A gunman fired a barrage of bullets on an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas Sunday night, killing at least 50 people and injuring more than 400 others, police said, in the worst mass shooting in modern American history.
From his room on the 32nd floor of a glitzy hotel, the shooter, identified by law enforcement officials as Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, fired shot after shot down on the crowd of more than 22,000, sending terrified concertgoers running for their lives.
“We heard what sounded like firecrackers going off. Then all of a sudden we heard what sounded like a machine gun. People started screaming that they were hit… When we started running out there were probably a couple hundred [people] on the ground,” witness Meghan Kearney told MSNBC.
"People kept dropping and dropping… People were getting shot one foot away from us," she said. “People were trying to save their friends. There were gunshots everywhere. Helping them would’ve meant that we got shot, too.”
There are reports that this man had as many as ten rifles in his possession, and that he killed himself before the police reached him.
As you can hear from this footage the man clearly used at least one fully automatic weapon, which is supposedly illegal.
Currently the motivation for the shooting is unclear.
This is a terrible, terrible tragedy and is being called the worst shooting in American history.

It's my understanding that fully automatic weapons are NOT illegal, it is just that since 1968 (I think that was the year), no more new ones could be sold in the US. However, any that were in circulation could stay in circulation and change hands.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it is long past due to remove all automatic and semi-automatic weapons from private ownership. In addition, anyone with a gun would need to undergo extensive training and a mental evaluation (on their dime) on a yearly basis. Anyone who commits a crime, even without a gun, would lose forever the right to own a gun. Extreme? No. This works in most civilized societies.
They've been regulated since 1934. There were additional restrictions in 1968 and 1986. Select fire (submachine guns and military light arms) that were in the country before 1986 can still be bought and sold. They are as expensive as cars and highly regulated including background checks and fingerprints. Doubtful he had a "fully automatic" gun in a hotel room just because that's a big squad type gun that would weigh the better part of 80 pounds with ammunition. My guess is that if anyone heard multiple rounds going off it was either a police select fire or the gunman had fired so many rounds they were cooking off from the barrel heat.

...Trump’s response was part of a standard White House playbook. The President calls the culprit evil, offers prayers, promises to go to the scene, and sometimes quotes some scripture. What is missing in Trump’s performances is any sense of emotional connection or soul. Donald Trump offers no political leadership. He offers no guidance. He doesn’t really seem to care about the people who got shot in Las Vegas.
For Trump, these moments are about trying to look and sound like a president. It is a pathetic paint by numbers show carried out by a poor actor who can’t make the audience believe that he is capable of living up to the part.
There was no courage in Trump’s statement. The President has no sense of humanity, pain, or suffering.

I have elderly relatives that go to Vegas frequently to see a show and gamble. Not all that different from this shooter (without the shooting). Vegas is full of those folks. This is really strange.
He needed mental heath treatment for his suicidal tendency.

ReplyDelete...If you think part of the problem is guns, you’ve known since the Newtown massacre that literally no outrage is great enough for the country to rethink its march toward greater and greater freedom to arm yourself with more and more powerful weapons. We won’t even have a period of a few weeks in which there will be a push for new gun restrictions only to see it fail. Because we know no new law will be passed.
Fundamentally, we are stuck. All the massacres matter. But they’re only readily politicized along our existing paranoia about Muslim terrorists and white fears of black criminality. Since any action on guns is ruled out, we’re left with more or less emotive versions of “thoughts and prayers.” The easy availability of military style weapons is obvious and immediate cause of these massacres. Human nature contains violence, evil, senseless aggression. But that’s true in every country. We’re the only place where anything remotely like this happens on a regular basis.
But beyond guns – which are absolutely, absolutely necessary to address and dramatically restrict access to – we need to recognize that we don’t have mass violence only because of guns. We have so many guns because America is a deeply violent society. That goes back generations. We have recurrent massacres because we are awash in firearms and also because we are a deeply violent society. Nothing so deeply rooted in our culture can be easily changed. But we could change it. We cannot and do not because at the end of the day we accept it.

Its response to the tragic shooting in Las Vegas that left at least 58 dead and more than 400 injured was no exception.
Overnight, The Gateway Pundit published this completely fictitious claim:

The piece, which has since been taken down, also misidentified the shooter as “Geary Danley.” According to Las Vegas police, the shooter who carried out the worst mass shooting in modern American history, is Stephen Paddock.
The Gateway Pundit’s fictitious claim first started circulating on fringe sites hours after the gun rampage.
“At least six 4chan threads were pushing the fake story that Danley and his family were ‘dangerous leftists’ early Monday morning,” ThinkProgress reported. “As of 8:45 a.m., most of the threads have stopped pushing the Danley narrative, but the fake news made its way to Twitter, as well.”
Gateway Pundit, a white nationalist outlet, regularly publishes false information. Earlier this year, the site’s White House reporter defended Gateway Pundit’s awful track record this way: “That is the state of new media. When you are trying to get new information out there as quickly as possible, occasionally you’ll get something wrong and have to fix it. That’s how media works right now.”
But of course Gateway Pundit doesn’t “fix” its fabrications.
