Rachel Brand, the number three official at the Justice Department and the woman who would replace Rod Rosenstein if Trump fires him, has resigned.

Courtesy of the New York Times:

Rachel L. Brand, the No. 3 official at the Justice Department, plans to step down after nine months on the job as the country’s top law enforcement agency has been under attack by President Trump, according to two people briefed on her decision.

Ms. Brand’s profile had risen in part because she is next in the line of succession behind the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, who is overseeing the special counsel’s inquiry into Russian influence in the 2016 election. Mr. Trump, who has called the investigation a witch hunt, has considered firing Mr. Rosenstein.

Such a move could have put her in charge of the special counsel and, by extension, left her in the cross hairs of the president.

Ms. Brand, who became the associate attorney general in May 2017, is leaving for a job as general counsel in the private sector. She has held politically appointed positions at the Justice Department over the past three presidential administrations.

In her current job, she reports directly to Mr. Rosenstein and Jeff Sessions, the attorney general, who has recused himself from the Russia investigation.

One has to wonder if Brand saw some writing on the wall, or if she simply finds working in the Justice Department under Donald Trump too toxic.

Brand is considered a consummate professional, and somebody who people felt could not be bullied by Trump to fire Robert Mueller, or be convinced to impede his investigation.

With her gone, and soon to be replaced with somebody of Trump's choosing, Rod Rosenstein could almost certainly find his job on the chopping block, as Trump moves to further obstruct the Russian investigation.

I think it is too early to assert that this will definitely be what happens, but I would not be at all surprised if we suddenly saw Trump attacking Rosenstein more vociferously on Twitter.

The equation has changed yet again. Up to now, the math has been that if Donald Trump ever did fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, control of the Trump-Russia investigation would fall into the hands of the No. 3 at the Department of Justice, Rachel Brand. However, Brand announced today that she’s resigning. So what does this mean for the investigation, and why is she really quitting?

...So does the resignation of Rachel Brand put Donald Trump any closer to being able to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller? Probably not. Keep in mind that if Trump had gone on a Saturday Night Massacre and fired Rod Rosenstein in an attempt at getting to Mueller, he could have just fired Brand as well. So her departure doesn’t necessarily change anything. Of course cable news will tell you that Brand’s departure means Trump will fire Mueller any minute. But cable news spent all of December insisting that Trump was about to fire Mueller, and of course that was just a baseless ratings grab during a slow news month. Don’t read too much into Brand’s departure. Not yet.

I dunno, I suspect Drumph may have been quietly pressuring her to get out so he can put someone loyal to him in place and remove Rosenstein at his leisure later.

(THREAD) BREAKING: The just-released "Navalny Tape" gets us *much* closer to seeing the whole of the Trump-Russia coordination narrative. In this thread I explain how a dozen Trump aides fit into the narrative—with Manafort and Papadopoulos as the stars. Hope you'll pass this on.

'J.D. Gordon made some trips to Hungary—the HQ of Russian intelligence in Europe—that people find suspicious, and may have been present for some Sessions-Kislyak meetings, but mostly his role was being ordered by Trump to change the RNC platform to benefit Putin and doing it.'

'Corey Lewandowski was, by his own admission, "functionally not in control" of the Trump campaign beginning April 7, though he was nominally campaign manager until May 19. His role was doing nothing to stop—and possibly encouraging—key Trump-Russia (Page/Papadopoulos) contacts.'

“My mind was blown by how little he knew about the process,” Walter Shaub says of W.H. Counsel Don McGahn. “I’ve never met an attorney less equipped for the job he was about to undertake. How could he know as little as he knew and be taking this on?”

Probably Vlad has threatened not only Trumpski's life but Trumpski's spawn and grandspawn's lives. Too bad, Dumbass. Until Vlad starts pumping gas and oil the way he wants to without sanctions, you are his OrangeBitch. But the big wheel is going to get you no matter who you fire.

"That intelligence, the New York Times reported Friday evening, included an unverified “15-second clip of a video showing a man in a room talking to two women,” purported to be Trump with two prostitutes in Moscow in 2013. That promised intelligence incident appears to be related to a salacious detail found within the controversial Fusion GPS dossier, which alleged Trump paid two prostitutes to urinate on a bed at the Moscow Ritz-Carlton hotel that former President Barack Obama once slept in.

American intelligence officials who spoke with the Times insisted they paid the $100,000 to the Russian operative to get back stolen NSA cyberweapons and were not seeking the supposedly damaging intelligence. The payment was a first installment of the operative’s $1 million demand, and intelligence officials “cut off the deal because they were wary of being entangled in a Russian operation to create discord inside the American government.”"
" “claimed the information would link the president and his associates to Russia.” He never provided the NSA hacking weapons, and instead “produced unverified and possibly fabricated information” about Trump that included “bank records, emails and purported Russian intelligence data.”"

Drumpf's primary strategy is now perfectly clear and it's LITERALLY engraved on the Drumpf family crest that goes all the way to the early 1950s:

Be shitty in every possible way so that no one notices when your shitty in a way that significantly benefits you.

(Yes, the Drumpf family crest uses the wrong form of you're/your. They weren't stable geniuses back then, either)

"It is true Trump’s family surname was originally “Drumpf,” but the exact timing of the name change still isn’t clear. Biographer Gwenda Blair appeared to have traced the switch to “Trump” to the 1600s, but she later said that “Friedrich Drumpf” emigrated to the United States in 1885, a statement that appeared to contradict her prior writing."

    2. That family crest doesn't go back that far. Trump hijacked it in 1985 when he bought Mar-A-Lago. He replaced the original motto "Integritas" with "Trump" because we all know Trump has no integrity.

He stole the crest like he stole so much during his life. Plagiarism. I said it before and I'll say it again. Trump wrote Melania's speech, or I should say dictated it, for her. He is the plagiarist. He's done it all his life. Once a thief. If you cheat at golf you'll cheat in business. And all his golf buddies know he cheats.
