Joel Osteen claims he did not open his megachurch to flood victims until he was shamed on social media because the city did not ask him to.

Courtesy of HuffPo:

Pastor Joel Osteen can’t seem to get his story straight about why he didn’t offer his 16,800-seat megachurch in Houston as a shelter sooner for those displaced by Hurricane Harvey.

During an appearance on NBC’s “TODAY” show Wednesday, the head of Lakewood Church said its doors have “always been open.” Minutes later, he appeared to reverse course and admit that the church hadn’t initially encouraged victims to seek shelter there.
“If people were here, they’d realize there were safety issues,” Osteen said during the TV appearance. “We were just being precautious, but the main thing is the city didn’t ask us to become a shelter then.”

Dozens of Houston-area churches, schools and community centers opened their doors to offer temporary shelter to survivors as Hurricane Harvey pummeled the city earlier this week.

First off "precautious" is not a word.

And secondly what a load of bullshit.

For several days this Lakewood Church and its pastor were shamed on social media to open their doors and help those who desperately needed a warm dry place to stay.

Only THEN did they do anything to help.

Did Jesus refuse to multiply the loaves and fishes until somebody called him out on Twitter?

Did Moses only part the Red Sea after being shamed for sitting on his ass on Instagram?

Actually neither of those things actually happened, but you get my point.

If you are going to call yourself a Christian, and preach to people that they should love and care for each other, while accepting millions of dollars in donations, then shouldn't you at least PRETEND that you embrace the teachings of Jesus Christ?

he immediately should have thought of using the building for shelter. period. that is what occurs to the minds of good and charitable people. he said he couldn't b/c without the building being official deemed a shelter they would not have received supplies. but it never occurred to him that someplace, anyplace, with little to nothing more to offer, was better than what people were enduring? he could have brought over blankets and pillows and clothes and food from his own house. he could have contacted people in his wide network of connections. supplies could have been brought in--fewer than with govt. help, but still something. the church was still dry when other places weren't. anything he says about water getting in doesn't make up for the fact that he never initially acted like a true man of god. i have family who live right alongside the barker reservoir (they left yesterday to stay in san antonio). there's a mosque nearby. the mosques have been taking people in. if the church couldn't be opened, what was he doing with his time? even with children, he's supposed to be his god's shepherd. he should have volunteered and rolled up his sleeves and helped.

It's all pretend with these sociopaths. They are laser focused on the corinthian leather that the cloak of piousness affords them. Tithe often and magnanimously is their motto. And the simple fools line up and comply. God demands payment after all. 'He' is rather fickle. It's an ancient scam. You would think after millennium the 'tithers' would figure it out. They never get a meaningful return on their investment. But they never do. The lucky ones suffer only the infirmities of old age and die. The less lucky also suffer the decrepitude of additional illness. All the while the 'pious' ones enjoy the corinthian.

I've always wondered about and questioned Joel Osteen and his wife's lifestyle.

    As a man of God:
    • They live in a 10.5 million dollar house.

    • Look at their appearances, especially his wife and you will say to yourself there are kids that go hungry and do without while they look like that.

It's reported he doesn't receive a salary but when you watch his church services, he's always pushing items mentioned below and it appears that is how they make their personal money.

Also Google Joel Osteen's house and you will say wow.

Who am I to judge him, he may do a lot for people. It is a little hard for me to see his lifestyle while there are children living in poverty.

    Internet:

It has been reported that Osteen stopped taking a $200,000 salary from Lakewood Church in 2005 and that his estimated net worth is $40 million. He also lives in a $10.5 million 17,000 square foot home with six bedrooms, six bathrooms, three elevators, five fireplaces, a guest house and pool house.

    Also from the internet:

While Osteen has reportedly not taken a salary from his gigantic Lakewood Church since the ministry's move to the former home of the NBA's Houston Rockets in 2005, his wallet certainly hasn't been hurting for cash. Residing in a $10.5 million Houston mansion, Osteen reportedly banks over $55 million a year through the sales of his numerous best-selling books and related journals and study guides, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Critics have previously claimed that Osteen uses his ministry, which reaches the homes of over 100 million people, as a vehicle for self-promotion and building his own fortune. Osteen has never shied away from defending his wealth, making no apologies for his success.

If Jesus were alive he would be throwing this guy out of the "temple" and condemning him for the false prophet pharisee he is.

These are who the IRS should be investigating for their tax exempt status as a "church". I'll bet Osteen preaches politics from the pulpit.

