For those of you with a longer memory you might remember late last year when Jared Kushner said this:
Donald Trump's campaign struck a deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group during the campaign to try and secure better media coverage, his son-in-law Jared Kushner told business executives Friday in Manhattan.
Kushner said the agreement with Sinclair, which owns television stations across the country in many swing states and often packages news for their affiliates to run, gave them more access to Trump and the campaign, according to six people who heard his remarks.
In exchange, Sinclair would broadcast their Trump interviews across the country without commentary, Kushner said. Kushner highlighted that Sinclair, in states like Ohio, reaches a much wider audience — around 250,000 listeners — than networks like CNN, which reach somewhere around 30,000.
“It’s math,” Kushner said according to multiple attendees.
Dammit! I have always worried that at some point the conservatives might figure out math.
You almost have to admire how openly Donald Trump and his people discuss, and even brag, about their new propaganda machine.

I’ll bet that deal was to make sure the FCC allowed Sinclair to buy Tribune Media, in which case they would control 72%.

That propaganda from Sinclair was on the news last night, on the radio today, John Oliver reported on it, it’s been on Yahoo News. There is no keeping a secret that Sinclair is ordering their stations to broadcast scripted propaganda.
Now, I’m waiting for someone to take Sinclair’s announcment and point the finger at FOX NEWS for being the fake news they are referring to. Except for those stations giving their little speeches that ARE Fox. In which case you can just dismiss it as more Fox lying bullshit, not different than all their other biased bullshit.
It’s the Tribune buy that needs close scrutiny. Hopefully the light shed on this manipulation of the public will help to put a stop to Sinclair’s takeover bid.

These people are tranced in absolutes. Absolutes do not reflect the way things really are, nor truth about the human condition. Making the "seeing transition" from certainty to impermanence is the essential problem.
ReplyDeleteOne of my local anchors who appeared in that Sinclair video that went viral was on the radio this morning, talking about his experience. He choked up as he explained how he and his colleagues were forced to read the statement under threat of losing their jobs.
ReplyDeleteThe other anchor who appeared in the same clip with him has posted a statement on her Facebook page, with comments that were very similar to his. Both of them are being vilified by people for not having the courage to quit their jobs rather than read the statements.
However, with the reach that Sinclair now has, and the even greater reach they will have if allowed to merge with Tribune, where are these broadcasters supposed to go? The opportunities locally are extremely limited and they have families who are settled in this city with spouses who have their own careers. In the case of the two local anchors, they have been working in broadcast news for 35 and 22 years in a business that places heavy value on youth and appearance. An older anchor may find it difficult to get a job at a station where their reputation is less valued than how they look on camera.
Our anger should be directed at Sinclair and the FCC for allowing this media takeover to occur, NOT at the anchors whose livelihoods are being threatened if they refuse too cooperate.
John Oliver did a brief expose of that horrible clip on his most recent show. It ended with a montage of announcers all spewing forth the same words simultaneously. Really creepy and frightening.
