Donald Trump defends White Nationalists and claims that the "Alt-Left" started the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

(The Nazi support starts around the 7:10 mark.)

Courtesy of the New York Times:

President Trump angrily defended himself on Tuesday against criticism that he did not specifically condemn Nazi and white supremacist groups following the weekend’s deadly racial unrest in Virginia, and at one point questioned whether the movement to pull down statues of Confederate leaders would escalate to the desecration of George Washington.

In a long, combative exchange with reporters at Trump Tower in Manhattan, the president repeatedly rejected a torrent of bipartisan criticism for waiting several days before naming the right-wing groups and placing blame on “many sides” for the violence on Saturday that ended with the death of a young woman after a car crashed into a crowd.

He said that “before I make a statement, I like to know the facts.”

And he criticized “alt-left” groups that he claimed were “very, very violent” when they sought to confront the nationalist and Nazi groups that had gathered in Charlottesville, Va., to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from a park. He said there is “blame on both sides.”

“Many of those people were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee,” Mr. Trump said. “This week, it is Robert E. Lee and this week, Stonewall Jackson. Is it George Washington next? You have to ask yourself, where does it stop?”

He noted that the first American president had owned slaves.

Mr. Trump defended those gathered in the Charlottesville park to protest the statue’s removal, saying, “I’ve condemned neo-Nazis. I’ve condemned many different groups. Not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch.”

(Uh..that was a white nationalist protest march. Of course they were white nationalists.)

Again and again, Mr. Trump said that the portrayal of nationalist protesters in the city were not all Nazis or white supremacists, and he said it was unfair to suggest that they were. “Not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me.

Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch,” he said, adding that blame for the violence in the city – which also took the lives of two Virginia state troopers when their helicopter crashed – should also be on people from “the left” who came to oppose the nationalist protesters.

“You had a group on one side and the other, and they came at each other with clubs, and it was vicious and horrible. It was a horrible thing to watch,” the president said. “There is another side. There was a group on this side, you can call them the left. You have just called them the left, that came violently attacking the other group. You can say what you want. That’s the way it is.”

You know I often talk about watching Donald Trump speak with my jaw hanging on the floor in disbelief.

And that is certainly how I watched this.

Trump's attempts to blame the counter protesters and suggest that THEY were the ones who started the violence was, simply put, stunning.

He provided cover for the neo-Nazis, Klan members, and White Supremacists who beat peaceful protesters and murdered a young woman.
And clearly they both heard and appreciated that.

When I watched him today, I had such a sick feeling in my stomach. A combination of dread, anger, sadness and disbelief. What are we going to do? Who will stand up to this horror of a man? Everyday I wonder what new thing he'll say or do. Every day I'm horrified. He is not my president, and never will be.

I agree. Remember when a president was someone we all admired, respected, looked up to no matter which party they were members of? Not anymore. tRump has demeaned the office so badly, I think the WH will have to be fumigated when him and his co-horts leave. Dubya was not too bright, but Donnie Two Scoops is an unmitigated DISASTER. How anyone with an ounce of self esteem can work for him, it boggles the mind. I have lost all respect for Kelly.

WTF happened to most of our elected officials? Oh, I know, they sold their integrity to the highest corporate bidder. Which goes a long way to explaining most of the social ills/diminishing middle class in this country. I am sick of their constant shell games used to distract and inflame while continuing to fill their pockets and drag this country down. I want to see their fucking integrity or I want to see them out of office.

Begin teaching the Articles of Secession and Stephens's Cornerstone speech. Show pictures of lynchings and the lynch mobs who picnicked as if attending a joyous occasion. Tell the true story of Tulsa, Rosewood, and sad history of mob rule that terrorized African Americans for years.

When I was a little girl in Jim Crow USA, African Americans had to enter the back or side door, sit in cramped unheated or in air conditioned waiting rooms, wait to be served last in any retail store, step off the sidewalk if a white person approached, and suffer countless other indignities. There was a white neighborhood which all African Americans were told to stay away from, not even to drive through. Interestingly enough, this was a poor neighborhood that would not in any home ever have had a Black housekeeper or maid.

