President Obama: "If I had a son he would look like Trayvon Martin."

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

If you are unfamiliar with the Trayvon Martin story, and I have no real idea how that is possible, here is a timeline to bring you up to speed.

I have often thought to myself how incredibly disappointing the African American community has found the Obama presidency.

No, not because he has not enacted policies that have been helpful to their community, or not followed up on promises that he made during his campaign, or embarrassed them by not being up to the job in any way.

NO I imagine that they have been disappointed because on the day Obama was inaugurated they surely believed they were witnessing the beginning of the end of racism in his country. (After all how can the black man be discriminated against while a representative of his ethnicity occupies the most powerful position in the country?)

But instead they saw the resurgence, and even open acceptance, of racism in response to the 2008 election.  It seemed to be the catalyst for the declaring of an open season on, not only black people, but ALL minorities. Which ultimately evolved to include women of ALL colors.

In some ways this Trayvon Martin case is becoming a pressure valve that is releasing all of the pent up anger and resentment at how the minorities have been treated in this country, even going back to BEFORE Obama first put his feet up on his desk in the Oval Office.

And well it should, for if we cannot start to make inroads into educating Americans about the perils of judging each other by the pigment of our skin while Barack Obama is our President, then will there EVER be any hope of doing away with racism in this country?

    If you watch Fox, you won't know about it. They have mentioned him 94 times, while there are 92 MILLION stories on HuffPo!
    The hatred of Sarah Palin and Fox News and associates has divided this nation more than in the 60's with civil rights. And then Rivera says Trayvon's hoodie caused the shooting? Just like a woman deserved to be raped because she wore high heels. Morons all.
    Bravo to the President for his wise and comforting words, and for staying above the fray, which must be difficult when they lie every time they mention him.

    I am afraid it will not happen in our lifetime. I cannot imagine the outrage Trayvon's parents felt after knowing their son lay on a morgue slab for 3 days before notifying them. And then to learn his killer was not even in jail. Thank goodness they got their story to the media.

    The right wing is going to say some really hateful things about the president's statement.

    President Obama could have said: 'When I was young I looked like Trayvon Martin.'

    2. But,he didn't-and he shouldn't have to,just to appease the no-brain idiots from the other side that will jump on his words. If they find our Presidents' words offensive,tough shit. As a parent,I find NOTHING more heart wrenching and horrible then to have your child murdered. And,if people can't put themselves in the place of Trayvons' parents,and feel empathy,sadness,and a sense of righteousness for justice to be done? Well then,screw them,because they can keep their small minded,hate filled,rabble rousing mouths shut.And I do not mean any disrespect towards you or what you wrote. I believe President Obama spoke the words that every African American can understand-because I think they can all see Trayvon as their son. More's the pity that some people of other colors cannot empathetically put themselves in their place. Our World would be a better place if they could.

      Yes, he could have, but why? What he said was just fine, and heartfelt. The right wing is going to say hateful things no matter what this President says or does. He could say Minnie Mouse is a cartoon character and they would dispute it- and throw in a racist slur just for fun.

      I am so sick of all of this. Thank you MacCain and Palin.

  5. Gryph, the African American community has not been disappointed with Pres. Obama because the community had no expectation that his election marked the end of racism in America. The African American community is realistic about racism, knowing it is ever present. It was brought out in the open by Palin and her ilk. The awesome achievement of Pres. Obama is that he overcame this racism to become the man he is today.

      Agree. I’m an African-American, and I never believed that racism in America, or anywhere was going to end, just Barack Obama was elected president. I don’t think most people of any race thought that. That’s incredibly naïve. As for African-Americans being disappointed in his presidency, that’s not exactly true, either. President Obama is still polling very high amongst African-American voters. In fact, he polls the highest among African-Americans voters. It’s white voters he polls the lowest with.

      I agree on all points. I'm a white woman who voted for President Obama. I stand with Trayvon's parents and all people who are outraged that this armed killer is free.
      I'm not naive either, but I DO hold those who promote hate speech and hide behind facebook and the first amendment, then dare call themselves "Real Americans"

      Justice delayed is justice denied.

    4. So do you have any sense that having this issue become so overt will be beneficial in the long run to the African American community? Or will it bring back worse conditions? Or maybe I should ask if you experience a difference yourself already?

