Barack Obama gives some folks in Chicago a thrill simply by showing up for jury duty.

Prospective juror Barack Obama, who ultimately was not chosen to sit on a jury, climbed out of a black SUV in a secure parking garage underneath the Daley Center around 10 a.m. Wednesday as a news helicopter hovered overhead. Then, accompanied by his Secret Service detail, Obama rode a private elevator reserved for judges to the 17th floor, where he was greeted by Chief Judge Timothy Evans. 

He emerged smiling as if in campaign mode, shaking hands as he made his way under the fluorescent lights to the jury assembly room. “This looks like Chicago right here,” Obama said to laughter after surveying the room filled with rows of black plastic chairs, according to one of the jurors who captured it on video. “I like that.”

A security guard at the courthouse warned a gaggle of news photographers, reporters, court staff and attorneys not to photograph the room, but all bets were off once the crowd caught a glimpse of Obama inside. The crowd rushed and pressed against the glass doors as everyone tried to snap a photo. 

“He’s gorgeous!” exclaimed court clerk Sonal Joshi, who briefly came upstairs and caught a glimpse of Obama before rushing back to her post on a lower floor of the building.

Just thought it would be nice to see a reminder of how a real public servant deals with his civic responsibilities. 

Palin finally found somebody dumb enough to believe her jury duty story.

Really? Palin starts jury duty tomorrow? How is that possible when there are no jury trials scheduled for tomorrow?

The first day of the Sarah Palin jury watch passed with this simple recorded message to those called for jury duty: "Your services will not be needed on Friday, June 24.''

Those in the Palmer jury pool, which Palin has indicated include her, are to call back Friday night to find out about "possible service on Monday, June 27.

The former governor lives just up the road from Palmer in the small town of Wasilla, where she was once mayor. Local legal cases, however, are tried at the courthouse in Palmer.

The jury procedure in Alaska is to send jury duty notices to a small army of people. They are given a pool number. If there pool number is called, they are to report to the court house to await possible selection to a jury.

It is rare to get picked, and a half-dozen attorneys queried by Alaska Dispatch said that they would immediately move to waive Palin if she was actually called to sit on a jury.

As one of them put it, no one would want to bring to the courtroom the circus that seems to follow in the wake of the former Alaska governor these days.

Let's face it, she quit!

She was embarrassed by the attention her ridiculous Paul Revere statements attracted, her family abandoned her, and she started to get panicky, so she pulled the plug.

She quit. Her apologists can make up any bullshit excuse they want, but they are not fooling anybody. As we all know, quitting is what she does best, and she proved it for all the world to see yet again.

The jury duty excuse was the only thing she could come up with on the fly and it was essentially her version of "The dog ate my bus tour." Pathetic!

Imagine our surprise when reading media reports today that the “One Nation Tour” has been cancelled. Why didn’t anyone tell me? Oh, wait, that’s because it hasn’t been cancelled. (Good ol’ media… you never cease to amaze!)

As I said myself at the end of the east coast leg of the tour, the summer is long, and I’m looking forward to hitting the open road again. The coming weeks are tight because civic duty calls (like most everyone else, even former governors get called up for jury duty) and I look forward to doing my part just like every other Alaskan.

I wouldn’t think it to be such a slow news day that, what with numerous wars and serious economic woes concerning Americans, a bus is driving news stories today. The next leg of the tour continues when the time comes. In the meantime, no one should jump to conclusions – certainly not the media with their long track record of getting things wrong or just making things up.

Which begs the question, does anybody really want a potential leader of this country who can't even manage to get out of jury duty?
