MIke Hukabee blames yesterday's school shooting on fact that we've "removed God from our schools."

Courtesy of Think Progress:

Addressing the tragedy on Fox News, Huckabee dismissed calls for stricter gun control and claimed that future violence can be prevented by solving matters of “the heart” and turning to God:

HUCKABEE: Ultimately, you can take away every gun in America and somebody will use a bomb. When somebody has an intent to do incredible damage, they’re going to find a way to do it… People will want to pass new laws, but unless you change people’s hearts, they’re our transition to the pastor side. This is a heart issue, it’s not something, laws don’t change this kind of thing.

NEIL CAVUTO (HOST): You know, inevitably people ask after tragedies like this, how could God let this happen?

HUCKABEE: Well, you know, it’s an interesting thing. We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we’ve systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability? That we’re not just going to have to be accountable to the police, if they catch us. But one day, we will stand before a Holy God in judgment. If we don’t believe that, then we don’t fear that.

Yes of course this is the Right Wing response to this tragedy. More guns and God in the schools, and less gays, and all of the nation's troubles will be over.

Clearly Adam Lanza was a deeply troubled young man, who may have been suffering from a mental disorder. Somehow I fail to see how having more Bibles in the school would have had ANY impact on this tragedy.

This is why you don't ask for complicated solutions from simple minded people.

So what did Huckajerk have to say when there was that shooting at the AMISH school? Or when a kid who was brought up in the church bu Bible-thumpers gets Daddy's gun and shoots his girlfriend? These people are insane, and Huck is leading the pack to hell.

Yes, right - Bibles in schools - THAT'S what would've stopped it!

And BANKS! We need Bibles in banks, too! Then they wouldn't get robbed.

And those telephone-booth-sized casinos too! PUT BIBLES IN THE CASINOS! At least one of those damned casinos get robbed every night by some fool that has a gun but doesn't have a Bible!

And convenience stores - you know how much gun violence happens in convenience-stores every day?
    Well I don't either - but I'll bet it's a LOT!
WE NEED TO GET GOD BACK INTO THE CONVENIENCE STORES!!!

    It couldn't be more obvious!

    Why isn't anyone paying attention?
Am I not using enough exclamation points?!!!!

Listen: it's just as plain as the nose on your face:
We simply need to shoot every single person that isn't a God-fearing Christian and then give every single person a gun.

How can you not see that?

    1. Very good. I asked my British husband WHAT can Republicans be THINKING? He says, "They don't think."

When thinking has been replaced by rote belief, superstition & zombie adherence to some magical gobble-de-good, what do you expect from them?

That we are still surprised by their reactions is surprising.

One of the very first things I thought as this tragedy was unfolding on my TV yesterday was not only are guns too easy to get but the health care system has failed so many and this is the result. When my husband came home from work one of the first comments he made about this was "thank you, Ronald Regean" (something I say a lot). He's the one that dismantled mental health institutions.
I can't help but see a parallel between the need for more gun control and the need for health care for all in this country. When are we going to get it right? Many other countries have universal health care and strict gun laws and tragic incidents like this are less likely to happen. It's a simple formula.
What about MY freedom to be protected from mentally ill gun toting bible thumpers. I want to be FREE of GOD, GUNS AND VAGINAL PROBES!!!! It's time the MAJORITY was heard. Liberals need to start speaking up. Why am I hearing so much from people like Huckabee who are the minority in our country?

  4. Hi Gryphen, your NRA types are actually slightly right that gun control is not the total answer. Here in Australia gun control is fairly tight but i know a farmer who has a sea container as his gun safe, and when I saw the guns he kept in the house gun safe there were 12 weapons. The point is that anyone who can show a legitimate use for a rifle can have one. Handguns are restricted to security guys and gun club members with very stringent conditions on the storage of their weapons. Our biggest problem with guns is that in rural areas where gun ownership is higher the rate of successful suicide is higher The other side to your gun violence problem is the culture of using guns. It will take some time (generations ?) after sensible gun control is introduced for the death rate to fall.