I think we all know that Joel Osteen, Pat Robertson, Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell and Jerry Falwell, Jr. are all in it for the lucre, not the love of Jesus. In the book of Luke Jesus teaches that those who wish to follow Him should dispose of their personal property. Can't see Joel giving his 11 million dollar house or Franklin giving his jet away. Guess these xtians don't take the New Testament to heart. I'd just like to see the IRS take their tax exempt status away. They remind me of our politicians, pad their pockets and fuck the rest of us. Pity the believers.

We rebuilt after Sandy. We have a second home on the Jersey shore, for which we worked our assess off to afford the dream.
We had flood insurance, so we got a fairly good deal, no complaints. But we get nothing from FEMA because it is not our primary residence, so we were out of pocket for about 10k plus the 3k the electrician demanded upfront but never returned to do the work.....
Anyway, people are in for a world of hurt and others are lying in wait to prey on them, without a doubt. Anyone with a vacation home on the coast also will not not not get any help to raise the house on stilts from government either. All our residential neighbors have raised their homes in NJ. We have to pay out of pocket, again since it is not primary residence. We are choosing right now not to spend 75k to do this. The price of our home is down, even after the rebuild, from what we paid and still owe on it.
Also, sorry for the rant, lots of people took the fema or insurance money and didn't do the repairs and kept the money. Several houses that weren't totally destroyed are toxic mold dumps, which they still rent to unsuspecting fellow citizens, while the owners kept the money to buy houses in Florida instead of fixing properly their NJ house.
This is going to be a shitshow of epic proportions in Houston.

Joel just wanted to keep his church pristine so that all those steeple who show up Sunday will feel at home and keep the donations coming in.

Having all those unfortunates with their sleeping bags and mattresses lying around the place would be a buzzkill to Joel's operation.

I hate these prosperity gospel types including Joel. Their answer to every misfortune is that the victim only needs to be more sincere in their belief to avoid their misery (which assuredly can be accomplished by a healthy donation).

I always wondered what Joel would say to a homeless person sleeping under a bridge. His message that "god has a box of riches for you if you only believe hard enough" doesn't do much to comfort or help those in true need.

I have to say I kinda like "precautious"

It's like the time before you are being careful, oh, like, say, before the thing you will be cautious about causes you any concern, mainly because you do not know about it yet.

The whole idea is that it is almost the opposite of being "precocious", which we might have said of Osteen if he had had the idea to offer his big church set as a shelter before anyone had to ask.

So, in admitting that he was being precautious, he admits he has no brain and no heart.

    And hooray for new words.

I shall retire to bed soon, but not before I have drinken the last swig of my coffee.

  28. Gov. of Texas gave the OK for the Mexican Red Cross to come and deliver aid.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/mexicos-red-cross-delivers-aid-storm-ravaged-houston-024412762.html

"Mexico's Red Cross sent an envoy of volunteers to storm-devastated Houston on Wednesday, hours after Texas governor Greg Abbott said the state accepted an offer of aid from the Mexican government, including vehicles, boats, supplies and food.

At least 25 people have been killed and tens of thousands driven from their homes after Harvey came ashore on Friday near Corpus Christi as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than half a century, swamping Houston with record rains and flooding.

The support from Mexico's Red Cross, a non-government agency, is separate from the official aid offer.

The convoy of 33 English-speaking volunteers left from Mexico City for Texas, where they plan to work in Houston shelters for 20 days before being replaced by a fresh crop of volunteers.

Abbott said his state would accept the offer of assistance from neighboring Mexico as Harvey, now a tropical depression, spun across southeastern Texas into Louisiana on Wednesday, sending more people fleeing for shelter."

Because the Red Cross is private and not government, they were allowed to cross the border.

Trump administration still sitting on offer from Mexican Government. (Because they're poopyheads and I guess it would look bad for those rapists and bad hombres to be providing help the U.S. can't.)

The Red Cross and other agencies are depending of everyday people for donations; I want to see these non-profit churches and corporations to step it up.

Where are the donations from the oil companies that make billions in quarterly profits? As far as I can see all they have done is immediately raise the price of gasoline, even if it doesn’t come from TX.

Leave it to the oil companies to make a profit off a national disaster.

As for Joel, what about his followers, aren't they allowed to take shelter in his church or is that only on Sunday?

This is what you get when a real phony makes you believe that he and his mission (sic) are real. What a disgrace! I doubt he can recoup his (so-called) reputation. The City of Houston should not have to ASK for help for these poor souls!
