Tom Steyer, the Democratic hedge fund manager-turned-activist, won’t run for either senator or governor of California in 2018, instead investing $30 million in an effort to flip the House, he told reporters on Monday. 

“My fight is not just in California, my fight is in removing Donald Trump from office, and from power,” said Steyer, whose announcement won’t dispel speculation that he might run for president in 2020. 

Steyer plans to use his NextGen America political group to juice millennial voting numbers in 10 states, he said. He singled out House Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.), Reps. Darrell Issa (Calif.), and Barbara Comstock (Va.) as targets. 

The billionaire has been the biggest donor to Democrats in recent election cycles, to the tune of nearly $200 million. His national stature has grown recently with a series of straight-to-camera ads, calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. 

I think it is best that Steyer refuse to be seduced by calls for him to run for office, as he is definitely more effective as an activist and political donor.

I'm just glad this guy is on our side.

Russian trolls paid actual American activists to help fund protests during 2016 election cycle.

On Tuesday, the newspaper RBC published a major investigation into the work of a so-called Russian “troll factory” since 2015, including during the period of the US election campaign, disclosures that are likely to put further spotlight on alleged Russian meddling in the election. 

The existence of the troll factory, which has a history of spamming Russian and English blogs and comment forums, has been reported on by many outlets including the Guardian, but the RBC investigation is the first in-detail look at the organisation’s activity during the election period. 

RBC said it had identified 118 accounts or groups in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter that were linked to the troll factory, all of which had been blocked in August and September this year as part of the US investigation into Russian electoral meddling. 

Many of the accounts had already been linked to Russian disinformation efforts in western outlets, but RBC said its sources at the troll factory had provided screenshots of the internal group administration pages of some of the groups, as proof they were run from Russia. It also spoke to former and current employees of the troll factory, all of whom spoke anonymously. 

Perhaps the most alarming element of the article was the claim that employees of the troll factory had contacted about 100 real US-based activists to help with the organisation of protests and events. RBC claimed the activists were contacted by Facebook group administrators hiding their Russian origin and were offered financial help to pay for transport or printing costs. About $80,000 was spent during a two-year period, according to the report.

So another $80,000?

Oh but that is not all. Not by a long shot.

A social media campaign calling itself "Blacktivist" and linked to the Russian government used both Facebook and Twitter in an apparent attempt to amplify racial tensions during the U.S. presidential election, two sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN. The Twitter account has been handed over to Congress; the Facebook account is expected to be handed over in the coming days. 

Both Blacktivist accounts, each of which used the handle Blacktivists, regularly shared content intended to stoke outrage. "Black people should wake up as soon as possible," one post on the Twitter account read. "Black families are divided and destroyed by mass incarceration and death of black men," another read. The accounts also posted videos of police violence against African Americans. 

And then there is this:

A group linked to the Russian troll farm behind thousands of fake Facebook ads paid personal trainers in New York, Florida, and other parts of the United States to run self-defense classes for African Americans in an apparent attempt to stoke fear and gather contact details of Americans potentially susceptible to their propaganda. 

"Be ready to protect your rights... Let them know that black power matters," the group, known as Black Fist, wrote on its website promoting the events. 

The group appears to have been set up in January 2017, and it ran events before stopping at some point this year, evidence that Russia's attempts to use social media to meddle in American affairs have extended far beyond the 2016 presidential election. 

The events, which appear to have been designed to suggest a connection to the Black Lives Matter movement, were -- unbeknownst to the trainers who led them -- likely conceived by the Russian government-linked Internet Research Agency. 

Seriously?

At this point nobody could possibly say that the Russian government was not all in to help Donald Trump get elected.

And you simply do not put this much effort into something unless you are getting a substantial, guaranteed, benefit.

The anti-abortion activist behind the videos accusing Planned Parenthood of selling “baby parts,” as he put it, could be going to prison. And now his criminal defense lawyers could join him. 

