As the Robert Mueller Russia probe moves forward Donald Trump's legal team is in tatters.

Jay Sekulow
Courtesy of the New York Times:

As President Trump heads into one of the most critical phases of the special counsel’s investigation, his personal legal team has shrunk to essentially just one member, and he is struggling to find any top lawyers willing to represent him.

Working for a president is usually seen as a dream job. But leading white-collar lawyers in Washington and New York have repeatedly spurned overtures to take over the defense of Mr. Trump, a mercurial client who often ignores his advisers’ guidance. In some cases, lawyers’ firms have blocked any talks, fearing a backlash that would hurt business.

The president lost two lawyers in just the past four days, including one who had been on board for less than a week.

That one remaining lawyer is Jay Sekulow who is essentially a legal spokesperson more than a lawyer at this point, and is wholly unqualified to handle such a complicated and important case.

However Trump's attempts to hire more legal muscle is simply not working out too well.

Courtesy of the Daily Beast:

Two more high-power attorneys have had to turn down President Donald Trump. Tom Buchanan and Dan Webb confirmed to The Daily Beast that Trump reached out to them about representing him, and that they couldn’t do it.

“President Trump reached out to Dan Webb and Tom Buchanan to provide legal representation,” they said in a statement. “They were unable to take on the representation due to business conflicts. However they consider the opportunity to represent the President to be the highest honor and they sincerely regret that they cannot do so. They wish the president the best and believe he has excellent representation in Ty Cobb and Jay Sekulow.”

Actually Ty Cobb's work to produce legal documentation for the Mueller team is essentially finished and there are questions concerning his ability, or his desire to continue to help defend Trump as the walls start closing in.

Remember it was Cobb who said that this investigation would have ended by Thanksgiving 2016.

I actually think that at some point Trump will find a lawyer or two to defend him in this Russia case, but they will likely be one step up from ambulance chasers who will be quickly ground to dust by Mueller's top notch legal eagles.

WH Insists Trump Has ‘Highly Qualified’ Legal Team As Lawyers Say No To Prez

...During a press briefing Tuesday, the Washington Post’s Philip Rucker asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders about the “number of high-profile lawyers” who have declined Trump’s offers to join his legal team, naming Dan Webb and Ted Olson, the former solicitor general, as well as unnamed “others.”

“I’m wondering why the President has had so much trouble finding an experienced lawyer willing to take him on?” Rucker asked. “And who at this hour is his lead counsel in negotiating with Robert Mueller and the special counsel’s [office]?”

“The President has a highly qualified team with several individuals that have been part of this process,” Sanders responded, naming Ty Cobb and Jay Sekulow.

“For specific details on any search process outside of the White House, I would refer you to his outside counsel.”

Rucker pointed out that Ty Cobb works for the White House, rather than for Trump personally. John Dowd recently resigned as Trump’s top personal lawyer taking on the Russia probe.

“Outside of the White House, I would refer you to Jay Sekulow, who can address any detailed questions on that front,” Sanders said.

For whatever reason, Donald Trump has been smart enough to put his other Trump-Russia attorney, Jay Sekulow, on his personal payroll, so they have attorney-client privilege. The trouble: Sekulow appears to be an idiot. He famously appeared on Trump-friendly Fox News and turned in such an embarrassing performance that host Chris Wallace was left muttering “Oh boy this is weird.” Ty Cobb isn’t necessarily any better at this, as he once blabbed about Trump’s secrets at a restaurant within earshot of a reporter. And even though John Dowd was probably Trump’s best attorney before he quit, he’s nutty enough that he’s advocated for seceding from the union.

    1. Sekulow is an example of what happens when you hire a civil lawyer to do criminal law.

"Sekulow built a legal and media empire over a thirty-year period by representing conservative, religious and anti-abortion groups."

He also worked for the IRS doing tax litigation.

Sekulow is a litigator. He sues people. He doesn't do criminal law and so is way out of his element regarding the Mueller investigation. Not that Trump would listen to him or take any advice.

He's also a TV lawyer-commentator so once again, Trump is doing his Apprentice schtick.

Two more attorneys turn down Trump

A pair of veteran white-collar lawyers have turned down President Donald Trump’s offer to help lead his defense in the Russia probe, marking another setback for a legal team that’s seen its numbers dwindle over the past week while it prepares for a potentially critical interview between the president and special counsel Robert Mueller.

The law firm Winston & Strawn said Monday night that two of its partners — former federal prosecutors Tom Buchanan and Dan Webb — were approached by Trump but declined the job “due to business conflicts.”

Poll: Americans believe women over Trump on affair allegations

A majority of Americans believe the women who have alleged affairs with Donald Trump rather than the president’s denials, according to a poll released on Monday.

Sixty-three percent of those surveyed in the CNN poll say they believe the women who have come forward with the allegations of extramarital affairs with Trump, while 21 percent say they believe the president and 16 percent say they have no opinion on the matter.

The survey found that, overall, Republicans were more likely to trust in Trump’s denials instead of the women, 41 percent to 31 percent, and that women put more faith in the allegations over the president, 70 percent to 54 percent.

Buttigieg Gets Closer to a 2020 Campaign
The South Bend mayor has a PAC spending money in Iowa, is staffing up with presidential campaign vets and quietly building key relationships ahead of 2020.

Pete Buttigieg’s PAC is investing money here—but also in Georgia, Arizona, Michigan and Colorado. And Iowa, per an announcement coming Tuesday. Next month, he’ll campaign in Ohio.

    It’s not happenstance.

...Buttigieg, 36, is getting closer to a presidential race. And serious people are telling the South Bend, Indiana, mayor, who’d be the first major presidential candidate who’s openly gay, an Afghanistan veteran or a millennial, to take it seriously.

