Ricky Gervais gives greatest answer ever concerning the existence of god.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

“I know that you’re an atheist,” Colbert began during Wednesday’s episode of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Do you want to debate the existence of god?”

After Gervais signaled he was up for the challenge, Colbert asked his fellow comedian, “Why is there something instead of nothing, why does the universe exist at all?”

Gervais protested the premise of Colbert’s question, insisting the argument for religion isn’t over why the universe exists, but how. He explained that he’s “agnostic atheist,” meaning while he doesn’t know for sure whether there is a god, he doesn’t think anything outside “science and nature” created the universe.

“Atheism isn’t a belief system,” Gervais said, arguing it is “only rejecting the claim there’s a god.”

“You don’t believe in 2,999 gods,” Gervais added. “And I don’t believe in just one more.”

This has become my go to response to the question about god, except that I now say that there are actually over 100,000, and then suggest the insanity in simply accepting the existence of only one while rejecting so many thousands that don't meet your simple standards.

Which are typically that you have never heard of them, or that the argument for their existence has not been drummed into your head since birth.

Later in the conversation Gervais added his about science:

"Science is constantly proved all the time. If we take something like any fiction, any holy book, and destroyed it, in a thousand years’ time that wouldn’t come back just as it was. Whereas if we took every science book and every fact and destroyed them all, in a thousand years they’d all be back, because all the same tests would be the same result.”

Yes, this....so much of this.

He has a point.

A non-belief in gods is our natural state.

It is only through aggressive proselytizing that we are convinced that the supernatural is natural.

It isn't.

Still my favorite response to why I'm an Atheist.

It is also why I don't call myself an agnostic.

The next time a religious person asks you why you don't call yourself an agnostic, since you can't prove there is no God, instead of an Atheist. Simply ask them if they are an agnostic or an atheist concerning Thor, or Zeus, or Ra, or any other among the pantheon of Gods not worshiped by their particular religion.

That's usually the end of the conversation.

Ricky Gervais on Atheists: "We have nothing to die for. We have everything to live for.”

Courtesy of Mediaiate:

Morgan congratulated Gervais on being “thinner than ever,” and even showed before and after photos to prove his point. A conversation on health quickly turned to religion. “You’re a pathological atheist,” Morgan said, “and so the thought of death is very final for you.”

“For me it’s the end of something glorious, so I have to pack it all in,” Gervais explained. “But, you know, I’m not depressed about it. I don’t want to die any more than anyone else, and I think it’s a strange myth that atheists have nothing to live for. It’s the opposite. We have nothing to die for. We have everything to live for.”

He said one of the things that annoys him the most is “religious intolerance, this arrogance, arguing over who’s God is right.” He contrasted “spirituality, a personal feeling, journey, hope” with religion, which is an organized body that uses that for power and corporation.”

"I don’t want to die any more than anyone else, and I think it’s a strange myth that atheists have nothing to live for. It’s the opposite. We have nothing to die for."

Can I tell you how much I LOVE that quote?

I don't always agree with everything Ricky Gervais has to to say, but that is a almost perfect sentiment in my opinion.

Here is the video of the interview:

Just a suggestion, but if you are going to attack a scientist for being an Atheist, you might want to get your scientists straight first.

Personally I am troubled that Richard Dawkins seems to have absconded with Stephen Hawking's wheelchair as well as his computer based communication system.

That seems unnecessarily rude to me.

P.S. By the way Ricky Gervais loves to rattle the cages of some of his more ignorant critics on Twitter and often retweets some of the most ridiculous things you have ever heard. This one was particularly funny.

Now for something completely different. Ricky Gervais and Thandie Newton read from Sarah Palin porn script

I LOVED this, and think that from now on Thandie Newton should always stand in for Sarah Palin in her appearances.  She is much prettier, and smarter, and her Palin accent is not NEARLY as grating as the real thing.

Besides you have to admit she is MUCH easier to listen to than the Grizzled Mama was yesterday on the Today Show!

And didn't Ricky Gervais do a spot on imitation of Brad Hanson?

Actually I have NO idea what Hanson sounds like so he could very well HAVE a cockney accent for all I know.