Late last month, David Daleiden and his team of criminal attorneys allegedly flouted multiple injunctions and court-issued seals by posting more shocking videos of abortion providers and identifying 14 of the John/Jane Does participating in the state criminal complaint against him and his recording partner Sandra Merritt. Those names were previously under a court seal. 

This apparent defiance of court orders may end up landing Daleiden and his criminal attorneys in contempt of both state and federal court, potentially resulting in fines and jail time — and disbarment for the lawyers. 

Daleiden’s work once caused multiple congressional investigations and nearly shut down the government. Two years and multiple lawsuits and legal hurdles later, the 28-year-old and his Planned Parenthood investigation have faded out of the headlines.

That's true, the last I wrote about Daleiden was back in March when California charged him, and one of his assistants, with invasion of privacy.

Now it appears that he is once again on the wrong side of the law:  

A federal court issued a preliminary injunction in a now two-year-old civil lawsuit brought by NAF, blocking Daleiden, his lawyers and any third party from releasing any new footage or names of those filmed until the case is closed. US District Judge William Orrick granted the injunction in February, 2016 in response to NAF’s claims of “death threats and severe harassment” against its employees. After the state of California brought a separate criminal case against Daleiden and Merritt in March of this year, the list of names of those accusing them was placed under a confidential court seal as well. Daleiden and his criminal attorneys published the videos and the list of names anyway. 

And last week, Daleiden’s criminal defense lawyers hired a criminal attorney of their own. That attorney, Vicki Ileen Podberesky, did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this story.

So now this guy's attorneys have have a lawyer of their own?

Now why does that seem so familiar?

And I would not spend five seconds on him if he were not a prime example of the kind of guerilla tactics the Right Wing uses these days and attempts to pass off as "real journalism" while attacking actual established media outlets as "fake news."

Trump appoints an anti-abortion activist, who does not believe that birth control works, to head up a federal family planning program for low income Americans.

Manning, a former lobbyist with the National Right to Life Committee and legislative analyst for the conservative Family Research Council, will serve as deputy assistant secretary for population affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services. The Office of Population Affairs administers the Title X program, which subsidizes contraception, Pap smears and other preventive health care services for 4 million low-income Americans, roughly half of whom are uninsured. 

Manning has said she opposes federal family planning funding, and she has a long history of making false claims about birth control and women’s health. 

“Of course, contraception doesn’t work,” she said in a 2003 NPR interview. “Its efficacy is very low especially when you consider over years, which you know a lot of contraception health advocates want, to start women in their adolescent years when they’re extremely fertile, incidentally. And continue for 10, 20, 30 years, over that span of time the prospect that contraception would always prevent the conception of a child is preposterous.” 

Manning has referred to abortion as “legalized crime” and mistakenly argued that emergency contraception, which can prevent pregnancy for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, is “the destruction of a human life already conceived.” (It’s not.) She has also claimed that the link between abortion and breast cancer is “undisputed,” when there is actually no evidence of a causal relationship between the two. 

Just another example of Trump putting people in charge of programs so that they can undermine them or outright destroy them.

A woman who does not believe in contraception heading a family planning program, it is like an Onion article come to life.

North Korea declares war....on balloons.

North Korea's military on Sunday threatened to blow up balloons that South Korean activists plan to send over the heavily militarised border carrying 10,000 DVDs of the satirical Hollywood film The Interview. 

Activists plan to launch copies of the film - a comedy about a fictional United States Central Intelligence Agency plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - as well as 500,000 propaganda leaflets across the border on or around March 26. 

"All the firepower strike means of the frontline units of the (Korean People's Army) will launch without prior warning... to blow up balloons," the North's frontline military units said in a notice to the South. 

You know I've seen a couple of North Korean weapons tests, and  my money's on the balloons.

I have little doubt that hours after the activists launch their "assault" that there will be thousands of copies of "The Interview" in the hands of the North Koreans.

The only question is how many military fatalities will North Korea suffer as their bullets invariably strike each other or soldiers choke to death on deflated balloons.