As he enables the Russian attack on our election, the Speaker of the House said on Tuesday in the Czech Republic that the U.S. and its allies should condemn Russia for meddling in elections and launching cyber attacks.

...This is the same Speaker Ryan who in February fired, or “went in another direction” by not renewing his contract, Matthew Masterson, the head of a federal commission whose job involves protecting our election systems from cyber attacks by Russia, which have been identified as vulnerable to attack in the upcoming midterms. Ryan did this on his own whim and that of President Trump’s.

...Ryan has said he doesn’t believe it’s necessary to pass legislation to protect Mueller’s Russia probe, even as the President has gone on a firing rampage of stunningly brazen proportions that shame even disgraced former President Nixon.

This is the same Speaker who praised Devin Nunes’ investigation into a transition team he participated in. An investigation that was used to do anything but actually investigate Trump Russia ties/collusion.

The NRA Admits That They Are Taking Russian Cash

...What is a supposedly pro-US/pro-Second Amendment organization doing taking foreign money?
Notice that the NRA tried to dodge the R-word. They don’t want to say Russia, but the organization has received millions of dollars from a Putin ally and is currently under investigation by the FBI for laundering money from Russia and giving to the Trump campaign.

The NRA’s answer only inspires more questions. Who are they getting their money from? Which foreign individuals and governments are donating to them? (Hint: It is Russians.)

The NRA has had a nice scam going for decades. They pretend to be a membership organization, but they are the lobbying arm of the gun industry. They wrap themselves in the flag and the Second Amendment while taking cash from foreign individuals. No one should believe the NRA’s denials that the Russian cash didn’t make into election funds for a single moment.

  16. "Lawyers and legal experts say it’s not hard to see why: Lawyers could place themselves at great risk by working for a client with a reputation for impulsiveness and an inability to heed advice, who tends to undercut legal strategy with haphazard public statements and an itchy Twitter finger and who, as a result, may not be worth the publicity and likely future business associated with representing a president of the United States.

“One of the things you always wonder about when you’re asked to replace another lawyer is ‘Why?’” said George Clark, a Washington, D.C.-based attorney specializing in legal ethics.

Clark noted that many lawyers endure guilty or ethically challenged clients ― the right to legal counsel being something attorneys strive to uphold ― but erratic clients are a whole different can of worms. Refusing to take advice from counsel, for example, is a common reason why lawyers drop clients."

"Jed Shugerman, a law professor at Fordham University, said that representing Trump in the Mueller probe could also threaten one’s professional reputation and may even put one in legal jeopardy."

"“It is difficult for one to maintain one’s appearance of being an ethical lawyer while trying to represent Donald Trump,” Shugerman said. “Any lawyer who has observed those episodes is going to see that joining this team at this stage runs a risk to their professional lives.”"

"The Donald Trump TV Show and Presidency, accustomed to hogging the nation’s attention, may be facing its greatest threat yet from a brand new series: The Porn Star and Her Lawyer.

In mere weeks, Stormy Daniels (whose real name is Stephanie Clifford) and her California-based trial attorney have taken her tale of 2016 hush money to hide an affair with the soon-to-be president from a gossip magazine to the heights of serious journalism ― and forced Trump to shift from simply denying it all to getting personally involved in litigation.

And at every stop along the way, Michael Avenatti has been amazed at how Trump’s lawyers have reacted by escalating the situation rather than tamping it down.

“From moment one, we’ve been playing three-dimensional chess, and they’ve been playing tic-tac-toe,” Avenatti told HuffPost on Monday. “And they haven’t even been playing that well.”"

"“Over the course of my 18-year career, I have been honored to litigate against some of the best, most strategic lawyers in the nation,” he said Monday. “This thus far does not fall into that category.”"

"“We haven’t created a reality TV script,” he said. “I am doing what I do, and that is proceeding in a methodical, strategic and surgical manner.”"

Gee. Sounds a lot like Mueller.

Why hasn't Trump burst an aneurism yet?

  18. Oh, and Trump's administration is being taken to court again. This time by California (again) over the Census.

It wasn't enough that they've choked the Census almost to death by cutting funding and personnel. Now they're going to add a citizenship question.

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/california-sues-trump-administration-over-census-citizenship-question_us_5aba4557e4b0decad04e2645

"California quickly filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after the Commerce Department announced that the 2020 census would ask people whether they were U.S. citizens.

The citizenship question, announced Monday night, will discourage people from responding to the census and will violate the Constitution’s mandate for “actual enumeration,” the state’s lawsuit argues, according to The Washington Post.

“The Census numbers provide the backbone for planning how our communities can grow and thrive in the coming decade,” California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement. “What the Trump administration is requesting is not just alarming, it is an unconstitutional attempt to discourage an accurate Census count.”

The census hasn’t included a question about citizenship since 1950. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the question would allow better enforcement of voting laws.

Adding a citizenship question is likely to make people more wary of filling out the survey, causing undercounts ― especially in communities with large immigrant populations, HuffPost and The Washington Post have previously reported. An undercount could cost states like California seats in Congress, federal funding based on population and electoral college votes in presidential elections. "

"“It is long settled that all persons residing in the United States — citizens and non-citizens alike — must be counted to fulfill the Constitution’s ‘actual Enumeration’ mandate,” California’s lawsuit states. "

California is already suing over our open space, protected lands and I believe also regarding off shore drilling. So just add this one to the pile.

Gee, all this winning it's a wonder Trump gets anything done.

Wonder how that "winning" is going over transgenders in the military and his immigration ban. Has he won his wall yet?
