Paul Ryan channeling Sarah Palin as he goes rogue against "The Stench." Update: Satire.

Courtesy of Politico:

Paul Ryan has gone rogue. He is unleashed, unchained, off the hook.

“I hate to say this, but if Ryan wants to run for national office again, he’ll probably have to wash the stench of Romney off of him,” Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Republican Party of Iowa, told The New York Times on Sunday.

Coming from a resident of Iowa, a state where people are polite even to soybeans, this was a powerful condemnation of the Republican nominee.

Though Ryan had already decided to distance himself from the floundering Romney campaign, he now feels totally uninhibited. Reportedly, he has been marching around his campaign bus, saying things like, “If Stench calls, take a message” and “Tell Stench I’m having finger sandwiches with Peggy Noonan and will text him later.”

Even before the stench article appeared, there was a strong sign that Ryan was freeing himself from the grips of the Romney campaign. It began after his disastrous appearance on Friday before AARP in New Orleans.

Ryan delivered his remarks in the style dictated by his Romney handlers: Stand behind the lectern, read the speech as written and don’t stray from the script. Ryan brought his 78-year-old mother with him and introduced her to the audience, which is usually a sure crowd pleaser.

But when Ryan began talking about repealing “Obamacare” because he said it would harm seniors, one woman in the crowd shouted, “Lie!” Another shouted “Liar!” and the crowd booed Ryan lustily.

Who boos a guy in front of his 78-year-old mother? Other 78-year-old mothers.

That was Friday, and that was the end of Ryan following the game plan. At a certain point, all running mates on failing campaigns feel they must break free from the manacles placed on them by the top of the ticket. Sarah Palin began pursuing her own path once she learned that John McCain was having strategy sessions with his morning bowl of Farina.

"The Stench?" Holy crap I don't think that even Palin was THAT dismissive of the man at the top of her ticket!

You know I have said it before, but it bears repeating, NOBODY who knows Mitt Romney seems to like him. Apparently Ryan is just the most recent of the Republicans to find themselves put off by Mitt the Twit's arrogance and creepy lack of any definable human traits.

And I think Romney is becoming aware that HE is the drag on the ticket. Did you see his incredibly awkward attempt to hijack a chant for Ryan and try to get them to chant for BOTH of them?

Ooh, EPIC FAIL!

Gee I wonder what this failed VP candidate will call the book HE writes about how the soon to be defeated campaign put him in a box and would not let "Ryan be Ryan?"

Update; Apparently the Politico piece was written as satire.  However it was so close to the perception that everybody has concerning the Romney/Ryan relationship that it has been reported as fact all over the internet and on a few news shows as well.

  1. Roger Simons is now saying that was satire. If so, it's only the second time in my life I've mistaken satire for a real news story. (The other time was a brilliant April Fool's piece that asserted that George W. Bush was Aleister Crowley's bastard.)

The thing is, Ryan is a nasty little piece of work with less of a heart than Romney. There's a reason he was named "Biggest Brown Noser" in his high school, a reason why he's disavowed Ayn Rand now that it's suddenly politically convenient to, and a reason why he's marching around his campaign bus calling the top of his ticket such an appalling name. He's a suck up to whoever can benefit him at that moment; when they no longer can, he sells them out.

And I truly look forward to watching Joe Biden wipe that smirk off his face once and for all.

Yeah, he looks like a little snot with those sad blue eyes, uncool widow's peak and lipless mouth. He is all facade and not at all "the best mind in the House"... although, in the GOP, his competition is nil. He does look totally nasty and insincere and deserves to be dumped on in the future.

  11. There's just no positive way to spin Mitt. Mitt Romney and John McCain are both buzz-kills when it comes to firing up an audience.

Do you remember McCain in front of the green screen with his speech? "That's not the kind of change we can believe in."

Here's 8 seconds of a clip of that speech. That's all I could manage to watch.

McCain totally wore his audience out. They were trying so hard to be enthusiastic, but McCain is just not a dynamic speaker, and it was flat from the git-go.

  12. Gryph -- I just read that the Politico article was a lame attempt at satire. The author posted this update, clarifying his intent:

"[Author’s note: Jonathan Swift did not really want Irish people to sell their children for food in 1729; George Orwell did not really want the clocks to strike thirteen in 1984; Paul Ryan, I am sure, calls Mitt Romney something more dignified than “Stench” and Microsoft did not invent PowerPoint as a means to euthanize cattle. At least I am pretty sure Microsoft didn’t.]"

The fact that there are grains of truth in there only serve to camouflage the intent of the article. It's just noise.

  30. I'm not so sure this was meant as satire. You can usually spot satire. This article was does not even have a hint of satire.

My bet is the author heard something he wasn't suppose to hear & wrote about it. It was devastating. The backtracking by calling it satire is most likely pressure from the Romney camp or the GOP.

