House passes driverless car bill. Welcome to the future!

Courtesy of The Hill:

The House passed a bipartisan driverless car bill on Wednesday, advancing what could become the first set of federal laws for the emerging industry.

The “Self Drive Act” was unanimously approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee in July, before Congress left for August recess, and passed the full House on a voice vote.

“Self-driving cars hold the promise of making America’s roads safer, creating new economic opportunities, and helping seniors and those with disabilities live more independently," Commerce Chairman Greg Walden (R-Ore.) and Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) said in a joint statement. “This bipartisan bill paves the way for advanced collision avoidance systems and self-driving cars nationwide, and ensures that America stays a global leader in innovation.”

.....

Lawmakers and industry advocates say it is necessary to speed up the development of driverless technology in order to improve traffic safety. The bill comes amid an uptick in traffic deaths in the U.S.

"Self-driving cars have the potential in the future to reduce deaths and injuries from car crashes, particularly those that result from driver distraction," Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.), the top Commerce Committee Democrat, said on the House floor ahead of the vote. "This bill allows for testing and deployment of self-driving cars to help the United States reach that potential sooner."

According to one estimate, self-driving cars could reduce traffic fatalities by up to 90 percent.

I know that a whole lot of people are still uncertain about all of this, but I for one can hardly wait.

I was never a big fan of driving in the first place, so it is not something I plan to miss.

Besides I am getting older, and having a car that can take me where I want to go without having to worry about if I can see at night, or whether or not my reflexes are still fast enough to avoid collisions, or if I can even remain conscious for a drive lasting longer than two hours, sounds pretty damn good to me.

With people overbreeding all over the world, especially in Cousin Fuck, Alaska, reducing deaths from car accidents probsbly isn't a good thing.

    1. Will probably impact organ donations too. Helmets for motorcyclists saw a drop in available organs.

Remember that cartoon Wally? Where people got so fat and lazy? We are almost there. Then the aliens will eat us because we would be mindless cattle instead of a thinking species.

WALL-E was not fiction, alas. Half the reason people are supporting Trump is because they are sick, tired, entertaining themselves to death, and w/o curiosity or faith (or hope) in the future.

The other half is their extreme belief in an afterlife where everything will be OK. And Trump will bring it on -- through WWIII (their suffering over in minutes).

Trump brilliantly exploited this and is just playing now -- but he's realizing it's not as fun as he thought it would be.

Wow there will be some real ding dongs in the future. Depending on robotics to wipe the ass will be dangerous. So cant you imagine jumping in the car after a few adult beverages and the self driving car goes rogue? Yikes!!! or they plot to take over the usa election? or they are armed? Holy hot wheels jetson!! I like driving my 53 chevy truck on a country road.

And how will they maneuver in downtown traffic that is shaped by seemingly constant roadworks?

Expect delays... as these cars will just stop, go "tharn" (rabbits stuck in the headlights).

Seems like congress has much more to clean up and do than worried about self driving cars. Whose gift was that? Did trump and stumps deliver?

So, a driverless bill is the most pressing bill they had to tackle in Congress?
    I see.

A stupid idea -- driverless cars. Invented by a bunch of guys just to see if it could be done. What's next? Driverless trucks? Oh, that's already being worked on. Planes? already thought of...

The U.S. position of President? Done!

Welcome to the future. Where nobody is in charge or will take responsibility. Trump is showing us how.

Looking forward to it so I can take trips without having to have my husband drive. My health is not what it used to be and I would love to make a few short trips in the state. I cannot drive at night and my eyesight is not what it used to be once upon a time. I love the idea.

I for one do not have much faith in driverless cars, supposedly they use the lines painted on the street to guide them. What happens when it snows?

Also what happens if they get hacked?

The morons around here have been changing all the intersections to roundabouts, citing they are safer. What a joke, one intersection is now up to 165 accidents/year, the next highest intersection has accident rate of 99.

They probable could get the accident rates down by installing breathalyzers and drug testing in all cars, as well as blocking cells phones when the ignition is turned on, but I am sure people would complain their “constitutional” right to endanger the safety of others is infringed upon.
