately, the delusions fed by Trump’s own ignorance are quite astounding.

That's when we'll know he is totally off the rails and they can't hide it any more.

But still, they won't do a damned thing to remove him from office. His handlers will just become unelected "president" in his stead.

Jimmy Kimmel’s powerful, poignant Obamacare plea crystallizes the GOP’s dilemma

Social media is burning up over the heartfelt plea for universal health care that Jimmy Kimmel made on Monday night. Kimmel repeatedly teared up as he recounted the jarring discovery that his newborn baby has heart disease that required immediate surgery, and then pointed out that before Obamacare became law, people with preexisting conditions — such as his new baby — could eventually be denied health insurance.

“We were brought up to believe that we live in the greatest country in the world, but until a few years ago, millions and millions of us had no access to health insurance at all,” Kimmel said. “If your baby is going to die, and it doesn’t have to, it shouldn’t matter how much money you make. I think that’s something now, whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, or something else, we all agree on that, right?”

Maybe, just maybe, some (much?) of Trump's ignorance about the history of this country is related to him almost not being "American" -- His mother was an immigrant; is father was first generation. Two of his wives are immigrants. Maybe he just had no talk of our country at home, ever.

Maybe we need to test all candidates on history of our country and government, and most especially the Constitution. His ignorance on top is his flaky personality would certainly have shown him to be unqualified had any such testing been required when he decided to run. WE NEED LAWS IN PLACE IMMEDIATELY to ensure that anyone running for President is totally qualified to be in office. This man IS TOTALLY UNQUALIFIED, and needs to be removed from office. The Republican(s) who do that for the country will be the hero(es) who saves us from this disastrous president. They will deserve the Medal of Freedom, for sure. And, they will be read about in future American History textbooks. Who wants to do that for us? Somebody? PLEASE!!!!!!! It won't happen unless it is done by Republicans.

Democrats confident they can block Trump’s agenda after spending-bill win

Democrats think they have set the stage to block President Trump’s legislative priorities for years to come by winning major concessions in a spending bill to keep the government open.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) secured nearly $5 billion in new domestic spending by exploiting disagreements between Trump and GOP lawmakers over spending priorities.

Democrats’ lopsided victory on the five-month deal, which is likely to be approved this week, means it will be very difficult — if not impossible — for the GOP to exert its will in future budget negotiations, including when it comes to Trump’s 2018 budget blueprint.

After Watching Fox News, Trump Flips Out And Calls For A Government Shutdown

Senate aides are reporting that after watching the morning news shows, a.k.a. Fox and Friends, Donald Trump reversed course on the government funding bill and is now calling for a government shutdown.

Trump is an avid viewer of Fox and Friends. The President watches at least six hours of cable news per day, and half of it is Fox and Friends, so if someone on Fox said that the deal is a loss for Trump, the President is ready to trigger a government shutdown basically because Fox News told him to do so. Trump watches Fox beginning at dawn each day, so the odds are good that Trump saw criticism of the deal on Fox, flipped out and called for the government to be shutdown.

The story is more proof that the most powerful influence on Trump’s policy is what he sees on Fox News.

Indictments are coming. So now Trump is doing everything to distract from them.

Yes, multiple indictments from 2 federal grand juries. Yet to come is NY State indictments, possibly Trump himself in the cross hairs.

    RICO, fraud, Russia....

Nice try, Gryphen. You dont know Andrew Jackson. HOW CAN YOU WRITE ABOUT SOMEONE YOU DONT EVEN KNOW???? smh

Emperor Drumpf has a GIANT portrait of Andy Jackson on his office wall. Pretty darn sure Drumpf knows A LOT more about what Jackson today is thinking than you do! AND WE KNOW JACKSON SUPPORTS DRUMPF!!!!!

Anon 11:01: You nailed it, bro' !! Especially the part about The Trumpster and his portrait of Andrew Jackson. The reason I'm as wise as I am is that I have a macrame owl hanging on the wall above my computer!!!!

The idiocy of Trump is almost identical to Palin' s many clusterfucks. Trump' ridiculous comments about Jackson and the Civil War reminded me of the Wasilla dimwit's "Bus Tour" and her lack of knowledge about Paul Revere.

    My head hurts.

  37. There's plenty of historical evidence Andrew Jackson was a tough, strong man. Like some men with those characteristics, he also seems to have been callous, self-centered, and lacking in empathy.

Maybe that's why Trump relates to him--although Trump has yet to live up to the strength and toughness of Old Hickory, who I believe was shot at least 6-7 times and survived. Trump notoriously went to great lengths to avoid being shot at in Vietnam.

I'm no historian, but I can't recall much evidence that Andrew Jackson had a big heart. Maybe that's another reason Trump can relate to him. Jackson's ego was probably at least as outrageous as Trump's, but unlike Trump, Jackson had the balls to support his high opinion of himself.
