Barack Obama's statement on Trump's repeal of DACA.

Courtesy of Obama's Facebook page:

Immigration can be a controversial topic. We all want safe, secure borders and a dynamic economy, and people of goodwill can have legitimate disagreements about how to fix our immigration system so that everybody plays by the rules.

But that’s not what the action that the White House took today is about. This is about young people who grew up in America – kids who study in our schools, young adults who are starting careers, patriots who pledge allegiance to our flag. These Dreamers are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper. They were brought to this country by their parents, sometimes even as infants. They may not know a country besides ours. They may not even know a language besides English. They often have no idea they’re undocumented until they apply for a job, or college, or a driver’s license.

Over the years, politicians of both parties have worked together to write legislation that would have told these young people – our young people – that if your parents brought you here as a child, if you’ve been here a certain number of years, and if you’re willing to go to college or serve in our military, then you’ll get a chance to stay and earn your citizenship. And for years while I was President, I asked Congress to send me such a bill.

That bill never came. (It is important to point out here, because I see even visitors to this blog who seem confused, that President Obama did not just suddenly decide to introduce DACA, He tried for quite some time to get Congress to pass a reasonable immigration policy, and when that did not happen he took it upon himself to do something.) And because it made no sense to expel talented, driven, patriotic young people from the only country they know solely because of the actions of their parents, my administration acted to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people, so that they could continue to contribute to our communities and our country. We did so based on the well-established legal principle of prosecutorial discretion, deployed by Democratic and Republican presidents alike, because our immigration enforcement agencies have limited resources, and it makes sense to focus those resources on those who come illegally to this country to do us harm. Deportations of criminals went up. Some 800,000 young people stepped forward, met rigorous requirements, and went through background checks. And America grew stronger as a result.

But today, that shadow has been cast over some of our best and brightest young people once again. To target these young people is wrong – because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating – because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. What if our kid’s science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a Dreamer? Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn’t know or remember, with a language she may not even speak?

Let’s be clear: the action taken today isn’t required legally. It’s a political decision, and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us. (This is the only part of this statement in which Obama seems to really go after Trump.) They are that pitcher on our kid’s softball team, that first responder who helps out his community after a disaster, that cadet in ROTC who wants nothing more than to wear the uniform of the country that gave him a chance. Kicking them out won’t lower the unemployment rate, or lighten anyone’s taxes, or raise anybody’s wages.

It is precisely because this action is contrary to our spirit, and to common sense, that business leaders, faith leaders, economists, and Americans of all political stripes called on the administration not to do what it did today. And now that the White House has shifted its responsibility for these young people to Congress, it’s up to Members of Congress to protect these young people and our future. I’m heartened by those who’ve suggested that they should. And I join my voice with the majority of Americans who hope they step up and do it with a sense of moral urgency that matches the urgency these young people feel.

Ultimately, this is about basic decency. This is about whether we are a people who kick hopeful young strivers out of America, or whether we treat them the way we’d want our own kids to be treated. It’s about who we are as a people – and who we want to be.

What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray. What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals – that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation. That’s how America has traveled this far. That’s how, if we keep at it, we will ultimately reach that more perfect union.

As I predicted earlier, this is measured, hopeful, and even inspirational.

And it changes absolutely nothing.

The Democratic lawmakers who may find inspiration in these words were already going to work to help these undocumented young people.

But it will not light a fire under the conservatives. And with his current approach Obama is not in a position to put any real pressure on them.

He could though. He could put a great deal of pressure on them, by taking a leadership position within the resistance and using his fame and influence to really fire up the people to exercise their influenced over their members of Congress and the Senate.

He could go on late night TV shows, cable news programs, write articles for the newspapers, post more aggressive articles on Facebook, and really put Donald Trump in the hot seat.

If he did that it would enrage the Right Wing, but it would also fire up the progressives in a way that no other leader is in a position to do right now.

Trump is already demonstrating his fear of the backlash he might face over this repeal, just imagine now much more terrified he would be seeing Obama coming over the horizon leading a huge rally of progressives, undocumented immigrants, and young people right up to the gates of the White House to protest this heartless decision.

Shit, I'm ready to take leave from my job, buy a ticket, and fly to DC myself if Obama was taking point.

Donald Trump and the Republicans are counting on us to be civilized and play by the rules, but I think it is time to start giving them a reason to fear us, fear our voices, fear our passion, and most of all fear our votes.

  1. It makes no difference. If President Obama lit himself and twenty republican senators on fire the GOP would just stand around with marshmallows. Lindsey Graham might blame Susan Rice. Someone would scream Hilary's name.

I just watched a republican congressman who is considered moderate vacillate so much on MSNBC about DACA he basically said Trump saved it---and isn't he great!

We are not dealing with people who are working in the real world here. Or maybe they are. Maybe they know there is no way in hell any of them have three balls among them and they don't care what the hell an ex-democratic President does---especially Obama. They are afraid Trump will tweet at them.

We need to understand that with a delusional WH, scared shitless senators and insane freedom caucus
congressmen, Barack Obama going on tv won't mean a damned thing to them. Hell--they didn't give a good goddamn when he was POTUS and did those things to forward his agenda. Don't think they'll give a rat's ass now.

We need to fire our politicians. We have invested years, money and education in these people and made them Americans regardless of their citizenship. Why would we send all that elsewhere? Oh, because the idiots we've elected and re-elected are not interested in investing in this nation, they are just interested in putting more money in their own pockets. And how do they do that? By sucking the dick of corporations and making it about "us vs. them" at the expense of education, healthcare and the middle class while fake-bowing to Xtianity. I hope there is a hell just for them and I hope they go there.