      I was certainly not surprised by the upsurge in outright racism. It's always been there but more hidden. I am a white woman but I worked on a job that exposed me to the really vile racist undercurrent in this country. I arranged interracial adoptions in the late 1960s. I was horrified by some of the responses to those innocent kids. What I saw when we elected Barack Obama seemed to me so familiar. But, it is just so OUT THERE now. I think many who were not on the receiving end of such nastiness did not realize those attitudes still exist. The expression of those attitudes just had been suppressed. Many of our younger generations seem not to see race as an issue now. Interracial relationships seem more commonplace. Sympathetic folks here seem to be totally shocked at this vile outbreak of hate. Maybe more eyes are opened to the reality now? Will people of good will realize much more needs to be done and be moved to do it?

      I would be interested to hear what you feel on this subject. Will this/will this be making things for African Americans better or worse? Or do you have any sense where this is going to go? I know you cannot predict the future but wondered if you feel differently about where we are now in relation to race relations.

    This saddens me beyond words. I can't understand the hatred that seems to be running rampant throughout this country. The pure ignorance is appalling to me and yet I feel helpless. When I try to speak the truth I am met with evil and am told they wish I were dead. Why? What kind of country do they think this would be if it were led by their ignorance and hatred?

    I've seen comments in many blogs about the silence of the FOX channel, with regard to this terrible incident.

    I figured they were trying desperately to come up with some sort of SPIN with which they could defuse the bright light being shone on the UGLY of the rightwing extremist position it revealed.

    So, just now, I see the wise sage Geraldo Rivera has broken the silence with his stand that the wearing of the HOODIE was the cause of it all.

      And the ONLY reason Santorum replied with caution or dignity is because he, too, is now followed by the Secret Service, and knew he could get in trouble if he openly agreed with her.

      Second reason, IMO: a huge wood-shedding of the far righties this past week by Rove and the Jebster, telling them they must now 'pretend' to behave like grown-ups so they will stop driving independent and moderate votes away from the repugs and into Obama's camp. Rove and the Jebster (and their backers) are very afraid that these loonies will permanently destroy the republican party – in which case there might not be anything left for the 1% to loot anymore. Think I'm kidding? After the Jebster meeting, many republicans are now claiming that the Martin murder was a 'tragedy' – IOW, they are trying to change their stripes. Know what? Nice words, but they do not comport with their prior behavior, which has always been to feed the flames that bring about such murders in the first place.

      Trayvon's parents have shown nothing but class and dignity through this whole ordeal and my heart aches for them and their other son.
      I sobbed uncontrollably listening to the 911 tape where you can hear Trayvon crying out for help followed by a gunshot then silence. No parent should ever have to hear that. What I've heard from fellow African Americans is a real anger that he called Sandra Fluke, but wouldn't touch this for weeks.

    I think everyone gets why he doesn't want to be involved in racial issues, especially after the blowback for his reaction to the Gates situation.

    Still, there are times when you have to have courage and take a stand. He could have made this exact statement a week ago.

    I love Obama, but his lack of following his heart on issues like this really bothers me.

      I’m an African-American, and I wasn’t angry about President Obama not commenting on it, right away. I knew that he wouldn’t say anything right away, but I knew he would eventually. I was worried that the right-wing, and the media would go out of their way to stir up even more racial division when he did, like they always do on the rare occasion when the president comments on a racial issue. But, I kind of understood why he didn’t. He has to be very careful, when dealing with race issues. He can’t even hug a black person without racists freaking out. But, I understand what you mean, and you are right.

      Being black I can understand these feelings, but a presidential statement or stance could compromise the investigation. Until a clear determination is made by the investigative departments, the President is prudent in not becoming involved. However much he may have wanted to call the parents he did the correct thing. a call would have leaked out. This is clearly very different to the Sandra Fluke issue. There was no conflict with the president calling Ms Fluke to offer support.

      The Sandra Fluke situation was unlike anything we have seen in modern politics.

      Sadly, Trayvon's case occurs every. single. day. all. over. the. country.

      So much hatred.

      At the very least, time had to pass for more information to come to light - good or bad.

      I'm sorry your friends feel that way.

      What if a totally different story emerged later? I don't think it was a CYA moment as much as President Obama, like the rest of the country, was waiting for more facts.

      The Sandra Fluke *case* was open and shut.