To hear the POTUS verbally, publicly approve and praise white supremacists is sickening! But I will work harder to get him out of office. He does not represent the principles, values, or spirit of this great country. Instead, he is antithetical to the Constitution, to liberty, to equality, to justice in the same manner that vice is antithetical to virtue.

CNN’s Don Lemon: That Was the ‘Real Donald Trump’ You Saw Today

The CNN host told President Trump he should “go back to school and get an elementary education on how this country started.”

“Wow, that was something else,” Jake Tapper said on CNN after President Donald Trump finished speaking to the press about Charlottesville Tuesday afternoon.

For the next hour, Tapper, Wolf Blitzer, and a wide-ranging panel of contributors and guests systematically broke down everything that was wrong with the president’s refusal to differentiate between neo-Nazis and those who were protesting against them, a complete reversal of the written statement he delivered one day earlier.

But it was perhaps CNN’s own Don Lemon who delivered the strongest rebuke of Trump’s latest comments.

“It is hard to imagine if that domestic terrorist action had been committed by somebody who was, instead of a white supremacist terrorist, a Muslim terrorist,” Tapper said, “it is impossible to imagine President Trump saying that both sides are responsible for the violence, saying that the people that came out against these extremists are equally to blame.”

“This was a president that has lost touch with the country he represents, it's that simple,” CNN political director David Chalian added.

“It wasn't crazy to hope that Trump might [change his stripes] during the transition and the beginning of his presidency. I think it is getting a little crazy to hope for that at this point,” conservative pundit Bill Kristol remarked.

“This is a country that is grappling on what it means that we have a president who doesn't seem to think that his first instinct should be what everyone’s instinct is, which is to really denounce neo-Nazis and to say that he doesn't want that support,” Nia-Malika Henderson said.

And then it was Lemon’s turn.

Everything he said today was horrific. And then, as he walked away and was asked if he'd be going to Charlottesville, it got worse. It didn't register with him why he was being asked that. He went right into talking about owning a house and a big winery. Over the weekend in a tweet, he called Heather Heyer "the young woman" who was killed. We knew of her death first, but he didn't tweet about her until after he tweeted about the two VA officers whose helicopter crashed. And they deserved his recognition, yes. He tweeted about them 35 minutes before he tweeted about her--he had no interest in her when he did his usual of praising law enforcement, and later on someone surely made sure he mentioned her (although no one thought to mention the 20 other victims). He never tweeted about Heather, and never mentioned her family, again, but 3 hours and 20 minutes later he again tweeted about the officers. He named them. He sent out condolences to their families. He posted a picture of a ceremonial police officer holding a folded US flag. Today, he again referred to Heather as "the young woman"--he didn't remember her name. He was also asked if he'd be reaching out to her mother with a call. He had to say yes. If he goes to Charlottesville, it will be to attend ceremonies for the deceased officers (we know how he loves to exploit), and he'll have to do something to show some decency toward Heather's family, too.

Trump Wants Republicans To Use The Steve Scalise Shooting To Justify His Racism

...Here is the talking point that Trump wants Republicans in Congress to use, “From cop killing and violence at political rallies, to shooting at Congressmen at a practice baseball game, extremists on the left have engaged in terrible acts of violence.”

There is no low that Donald Trump won’t sink to in an effort to save his own skin. Trump is in real trouble as the blowback from his support for racist violence is growing stronger, so the President is trying to hide behind the shooting of a member of Congress.

    Alt-Left
Researchers who study extremist groups in the United States say there is no such thing as the “alt-left.” Mark Pitcavage, an analyst at the Anti-Defamation League, said the word had been made up to create a false equivalence between the far right and “anything vaguely left-seeming that they didn’t like.” Some centrist liberals have taken to using this term. “It did not arise organically, and it refers to no actual group or movement or network,” Mr. Pitcavage said in an email. “It’s just a made-up epithet, similar to certain people calling any news they don’t like ‘fake news.’”