    Just my opinion, though.

    1. Anonymous1:39 PM

Denise, your version sounds closer to the truth than what the author of the 'satire said.

Here's where the stench word was married to Romney in the fist place:
      NYT quote:
      "
'If the Republican ticket loses in November, the rush by Mr. Ryan and other 2016 hopefuls to position themselves for the Iowa caucuses “is going to look like Best Buy the night after Thanksgiving,” said Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Republican Party of Iowa. “I hate to say this, but if Ryan wants to run for national office again, he’ll probably have to wash the stench of Romney off of him.” '

The "satire" piece was written to riff off the above statement, but it sounds so like Ryan that it could have been said, Simon could have heard it,embellished it in his piece and then it exploded unlike anything he'd written so far.

      Delete
    2. Write this down. Classic Dis-information coordination to "Bury the lie in a discredited story" or put out a "farcical version" of the story. The "satire" has a purpose, and it is to deflect attention from the truth and turn anyone who seeks the truth into a perpetrator (the bad guy).

Usually done as a cover to bring ridicule to those outside inner circle in order to contain damage and prevent fact-digging after a slip-up. The only way it would be reported is firsthand and they won't talk now. Ridicule is employed to discourage those outside the bubble from "getting involved".

Remember who we are here and why we came here for the first time--- Sarah's wild ride story. And remember how many versions that have created and how many details that have changed over time as each iteration cycled.

Be skeptical of these Romney "toe-stubs", but treat the story as a diversion to be generally ignored anyway. I can only imagine what McCain's handlers REALLY said about Sarah as she went rogue.

We'll all hear more about it at or near the end of the election cycle. We'll also hear a lot of other crazy shit about Mitt and his team, but most at the top are tight-lipped because they'll be doing the same thing 4 years from now for Team Neo-Con.

    4. Yea, I can imagine Ryan & his staff referring to Romney as Stench while whining about how badly his Young Gun's career is going down the tubes.

We've all said things we regret later. I imagine the egotistical Ryan has little use for Romney.

I know the GOP touts Ryan as an intellectual, but I personally think he's not as bright as they claim. He's a pretty blue-eyed guy they think can they can bamboozle Americans for votes.

Personally, I don't think Ryan's budget plan is the *real* plan. The *real* plan, written by ALEC, and commissioned by the Koch brothers is probably locked up for safe-keeping to be implemented once they regain power.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I just know the Corporate-GOP is corrupt enough to lie to all of us. We do know this campaign hasn't and won't tell us anything about their policies. Hell, Romney-Ryan probably don't even know what their policies are. They'll have to wait for when their Corporate appointed staff get on board to implement them.

      I distrust anything GOP.

      Delete
    5. Well, the only conspiracy that matters to us is the one that's been ongoing for voter suppression.

Most of the dis-info is targeted at low-info GOP voters, who were likely going to vote for Mitt anyway. They're just trying to use fear to stimulate the number that show up at the polls. You're right that for us, it only strengthens our resolve.

And when the low-info GOP voters realize they've been bamboozled, they become less likely to vote at all, which hurts the GOP down-ticket as well. The more of Romney & Ryan BS that can be pinned to generic GOP candidates, the better for the Dems.

That's why Obama is up 8 points right now, and if the GOP Super-PACs keep throwing big money into a smoking hole in the ground, it is going to drag down the entire GOP ticket top-to-bottom.

The end result: I wouldn't be surprised to see an additional 15 house seats be in play a month from now that are considered red-leaning or red right now. I'm not even tracking the competitive House races but the way that the Democrats have solidified our chances in the Senate from a 61% probability to hold onto the Senate on Sept 9 to a 79.9% probability on last Friday, Sept. 21st. I'm very optimistic that we'll gain some ground in the House.

If nothing else, being elected by a wide margin, holding the Senate and gaining ground in the House will give Obama a mandate similar to Reagan's in 1984, where he won 49 states, allowing Obama to be very bold in putting on the boxing gloves against Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and Ryan.

Truthy story: Roger Simons actually purchased - but apparently did not read - my ebooks entitled "Get Rich Quick Writing Satire, Vol. 1" and "Get Rich Quick Writing Satire, Vol. 3". (Available from my website at admittedly exorbitant prices)

How do I know he didn't read them? Well, first, his writing lacks the mandatory 'obvious tell' found in effective satire and third, he wrote me a nasty email demanding a media courtesy copy of "Get Rich Quick Writing Satire, Vol. 2" - which, of course, does not even exist. So, I sent him another copy of "Get Rich Quick Writing Satire, Vol. 3" - are you following this? - retitled "Get Rich Quick Writing Satire, Vol. 2" and received in return a curt reply reading simply "Thanks, Bub".
