Facebook stocks plunge as the FTC launches investigation into data sharing practices. Update!

Courtesy of NBC News:

Shares of Facebook cratered as much as 6 percent Monday after the Federal Trade Commission announced it is investigating the company's data practices in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica leak of 50 million users' information.

"The FTC takes very seriously recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook. Today, the FTC is confirming that it has an open non-public investigation into these practices," the agency said in a statement.

The FTC declined to confirm last week that it was investigating Facebook, including whether it violated a consent decree the tech company signed with the agency in 2011.

The decree required that Facebook notify users and receive explicit permission before sharing personal data beyond their specified privacy settings.

A violation of the consent decree could carry a penalty of $40,000 per violation.

Well we all know that they certainly violated that consent decree, and at $40,000 a pop that might well bankrupt Facebook.

But before you feel too bad for this multi billion dollar company, perhaps you ought to read this article from a guy who found out that Facebook had collected every phone number in his contact list:

This is not the most startling example of Facebook's data collection. At least one user has reported that all of his text messages from an Android phone have somehow ended up being stored by Mark Zuckerberg's company.

Even if Facebook users agree to share this data, their friends whose numbers or text messages are being collected almost certainly have not. And even if those people have never joined Facebook - or have decided to delete their accounts - it looks as though some of their data will stay with the social network as long as the people who provided it remain.

And if you are now wondering how that kind of data could be misused, well this next article gives a pretty good example.

Courtesy of Fortune:

Cambridge Analytica isn’t the only entity using Facebook data for its own ends.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has relied on Facebook data to find and track immigrants suspected of being in the U.S. illegally, according to a new report by The Intercept.

The report tells of one instance in which ICE used backend Facebook data to determine when the account of the person in question was accessed, as well as the IP addresses corresponding to each login. The agents reportedly combined this data with other routinely used records, such as phone records, to pinpoint his location.

This is all perfectly legal, and of course most of us are probably okay with law enforcement using these techniques to catch the bad guys, but under the Trump Administration the label "bad guys" could now pertain to people who just a year ago were considered upstanding members of the community.

Update: Zuckerberg has now agreed to testify before Congress.

I hope they hold his damn feet to the fire.

I just love that there are conspiracy theorist worried that the government is collecting data on them, but they have no worries about giving out all their info to facebook and others.

I even questioned storing data on "the cloud", the reality is the company that owns "the cloud" owns your data, photos etc.

So think twice about storing stuff on a companies server ie "the cloud", better to buy a backup hard drive and put the extra stuff there.

The people who installed the app and took the quiz probably won't have a lot of recourse, but the 50 million people on their Friend List should never have had their information taken.

Hope they sue for defamation of character, I am sure there are plenty of attorneys that would represent them pro bono.

    2. Alex Jones is already being sued for defamation. Maybe he thinks he can get a discount defending multiple defamation lawsuits.

The great facebook experiment failed. And this failure will cost billions and zillions. The damages extend beyond 50 million. 50 million and at least 500 million friends and family contacts were hit. Old ugly bannon had a field day hacking and attacking innocent unknowing people, businesses etc. Every single one of the assholes will pay for the damages.

See, this is why I believe we humans are an alien reality show and they bet on how long it takes between falls of our civilizations. Maybe we are superior beings who assume human characters and we signed up for this?

Don't forget the religious right. Their holier than thou giving Donald John Trump "cheap grace" is way too much. It just shows everyone what cheap liars they are hiding behind their fake religion. They should not have exempt tax status and they should not be a part of the politic process with their fake religion. There is nothing in the bible that condones the likes of don john trump. nothing.

  9. Not just Facebook but the stock market in general is tanking.

I only have a small portfolio, about $27,000 in stocks. But mine is down $1,300 today.

If you've got a 401k it sucks. If you have a pension it sucks because they invest money in the stock market (thanks to the Republicans.)

Those actually educated in such things (rather than TV pundits) predicted that Obama's economy would last about 12-18 months, then we'd be living on Trump's economy. And here it is, right on schedule. 14 months and Trump's behavior and policies are having their effect.

You must be in rather risky investments if you lost that high a percentage in just one day.

Perhaps move into long term less risky investments to weather this "Trump storm"?

One thing to consider now, as crazy as it seems, is marijuana funds as it is legal in so many states now.

I've been in a fund for a while and it doesn't seem to be affected by market trends. I also hold a lot of Apple stock, purchased a lot of it in 1998 but even though it is expensive now it tends to be solid.

      Delete
    2. Nope. At the time they were purchased they were considered solid. And it wasn't lost in a day. That's how much my portfolio has lost in value since this downturn, so in the last few months. The only reason $27,000 is the point of value is that's what it was worth when I transferred it over from Morgan Chase to Schwab.

G.E., Mattel. Thankfully I sold Wells Fargo before that hit the fan. ATT, Verizon, Bank of America, Glasxo Smith Kline, Target.

I don't own more than 50 - 100 shares in any one company. Spread over maybe 12-16 stocks.

It was supposed to be bigger but when I was teaching my pay was not only frozen but reduced so the last 6 years of my career I didn't have a chance to put anything in. I think I only contributed about $16,000 overall, so it did increase in value.

I don't really do anything with it. I have sold a few stocks and bought others. I wait until the dividends add up, then buy some more. I don't have to take money out when I turn 72 so it can just stay there forever or until I want to cash it all out and take a trip or something.

It's like a hobby, but it does allow me to see what is going on with the economy.

There are certain things I will not invest in. Facebook and it's ilk being one. They produce no tangible goods and their services are questionable. We're seeing just how fragile they are as a business.

How many people today even remember that show? I doubt it will be the "revival" they think it is. I remember being a kid and turning the channel when it came on and throughout time a lot of folks seem not to like her so can't imagine it will get any ratings. Also too, who is watching anything network these days when we have content galore from so many other outlets?

      Delete
    2. I never watched it when it was originally on. I hated the negativity. The family would just insult each other and the only time they banded together to support each other was when they were ganging up to attack an outsider.

I just don't find parents and children insulting and disrespecting each other funny, no matter the punchline. I thought it had a negative effect on society as I noticed students talking back and acting up to their teachers increased over the years that show was on.

You can always turn it off or switch the channel. I haven't watched prime time network TV in years. That they're regurgitating old shows is no surprise to me. Grasping at straws?

Where I do respect the concern and outrage of folks just getting this, I would like to share that I've taken a bit of delight in the FB fail. It is exactly this type of concern that kept me from EVER opening an account with them or other such platforms in the first place. Curious, and at times furious how this all will come-out. Good luck to us all! And for the trolls-yeah there is a lot of stuff out there on me-but I don't have to give it willingly.

I find it quite funny, myself. Didn't Zuckerberg cheat his fellow dorm room creators out of their share to make it his own?

So cool, he joined the stock market. THAT is when I laughed because, anyone that knows anything about it, he ended up HERE.

"a Palantir employee in London worked closely with data scientists at Cambridge Analytica to build a new technology app that did psychological profiling. The Palantir employee told the Cambridge Analytica people they could create their own app to (ILLEGALly) gain access to the friend networks of Facebook users. They followed up on this suggestion and, working with Palantir, built a a mobile-phone-based personality quiz that was wildly successful in helping them gain illicit access to Facebook data."