    Antifa
“Antifa” is a contraction of the word “anti-fascist.” It was coined in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s by a network of groups that spread across Europe to confront right-wing extremists, according to Mr. Pitcavage. A similar movement emerged in the 1980s in the United States and has grown as the “alt-right” has risen to prominence. For some so-called antifa members, the goal is to physically confront white supremacists. “If they can get at them, to assault them and engage in street fighting,” Mr. Pitcavage said. Mr. Lenz, at the Southern Poverty Law Center, called the group “an old left-wing extremist movement.”
Members of the “alt-right” broadly portray protesters who oppose them as “antifa,” or the “alt-left,” and say they bear some responsibility for any violence that ensues — a claim made by Mr. Trump on Tuesday.

But analysts said comparing antifa with neo-Nazi or white supremacist protesters was a false equivalence.

    Maddow said:

This was a lot of things today. It was not apparently a mistake, and at some point, it is going to have to stop being treated as a surprise. This was not the President accidentally blundering into something that inadvertently sounded like sympathy for people with unpopular political views. This is on purpose. This is what it is meant to be. The President building up and trying to center up in American politics a long standing force in white American politics and culture that we have been trained to think of as a fringe thing, but it does have a very long history, and it does have real force.

The President is not messing up here. He did not trip and accidentally praise white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and pro-Confederate demonstrators who actually killed somebody this weekend. This is not a screw-up. What he is building back up is something that was a long standing force for political power and terror for generations, and he is doing what he can to help them come back.

The MSNBC host said that Trump is doing what he can to build the racists back up and that it is working.

The reality is that anyone who followed the 2016 presidential campaign understands that these beliefs are nothing new. Trump has always dog whistled these beliefs, but now that he is in the White House, Trump is not trying to be subtle.

Maddow was correct. This is an intentional political strategy. Trump is an unpopular president who can only play to his base, and his base of support is the racist far right. Trump is trying to use the presidency to revive something deadly. Racism has never gone away, and for Donald Trump is the fuel for his presidency.

"You must understand the pressures on Trump voters . . . job loss, drug abuse, watching their communities decline . . . "

    "Try to understand Trump voters . . . they represent real grievances . . . "

No longer. You can kiss that shit good-bye.

I wish that the far left and the far right would just annihilate each other in a circular firing squad.

They are equally abhorrent and no peace can come as long as either walk the face of this earth.

Buh bye, good riddance, can't happen soon enough.

‘You can’t be a very fine person and a white supremacist’: GOP leaders knock Trump’s Charlottesville remarks

Following President Donald Trump’s circus-like press conference, Republican leaders are condemning his blaming of both sides for the terrorist attack in Charlottesville, Virginia.

    http://www.rawstory.com/2017/08/you-cant-be-a-very-fine-person-and-a-white-supremacist-gop-leaders-knock-trumps-charlottesville-remarks/

...“What Trump did today was a moral disgrace. What he did is he reverted back to where he was on Saturday and made it very clear that what he read on [Monday] was a hostage tape.”

“The reason it’s a moral disgrace is this: this generation for the last 50 or 60 years understood there was something unique about the history of slavery and racism in this country,” he continued. “That we had to cure this original sin. Because it was followed by 100 years of state-sponsored oppression.”

“What Trump is missing here is the uniqueness of white supremacy, KKK and Nazism,” Krauthammer explained. “This was instigated, instituted, the ride began over a Nazi riot. A Nazi rally. And the only killing here occurred by one of the pro-Nazi, pro-KKK people.”

For reasons... I am triggered at defcon fiftybamzillion. I figure I'm not alone.

I started to look for what any of us diverse people have in common and it's our love. Love defines who we are as a people. We love the Constitution. I know others claim to love and I would believe them except there is a fire burning behind their eyes and they are proud in who they hate. We believe a merry band of outlaws had a good idea when drawing up the rules and regs to govern our rowdy lot. And understand, each signer of the Declaration of Independence risked everything - family, land, income, name, job...