He can't and won't. The only thing these "Christians" can say, when they DO answer. boils down to this -- since EVERYthing that happens is God's will -- "It's God's will that 22 children die." -- what kind of God does that make him? They can't answer that. It's too despressing even for them.

What sickens me is when Survivor contestants pray to their God before a contest to help them wn a million dollars. "Let it be thy will." WHAT????

Exactly. And the second the government tries to instill "Christian only" prayer, what about Muslims and Jews? The reasoning, dear idiot Huckabee, is not to take your fake God out of school, but to allow children who believe to pray to THEIR God. What a jerk. A big fat rich white guy who rewrites history for children, and who goes on TV and blames the school system for an NRA sponsored gunman. Again.

OUr nation was founded on the idea of the separation of church and state. It is only logical that the same seperation applies to public schools. Hence the very existence of private religious schools. The ultimate goal of Mr. Huckabee's comments appears to be part of the continued attack on public education. The GOP really seems to like undereducated, docile, unquestioning followers that are willing to work for Twinkies or kill in the name of his God.

Didn't this man give up preaching once he found out politics paid better? What a hypocrite. He now lives in a multi million dollar mansion on the beach. One of his obese sons was detained at the airport for trying to board a plane with a gun. I do not know if it was the same son who was charged with animal cruelty for abusing and skinning a stray dog. Where was God then? Surely as a preacher he taught his own kids about God and the bible? These hypocrites can always find a soft spot to land on Fox, home of the money grubbing repubs. The parents of these children do not need a two faced so-called preacher telling them what is wrong with the school system. Having lost my son two years ago, I can tell you there is no pain like it. He died from health reasons at 45, but was still my youngest child. I would not even to this day appreciate a hypocrite like lard-assed Huck preaching to me. He should clean up his own backyard first.

And Huckabee assumes this kind of rampage never happens in a "Christian" environment? he knows better, but Fox is still reeling from the Obama re-election, and now have to go back to claiming that our ills stem from 'turning away from God,' and wait, I'm certain a finger will be pointed at Obama, and never ever at themselves for creating a hateful atmosphere every day. I cringe everytime I see and hear the mingle christian ade about let God pick your mate. He's taking time to get you married but doen't have time to worry of your marriage lasts more than a yr or so! Or ifbout children being abused, raped or hungry. The things that happen to children are terrible, and unimaginable to most of us.If they die it's just god's will, he needs them up there with him. I caught the last 2 minutes of sisters wives, this nuts said they had no idea that children were abused in polygamy. What have they been doing all these years, they haven't read a paper? I do think our country can do some things and one would be no one on mental disability should be allowed to have a gun. If their mental disabily is so bad that they can't work or get along with others, why would you put a gun in their hands?

He was an honors student who lived in a prosperous neighborhood with his mother, a well-liked woman who enjoyed hosting dice games and decorating the house for the holidays.

Now Adam Lanza is suspected of killing his mother and then gunning down more than two dozen people, 20 of them children, at a Connecticut grade school before taking his own life.

The 20-year-old may have suffered from a personality disorder, law enforcement officials said.

Investigators were trying to learn as much as possible about Lanza and questioned his older brother, who is not believed to have any involvement in the rampage.

Lanza shot his mother at their home before driving her car to Sandy Hook Elementary School and – armed with at least two handguns – carried out the massacre, officials said.

A third weapon, a .223-caliber rifle, was found in the car, and more guns were recovered during the investigation.

So far, authorities have not spoken publicly of any possible motive. They found no note or manifesto, and Lanza had no criminal history.

Witnesses said the shooter didn't utter a word.

Lanza's aunt said her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it.

Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., said she was close with Adam Lanza's mother and sent her a Facebook message Friday morning asking how she was doing. Nancy Lanza never responded.