      ~~~~~~~~~`
      But the facts as they are emerging are just chilling! That poor scared little boy! My heart breaks for his whole family, all his friends, his lost future...
    15. Anonymous2:47 PM
      I understand, but please see how they are different: Fluke involved an attempted testimony before Congress – a federal issue. Martin involved a local murder theoretically under investigation. We now know it was NOT investigated, but at the time it would have been MOST inappropriate for any politician to stick his or her nose into an ongoing local (or federal) murder investigation. If you doubt what I am saying, please consult any criminal lawyer, and he or she will tell you that that's a no-no (prejudicing a potential jury panel); no mature politician does that sort of thing. Pandering politicians, yes, but that is not who Obama is.
  18. Gryph,
    Thank you for your insightful post. You, like President Obama, consider situations from another person/community's point of view.
    I feel like I'm back in a timewarp where young men get blown away on their motorcycles ("Easy Rider") and Southern bigoted sheriffs are suspicious of outsiders and blacks ("In the Heat of the Night").
    It's shocking that a kid on the phone with his girlfriend after purchasing snacks would be murdered like this and the event covered up by the local authorities.
    As skeptical as I am of the media, I'm glad they continued their coverage which has resulted in outrage in everyone who doesn't have a closed mind. Willie Geist on Morning Joe said (paraphrase): "The cops didn't contact the family? The father had been trying to reach Trayvon on his cell phone, all they would have to do is hit 'reply to Dad,' which would have taken 5 seconds."
    James Fallows notes how similar in appearance Trayvon and POTUS are:
    Remember the person who signed the legislation the police/Courts in Florida have used and abused which this criminal is standing behind to protect himself.
    Jeb Bush signed the legislation while Governor of FL with an NRA Representative standing right beside him when he signed the legislation. That same NRA that is to this day, in DC lobbying to have this law be adopted and signed into law nation wide.
    Also remember who was behind Bush, pushing for the law - State legislator Marco Rubio.
    Bush - who many Rethugs keep tossing the name in the air wanting him to run, even to step in if it goes to the convention.
    Rubio - who many Rethugs keep tossing the name and even Bush suggesting it on the day he released a statement endorsing Romney -- Rubio for VP pick.
    The NRA is saying it has nothing to do with them and that the law does not apply to this case. Talk about cherry picking.
    The law does not apply to the case but just on Wednesday this week, a Judge found a 'criminal' not guilty using this same law and he in fact was doing much the same -- he didn't 'stand his ground' -- he pursued the victim and stabbed him to death. Pursued -- just like Zimmerman did but this one got his free pass from a judge - Zimmerman's was from a cop acting as judge and maybe jury without full evidence and now the destruction of evidence.
    Yea -- this law is active and alive on the books in many states of the USofA. The Rethugs including a FL State Legislator are denying the increase of use and abuse of this law and that the crimes and deaths have increased in FL.
    Nothing has changed.
    Rick Scott, the slimmy healthcare system abuser/thief who is now Governor, is hoping to use what he is doing to make him look better in the public eye in that he has the lowest ratings in the nation. I hope this doesn't happen. One good deed doesn't improve 'charcter' after his destruction of the State he has done since taking office.
    I'm about as white bread as they come (and female, so not part of the "privileged white male" group - but I have benefited through my father and husband who are members of that group).
    And WE are disappointed - actually dismayed, angry and frustrated, at the INCREASE in racism we are seeing because of the Obama presidency (which is not the same as it being because of Obama). It hurts minorities more than it hurts me, but it hurts us all, and our children and grandchildren. It's in everyone's interest to eradicate racism, not to exploit it.
    Thanks for talking about this, Gryphen. I am a black woman. And this subject needs to be addressed.
    I've heard nothing but good things about the way Obama has handled this tragedy. Not everyone has heard about this, even though the blogs have been rattling for a week.
    I can't get over the NY Times describing Zimmerman as a "white hispanic". hello?
    the black/non-black divide in our society goes on.
    As a Caucasian, I also thought and hoped that Obama's Presidency would make huge inroads in eliminating racism in our Country.
    My heart breaks for the family and friends of Trayvon and all the other similar situtations.
      American racism is institutional. Our founding fathers saw to that, so how was President Obama supposed to eradicate it? White people want racism to go away? They'll have to do more than be afraid of black people, build fences around their communities, or move to the hinterland.
    Gryphen,
    I think you're a little out of touch with "the African American community." First, there is no one community. It is not a monolith. That's like saying that white conservatives and progressives think alike. Why are so many white people out of touch with black people? Why do black people seem so foreign, whether it's liberals or conservatives. Liberals seem comfortable reading about black people, but not knowing real black people. Conservatives just think African Americans are all stupid and superfluous, and if you've met one, you've met them all. See what I've just done; I've stereotyped.