I survive this nightmare by connecting with my family, friends, and neighbors. I live in an apartment complex so that's a lot of people. But it's important. For good or bad we all live there in the here now. For good or bad we have to cooperate with folks NOT LIKE US in order to maintain community harmony. This is how we win in the end. Gandhi was correct (ok, he usually hit the mark but still, nice to have validation). We think global and big picture and act small to complete our part of the puzzle. We don't have to like each other. We do have to get along.

I remember the Nazis of old. There is nothing 'Neo' about them now. Nazis don't share. They weren't born that way.

Love each other. It's how we survive this thing. Oh, and Rule Number 9

A 22-minute documentary released Monday on HBO’s Vice News Tonight offers a chilling look behind the battle lines in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend, with a reporter who embedded with some of the white supremacists who engaged in the violence that ended in the death of one counter-protester and two state troopers.

As a Politico article on the laws governing the surveillance and prosecution of terrorists explains, domestic terrorist groups have a lot more protections than terrorist groups that are based overseas.
Susan Hennessey, the managing editor of the Lawfare blog and a former intelligence community lawyer, explains to Politico that many white supremacist groups are often “intertwined with gun groups and religious identities,” which would likely raise First Amendment and Second Amendment concerns with any federal effort to go after them in the same way the government goes after foreign-based domestic terror organizations.

I feel frustrated listening to Morning Joe protest that Trump voters did not vote for him who defends white supremacists. DJT repeatedly showed who he was yet people chose to elect him anyway for his promises which frankly were not founded in factual reality.

Joe still has blinders on. Trump's whole campaign played to the racism latent in many white people. He allowed it to come to the fore. This past weekend in Charlottesville was to be the beginning of their triumphant march to the future. I hope it woke up a lot of people to what is really going on. Joe, take off you blinders. These are 21st century Republicans, the product of Nixon's infamous "southern strategy."

  52. There was an election (primaries) in Alabama on Tuesday to replace Jeff Sessions. Trump endorsed Luther Strange and Strange got enough of a bump to make the playoffs. He's going up against Moore for the Republican nomination. Moore got 38% and Strange managed to get 32%.

So Trump's endorsement helped this asshole in the election. On TUESDAY.

Until the Republicans, the VOTERS, start to be held accountable for the disaster that is Trump, this will continue. They basically said, fine. We're racists and we want a racist to represent us.

Since Alabama is so strongly Republican it doesn't matter which one wins the primary and goes against the Democrat. The Democrat will lose.

    Because, you know, REPUBLICAN.

Time to start referring to Republicans as the NeoNazi party since the defacto leader of their party, Donald Judas Trump, is apparently a NAZI. Not card carrying but it's clear those are the values he aspires.

Build a wall. Put Muslims in camps. Muzzle and control the press. Hunt down those that oppose him. The similarities to how Hitler came to power are striking. It's the exact same Nazi playbook.

I'm not sure anything will stop it. Not even an assassination.

I watched some of the memorial service today for the young woman who was murdered last weekend in Charlottesville. I feel so terribly sorry for her family and friends. She seems to have been a genuinely good person. The young driver who killed her so wantonly was every bit as ignorant and bad as the young man who killed the people in the Charleston church a couple of years ago. Both saw themselves as white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

I suppose Trump and Fox News would cast me among the "alt-left" for being liberal, a loyal Democrat and a person committed to improving the lives of everyone. But we know that this country does not have an organized "equivalent" to the neo-Nazi groups who were called that until the political far right decided that "alt-right" sounded better. Racists to a person but they didn't want to be branded as such. They then invented the notion of "alt-left" because hate groups always need someone else to blame. Hitler and his band of evil men did the same thing; the group they blamed were the Jewish people who lived peaceably among them. The evilness of people like Steve Bannon, his cohorts in the White House and elsewhere helped by the ignorant and cowardly Donald Trump make me sick at heart.
