Americans are increasingly confident in the news media and less so in President Donald Trump’s administration after a tumultuous year in U.S. politics that tested the public’s trust in both institutions, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday.
The poll of more than 14,300 people found that the percentage of adults who said they had a “great deal” or “some” confidence in the press rose to 48 percent in September from 39 percent last November. Earlier this year, Trump branded the entire industry as the “enemy of the American people.”
The percentage of those who said they had “hardly any” confidence in the press dropped to 45 percent from 51 percent over the same period.
On the flip side Americans who say that they have a "great deal" or "some" confidence in Trump went from 52% in January to 48% in this most recent poll.
Of course that still seems much too high, but I have confidence that it will only continue to slide.

Mulvaney walks back Trump's comments on wiping out Puerto Rico debt
White House budget director Mick Mulvaney on Wednesday walked back President Trump’s comments calling for the hurricane-ravaged island's debt to be wiped out.
“I would not take it word for word,” he told CNN. “We are not going to deal with the fundamental difficulties Puerto Rico had before the storm.”
In a separate interview with Bloomberg News, the Office of Management and Budget chief was even more explicit in saying Puerto Rico would have to fix its debt problem on its own....

Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump fined over late financial disclosure forms: report
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump were each fined after they failed to submit financial reports required by the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) on time, McClatchy reported Tuesday.
This is the second time Kushner has missed the deadline to file the forms and his second fine for doing so. Kushner and Trump were fined $200 each over the most recent missed deadline.
The financial disclosure forms submitted by Trump and Kushner also included different values for their personal assets. Some of those values had discrepancies of hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to McClatchy....

ReplyDeleteDems baffled by Trump's Puerto Rico debt comments
Is President Trump pushing to eradicate Puerto Rico’s debt, or isn’t he?
That’s the question the Democrats are asking Wednesday, after the president suggested hours before that he’d support loan forgiveness for the embattled U.S. territory as it struggles to recover from the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.
“The problem is that I don’t know how to interpret it,” said Rep. Jose Serrano (D-N.Y.), a Puerto Rican native who supports loan forgiveness for the island.
“I know you guys need answers that sound intelligent, but with this president you don’t know what he’s going to say in an hour,” he added. “If he means the debt has to be forgiven, the debt has to be dealt with, the debt has to be taken care of, I’m all for it. But does he mean that? Is he saying that?
“That’s the question.”....

Republicans are headed for a disappointing end to their year in power
ReplyDeleteThe first year of unified Republican control of the government is winding to a disappointing end.
Key GOP campaign promises — ObamaCare repeal, tax reform, and a border wall, among them — remain undone. Congress hasn’t passed a budget, nor have they stopped legislating by crisis. Over 200 of President Trump’s nominees, the people responsible for implementing the president’s agenda across the government, are still waiting for confirmation in the Senate.
So, what’s the deal? Democratic obstruction? The 60-vote rule?
None of the above.
The real reason that Congress can’t get anything done is because the McConnell Senate only works 2.5 days per week.
In the age of the 24-hour news cycle, instant communication through text and social media, technological innovations ranging from driverless cars to DNA modification, the Senate — one third of the most powerful government in the world — is a living anachronism.
Consider the Senate’s workweek. On most Mondays, members fly in from their home states. They have to return to Washington D.C. by 5:30 p.m., in time to do some hard work: Casting one or two votes on noncontroversial matters, each lasting 15 minutes. Then they’re done for the day.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Senate joins the rest of America and shows up for a full workday. But then? It’s TGI Thursday. Between March and October, the Senate finished work for the week each Thursday by 2:30 p.m., on average, but sometimes as early as 12 p.m.
It gets worse.

I know a lady who is a "Reiki Master"
I know several sisters that all believe in and frequent their psychics.
Every one of the aforementioned persons considers themselves "Christian"
...but not one of them has read the Bible.
Bits and pieces of it, sure - but not cover to cover (as I have).
Most of them voted for and still trust Donald Trump.
They hated and still hate Barack Obama. They believe he was born in Kenya and is a Muslim.
They hate Hillary Clinton and believe she should be locked up.
They really believe this stuff...
I know these people - they're otherwise really nice and easy-going folks and I don't dislike them.
I can't understand their thinking processes
...but I don't dislike them.
They are among the percentage that still do and will always support Donald Trump.