Marsha Lanza described Nancy Lanza as a good mother and kind-hearted.

If her son had needed counseling, "Nancy wasn't one to deny reality," she told The Associated Press late Friday.

Marsha Lanza said her husband saw Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary about him.

Catherine Urso, who was attending a vigil Friday evening in Newtown, Conn., said her college-age son knew the killer and remembered him for his alternative style.

"He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths," she said.

Adam Lanza belonged to a technology club at Newtown High School that held "LAN parties" – short for local area network – in which students would gather at a member's home, hook up their computers into a small network and play games.

Gloria Milas, whose son Joshua was in the club with Lanza, said Nancy Lanza hosted one of the parties.

She recalled a school meeting in 2008 organized by the gunman's mother to try to save the job of the club's adviser. At the meeting, Milas said, Adam Lanza's brother Ryan said a few words in support of the adviser, who he said had taken his brother under his wing.

"My brother has always been a nerd," Ryan Lanza said then, according to Milas. "He still wears a pocket protector."

Joshua Milas, who graduated from Newtown High School in 2009, said Adam Lanza was generally a happy person but that he hadn't seen him in a few years.

"We would hang out, and he was a good kid. He was smart," Joshua Milas said. "He was probably one of the smartest kids I know. He was probably a genius."

Mike Huckabee is not in line with the gospel. First of all, saying that "future violence can be prevented by solving matters of the heart and turning to God" points directly back to HIM. IMO, if a pastor believes the need is out there for people to find Christ, then he should be "out" there helping the lonely, reaching out to the mentally challenged, finding ways to be a friend to a young man who is hurting inside.

Huckabee's idea that taking God out of schools is going to somehow suddenly turn every kid into a fearless reckless renegade, or a crazed killer. But, doesn't he know that being in "Christ" means being instant in season, ready to reach out? Huckabee should be working in a homeless shelter, or becoming a Big Brother to young confused men, or talking to the addicted, afflicted, oppressed instead of vocalizing his opinion from the safety and comfort of his big Fox Studio. It's people like Huckabee that think they have all the answers to today's problems, yet don't lift a finger to help.

Where was Huckabee when men like all the previous shooters were in their private hells of their minds? Building his new mansion? Re-signing his new contract with Fox? Would God have Mike be occupied with the things of the world rather than to hang around those who are troubled? Maybe an edifying word to them might give them hope and could have prevented them becoming killing machines.

But no, the Huckabees think that a plaque with the 10 Commandments on it, or a picture of a white Jesus on the wall, or a prayer in classroom to start the new day is going to make the difference. Legislating a prayer in a classroom is far removed from a child who "wants" to talk to God every morning in his own home, before he sets out to start his day. Forcing kids to 'pray' when they don't have the heart for it isn't going to make the nation a better place.

If Huckabee wants to blame this tragedy on the lack of God in public, then the answer to his problem starts with HIM. People like him need to leave their cushy jobs and walk a few steps down the influential media ladder, and act out what they preach. God intended for it to begin with US, not government.

I wonder what Mr Huckabee's excuse for these killings is then......

1980 First Baptist Church of Daingerfield, Texas. Eight died in that incident.

June 20, 1994 Former airman Dean Allen Mellberg, 20, opened fire inside a hospital at the Fairchild Air Force Base before he was shot dead by a military police officer outside. Total injured and killed: 28

September 1999 - a gunman opened fire at a prayer service in Fort Worth, Texas, killing six people before committing suicide.

November 2004 - in Birchwood, Wisconsin, a hunter killed six other hunters and wounded two others after an argument with them.

March 2005 - a man opened fire at a church service in Brookfield, Wisconsin, killing seven people.

November 2009 - U.S. army psychologist Major Nidal Hasan opened fire at a military base in Fort Hood, Texas, leaving 13 dead and 42 others wounded.

April 2 - A gunman kills seven people and wounds three in a shooting rampage at a Christian college in Oakland.