    Black people know more about white people because we need to. White people, on the other hand, don't need to know us as individuals, so they don't bother. See. I did it again.
    I don't know where you got the idea that black people aren't supportive of President Obama. Maybe from Cornel West and Tavis Smiley. If so, widen your network. Many black people relate to the Obamas because they have children, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers, uncles who remind them of the Obamas. They are very familiar to black people.
    President Obama has a fine line to walk. One minute Ann Coulter is talking about "open season" on his children. The next, someone is telling Santorum, as he's aiming a gun, to imagine shooting Obama. This is no ordinary presidency.
    The Media Gets Suckered by Fox News’s Blame The Hoodie Distraction
    ...The right desperately needed a distraction because in the aftermath of the murder of Trayvon Martin, Americans were starting to ask questions about the Stand Your Ground law that has allowed the local police to claim that they can’t arrest shooter George Zimmerman. Fox News needed to shift the focus away from the real issues racism, gun violence, and power of the NRA and ALEC in crafting and passing state legislation. In short, they needed to find a way to blame the victim.
    Geraldo Rivera gave them their rationale. What Rivera floated was nothing more than a new spin on the old she deserved it because of the way she was dressed defense. His statements, which he first tested on Twitter last night, were designed to make headlines. They are supposed to get the media attention off of a cold blooded killing and focus it on a distraction. (Hoodies? That’s crazy. Who would say that?)
    The more time we spend talking about Geraldo Rivera and hoodies. The less time we spend talking about the dubious circumstances under which an innocent young man lost his life.
    Fox News understands something very important about the mainstream media. The corporate media will always react over the top inflammatory remarks in the same way that a baby gets transfixed by jangling car keys.
    All Fox News had to do was jangle some crazy remarks about hoodies out there, and the media immediately stopped talking about Trayvon Martin.
    Always the willing victim, the mainstream media has bought Fox News’s propaganda hook, line, and sinker.
    The President is doing the best he can. He is the first African American President and has been the target of hateful racism from day one. He deserves our support and understanding that no matter what he does the far right-wing nuts will continue to try and smear him like calling him a "food stamps" President, etc. He cannot appear to be biased in any way because he is the President of ALL the people.
    They have all crawled out from under their rocks and we are seeing them in the light of day, it's time. We all know what happened when Obama was elected, they are vibrating with hate and anger and its just exploding everywhere....this is gonna be one helluva summer and I predict we are gonna see record breaking voter turnout. I hope and pray I dont't see that headline when I log on in the morning as there are just way tooooo many nutz out there with guns and Obama is our only hope of getting thru this. If you ask me, Trayvon is exactly like that street merchant that started the Arab Spring...it's time.
  37. Have you heard the enhanced audio of the 911 tape? You can hear Zimmerman, as he is following Trayvon (after being told by police not to) say under his breath "F--king C--n!" Yes, it's a hate crime.
      Zimmerman says, "Fucking punks".
      (But yeah, he's saying right there that he is grouping this young man in with ALL "PUNKS".)
      He's acting like jury, judge and executioner.
    The black community at large was never disappointed in President Obama.
    Most black people DAILY know they can't spout off at the mouth at the white boss or white coworker, we can't say what we want to say and what other white coworkers can say because OUR behinds will be out of a job FIRST.
    Most black people know Obama has to conduct himself in a certain way, plus he's the president of ALL Americans, not just black Americans. He can't just come out with a plan for black people only. C'mon, now.
    There are black pundits, commentators, politicians, "intellectuals," talking heads etc. who make their living bashing Obama. Do not confuse the image they are trying to portray as the actual reality. They are bashing for bucks.
    None of these people have done very much for the black community except pimp our problems and profit from it, with their books and TV appearances, tours and symposiums.
    You will notice, most of the black personalities who consistently and constantly bash Obama have said very little about this Trayvon Martin situation EXCEPT to bash Obama. They've not expressed any words of support for his parents. They have not organized any marches or called their/FL congressperson. They have not tried to get up donations for his parents' legal fees.
    They HAVE complained that Obama hasn't called Trayvon's parents. They HAVE complained that Pres. Obama can call that white lady (Fluke) but not Trayvon. Now the man has said something, it's still not good enough. He should be shouting for Zimmerman's arrest from the Rose Garden, which as he explained Thursday, he can't do that.
    Please don't mistake bitter bloggers and TV personalities for having the "pulse" of black America because it's simply not true.
