The head of a northeast Ohio charity says that the Romney campaign last week “ramrodded their way” into the group’s Youngstown soup kitchen so that GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan could get his picture taken washing dishes in the dining hall.
Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, said that he was not contacted by the Romney campaign ahead of the Saturday morning visit by Ryan, who stopped by the soup kitchen after a town hall at Youngstown State University.
“We’re a faith-based organization; we are apolitical because the majority of our funding is from private donations,” Antal said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. “It’s strictly in our bylaws not to do it. They showed up there, and they did not have permission. They got one of the volunteers to open up the doors.”
He added: “The photo-op they did wasn’t even accurate. He did nothing. He just came in here to get his picture taken at the dining hall.”
Ryan had stopped by the soup kitchen for about 15 minutes on his way to the airport after his Saturday morning town hall in Youngstown. By the time he arrived, the food had already been served, the patrons had left, and the hall had been cleaned.
Upon entering the soup kitchen, Ryan, his wife and three young children greeted and thanked several volunteers, then donned white aprons and offered to clean some dishes. Photographers snapped photos and TV cameras shot footage of Ryan and his family washing pots and pans that did not appear to be dirty.
So let's get this straight.
In an attempt to fight the image that the Romney/Ryan ticket does not care about 47% of the population, Ryan pushed his way into a soup kitchen after all of the hard work was over, and had his picture taken washing already cleaned dishes.
Oh yeah THAT ought to help their credibility!
P.S. Here is video of the photo op. You can clearly see that the kitchen is spotless and Ryan simply says "I'm going to get them wet, and you're going to dry them" to his son.

Apparently the dishes and/or pots and pans were not dirty so no Ryan hands were subjected to greasy dish water. And apparently the soup kitchen people were none to happy about the intrusion. What a way to teach your children - dishonesty!
ReplyDeleteActually, Ryan said he was "going to water the dishes" and his kid(s) could dry them. I've never watered my pots, pans, and dishes - I tend to wash them. Watering them certainly won't clean them! Oh wait...they were already clean.

Also, by using the charity as a prop to bolster his image as a "normal" "person," Ryan diminishes the work that the charity does.

Ryan thinks we are even dumber than Romney does. FAIL!!! Too bad this didn't come out before the debate. I think Joe might have really had something to laugh about!

In Washington state you have to take a class and pass a test to get a health card to work in a kitchen..he may have gotten them in trouble with the Health Dept.

Ahhhh, the dishonesty that is politics. To those who saw the video of Ryan doing dishes, there is no doubt that they needed washing. And unless you watch MSNBC or read this blog you won't have any inclination to think they were clean dishes. So for those who watch MSNBC, and who obviously don't support R&R anyway, this has some impact. On the other hand, many undecided voters may be reading this blog and when they learn that the dishes were supposedly clean to start with, will certainly change their vote to Obama/Biden. This number of people could make a difference in the election results! Except that: If Obama doesn't beat Romney tonight in the debate, he's toast.

I worked the kitchen on slow nights and there is no way he ever had an experience close to this. His team decided they needed a photo opportunity at the expense of reality.
