They found one! The Republicans FINALLY find a woman to name as Chair one of their committees. That's a woman right?

The current House committee chairman sausage fest.
This from NBC:

After enduring negative headlines that all of the House Republican committee chairmanships will be filled by men in the next Congress, Republicans have found their woman.

NBC News has learned that Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) will be named chair of the House Administration Committee. Miller did not serve on the committee during the 112th Congress.

Well so what if she has no experience with the committee? An appointment is an appointment, right?

Just so long it's not some really embarrassing chairmanship that nobody ever really wants, or that involves something kind of sexist like, oh I don't know, house keeping or something like that.

The House Administration Committee deals with the pertinent administrative business of the House. The committee can decide such mundane things as whether or not the House cafeterias will use paper or Styrofoam plates -- or more serious matters such as benefit packages for congressional workers and how the Library of Congress operates. The Committee also monitors the expense accounts of House members.

Oh, so she's in charge of the kitchen, and managing the House money? Oh yeah, nothing sexist about THAT!

House Speaker John Boehner issued this statement: “From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee. In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents. And her experience as Michigan secretary of state will be invaluable given the committee’s oversight of campaign finance and election laws.

By the way sources say that after those official remarks Boehner then whispered under his breath, "And besides I am pretty sure she has a vagina, so you liberals can just back the fuck off!" (Okay I made that part up, but you KNOW he was thinking it.)

Okay let's take us a look at this Rep. Candace Miller shall we?

Oh! Well, she's you know...holy crap!

Well nice try Republicans, I mean you work with what you've got right?

Okay I'm going to close this post because she kind of scares me. (So much for sleeping with the lights off tonight.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that woman has either an Adam's apple or a developing goiter. Not to mention a hell of an attitude, with an expression like that. Just saying...

Better watch yourself anon...I got called a twat, bitch, idiot and all kinds of names for saying the same thing about Holly Petraeus. The regulars around here don't take kindly to you stating the obvious. I went to Catholic school, and to me, the nun look represents the no frills, no nonsense utilitarian look of a woman who could care less about her hair, clothes, or makeup, not that there's anything wrong with that, it is what it is.

BTW, I am a forty something woman , I just happen to have an interest in hair, clothes, and makeup, call me crazy. The bitches here love to rail on Sarah Palin, but God forbid you do it to anyone else.

Yes the rethuglicans are sexist dips. However, you judging Rep. Candace Miller on her looks makes you a sexist as well.

News flash G. She's a fairly regular representation of what late 50s to early 60s aged women look like. Why don't we judge her on her actions and abilities, as we judge men, rather than on her looks?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exactly. This is a what a 58-year-old woman looks like who chooses not to rely on makeup. She looks no-nonsense, not scary; Republicans could use more of those. Her daughter is a member of United Auto Workers. There's hope.

Not sure where you live but she is not representative of the average 50 or 60 year old in my community. Not that looks matter with regards to this post, but your generalization of what 50 or 60 year olds look like is way off the mark.

  7. so you write a post about the sexism shown by the lack of female chairpersons and the type of committee that finally got one, but open and close it by commenting on a woman's physical appearance?

gryph, that type of sexist behavior is the root of the problem!

gross headline "that's a woman?", and when you said "let's take a look at her" i was expecting that you were being figurative and we were about to "look" at her record in politics..... nope. just going to act like she's a terrible monster because, what? she's older and not thin? you find her kinda ugly? just exactly like nearly every single man she works with? but because she's a woman we should totally judge her on how she looks, not what she's actually done as a politician....

that made me feel pretty ill. and very disappointed in you.

I agree. Take any one of the men's pictures above and let's make comments about their looks. You won't find any great lookers among those pictures from what I can see, but then I don't judge people by their looks.

      Delete
  8. and even worse, we know gryph considers himself a feminist, and generally isn't an asshole, SO this kind of thing just shows how very deeply sexism runs in our culture and how fully normalized and "automatic" it is.

"feminism: the radical notion that women are people."

not brainless baby-makers, not pretty things to look at, not possessions, just PEOPLE!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Okay for the record I am not suggesting that Rep. Miller is not qualified, nor am I judging her on her age.

I simply found it rather humorous that after essentially giving EVERY prestigious committee chairmanship away to men, Boehner then gives her one of the two remaining lesser positions. and in doing so chooses somebody who seems rather strikingly unfeminine.

That to me seemed rather of ironic.

As for the photo, that was the first one I stumbled across and it literally reminds me of a woman who watched me as a child and regularly beat me for every minor infraction of the rules that she could imagine.

So yes, the face in the photos is much like the one that once haunted my nightmares.

Other than that, I am sure she is a lovely person.

like when that fox affiliate anchor lady dismissively called rachel maddow "an angry young man" joke?

      that still isn't funny.

so this miller woman might have been born less than conventionally attractive, and she's 58 and not wearing makeup. kim f-ing kardashian looks fairly "unfeminine" with no makeup on! the point is that you don't introduce male politicians this way, based solely on their looks. i think you're not getting it yet......

I agree they gave her a non-prestigious position, likely because she's a woman. But then you add insult to injury with your comments on her looks. Sounds exactly like stuff I've read at c4p about the 'ugly' liberal women.

Pamela Gellar is a totally hot and very doable woman, but she is a complete republican rightwing lunatic. However, based upon this most recent post, you perhaps would rather see someone hot and pretty like Pamela, or even aging hot like Sarah Palin, be in this committee position rather than this rather dowdy older conservative woman. No woman who cares about her female friends, relatives and/or descendants could possibly be a friend to members of a party who treat women with the utter disrespect thrown around by the old white men of the GOP.

I would respect Ms Miller more if she told them what to do with their job - and she worked from within to stop the never ending attacks on women's right to control their own bodies and lives.