So we have 800,000 people who have willingly documented themselves, put their lives on the line should they be convicted of a crime, willingly made themselves easier targets for ICE, have cooperated with provisions by the government promising them fair treatment, and are willing to serve the country and earn their place here. Now Trump and other malicious nativist pigf--king bigots want to screw them over. For what purpose does this serve?

Btw it isn't amnesty or rewarding criminal behavior. One has to be old enough to appreciate their acts and act on their own volition to be able to be charged with a crime. DREAMers did nothing of the kind. So people can take your "Law and Order" fetish/ignorant ramblings and shove it somewhere painful.

DACA Is and Will Always Be Constitutional

...To be clear, a decision to abandon the DACA program would be a political decision — not a legal one. In fact, the U.S. government has repeatedly — and successfully — defended DACA against constitutional challenges. Indeed, every legal challenge to the DACA program has failed.

Correct me if I am wrong but I read the court ruling was split about DACA. if it had been deemed unlawful why was it still in place? Why was it a decision for Trump to make that they come out saying Obama was lawless?

My heart breaks for all those effected in fear of their lives and facing exhale from their families. Mexican families I see in a hospital setting rally and are more supportive and help sick family members. Given strong family ties this must be tremendous sorrow for most.
Once again people around the world will be astonished America and the American dream no longer exists.

The time is nigh for the Democrats to begin introducing their 2020 hopefuls; Obama did his part, he deserves to enjoy his civilian status and let someone else do the heavy lifting.

There is currently so much national outrage that now would be the perfect politically expedient opportunity for the next group of young Democratic hopefuls to show their negotiating skills and help calm the waters and come up with some possible solutions to what is ailing us.

Who's in this next group? Anyone heard anything? Think about it, any POTUS hopeful that could help during this political crisis would already have a leg up in 2020, yet instead we hear from Hillary, who will never run again, and Obama, who already did his part.

Trump's already campaigning for 2020, why aren't we Dems and Independents following suit?

Let's see the Democrats get out the vote in 2018 and take back some seats.

If they can't manage to do even that, it doesn't matter who they run in 2020.

Remember the census is coming. The census by which district lines are drawn. The census which is woefully underfunded due to Trump cuts.

The gerrymandering and voter suppression of which not much has been done.

Then there's that oh, so exciting platform the Democrats have decided on. Healthcare? Nope. Immigration? Nope. Tax Reform? Nope.

It's Anti-Trust. Right. How exciting. How timely. How...what the fuck is Anti-trust?

OH, and their exciting Papa John's slogan: "A Better Deal: Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Wages."

      Better Pizza.

      Yeah, we're doomed.

    ======================================

What is DACA? A look at immigrant program Trump is ending
By ASTRID GALVAN - The Associated Press

    WHAT IS DACA?

DACA was created by President Barack Obama in 2012 after intense pressure from immigrant advocates who wanted protections for the young immigrants who were mostly raised in the U.S. but lacked legal status.

The program protects them from deportation granting a two-year reprieve that can be extended and by issuing a work permit and a Social Security number.

DACA recipients must meet several requirements, including having no criminal record. Immigrants who are accepted into the program and later get arrested face deportation to their home country.

They also must have been 30 or younger when the program was launched and brought to the U.S. before age 16.

The application cost is nearly $500, and permits must be renewed every two years. The application and renewal process take several weeks, and many immigrants hire lawyers to help navigate the process.

DACA does not give beneficiaries legal U.S. residency; they are simply given a reprieve from deportation while being allowed to legally work.

The overwhelming majority of DACA recipients are from Mexico. One in four of them live in California.

I heard on NPR today that no one will be deported until their work permits expire, that's the way they want to work it have a rolling deportation based on the expiry date of their permits so it all doesn't happen at once.

    2. In NPR's dreams.

Here's the real clincher. who said Mexico will take them? How much will this cost us and how many businesses will lose money and workers?

How is this going to happen? Are we going to round them up and put them on busses, drag them out of colleges and let those colleges eat the bill? Let the landlords who they are paying rent to just eat it? It's a myth that the right wing spews that they are all on welfare.

It's typical of Trump and his idiotic followers to push that if only they left Americans could have a job. They grew up here. They are in our military, and make up a lot of our caregivers in nursing homes .

It's cruel but it's more than that it's barbaric. They know no other country this has been their home for most if not all of their lives.

America will have refugees just let that settle in. How "f"ing weak do we look if say Great Britain or Germany or France or Canada has to take in people we kick out.

The shame of it. A once great Nation that prided itself on taking in "Your tired and your poor" has now cast itself as an angry, intolerant bunch of white priveledged red neck idiots who forgot that we are a Nation of mutts.

Ask anyone their nationality. What is an American? This crap is just Trump throwing red meat to his base. It seems to me right now he has better things to do and all his effort should be on his country and the devastation Texas is suffering. Seems to me he needs a priority check, seems to me he's a total failure.

“The most explosive charge in the Steele document was the claim that Trump hired prostitutes to defile a bed slept in by former President Obama,”
“The important factor to consider is that Trump did not engage with the prostitutes HIM$elf, but instead allegedly sought to denigrate Obama.”“If there is anything consistent in what we have learned about President Trump, it seems that his policies are almost exclusively about overturning and eradicating anything related to President Obama’s tenure,” Sipher wrote. “In this sense, he is AKIN to the ancient Pharaohs, Byzantine and Roman Emperors like CALIGULA, who sought to obliterate the existence of their predecessors, even destroying and defacing their images. Is it inconceivable that he would get some satisfaction from a private $HAMING of the former president?” aka orgasmic for tinydjT.