I'm sure there are more, but this is enough to show Mike Huckabee that having guns or Christanity does not prevent acts of violence by deranged people.

But before we give President Obama a pass for his sterling speach and tears yesterday, and we all give ourselves a pat on the back for our caring and outrage over this tragic event, we have some reconciling to do.

Where is our caring and outrage for the children killed in Pakistan and Yemen by US drone strikes? (this account places the number at 178) These are still innocent children and they are just as dead as the children in Connecticut. And the same President who cried for the Connecticut children orders even more drone strikes. This is a major reason I didn't support him this time around.

I was dead for 4 minutes. Full cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.

I've been to the flip side, and I find that being dead would be the PERFECT opportunity for a benevolent being to step forward and show this young atheist that, hey, there is a god. It would have been the perfect way to convert all those who don't believe, by showing an adamant non believer that there is, in fact, a god.

    And I was saved!!!!

    By the ER doctors.

There was no white light. There were no dead relatives. My brain did flood with DMT from my pineal gland, and nerve endings in my brain and eyes did fire off in a last chance effort to make sense of clinical death.

    But there was no god.

And for Huckabee to be so audacious to say that he knows what god would and would not do, and he would allow children to die because there was no prayer in schools, when these children could very well have attended mass on Sunday's, it absolutely sickening.

Huckabee is an asshole and I cannot believev he was even considered as a candidate for USPO!

I've listened to his radio show and heard him lie and just plain out agitate things.

If he is a minister, I'd NEVER attend his church or sermons.

No wonder America is becoming less and less christians with examples like this man! Don't trust this guy any futher than I could throw him and that wouldn't be far -

God must have been absent when: Track cut the School Bus brake lines, when Willow VANDALIZED a home, when Bristol spread her legs in a tent in a drunken stupor, when CREEPY CHUCKLES told his girls to not wear panties to bed, when Track and Bristol used drugs and alcohol on Dylan Kolvig's Dad's boat, when
TAWD PIMPED AND PROSTITUTED for Profit, when Sarah LIED about the WILD RIDE, when CBJ assisted with the BABY HOAX? Maybe the HUCKSTER and the GRIFTER FAMILY have a different GOD.

I know I'm late to this post but just wanted to add a another BIG FU to Huckabee. What an ass. I am so sick of these religious people thinking they know it all. You don't, so shut your big ignorant mouth.

Huckabee pardoned two men (purportedly because they found Jesus in prison). One went onto to rape and murder a woman (and a 4 year old child). And the other killed 4 policeman while they were having breakfast. AND PEOPLE STILL LISTEN TO THIS GUY?!

Sadly, this seems to be a mime of the evangelical right.

I was unaware that praying in public schools was common in some areas of the country when I began my teaching career in the early 1970s.

I had attended parochial school through 4th grade, and always interpreted the concept of "Separation of Church and State" as meaning prayer was not to be part of a public school experience.

Had I been told that I was expected as part of my job description to start leading a non-denominational prayer or a Moment of Silence daily, I would not have continued practicing my teaching profession.

Had I wanted to lead public prayer, I would have chosen a different profession.

Some folks seem to think that teachers arming themselves would be a good thing. As for me, it makes me cringe.

Personally, as a recently retired teacher, the thought of some of my former colleagues packing at a middle school does not soothe my nerves at all. Actually, I find the thought alone to be scary as hell.

Over the years security did become something we adjusted to as armed resource officers were assigned to middle and high schools in my district. But, these were police officers who knew the ramifications of using their weapon and were trained in using it.

This "Wild West concept" is too 19th century for a 21st century world.

As far as I am concerned, towns having there own militias was necessary in the 1700s. But, as we moved from colonies to states there was an apparatus put in place that allowed for what would become today's National Guard.

So, having a National Guard Armory located in an adjacent town works fine for me. But, individuals using weaponry meant for the military under a ruse of the 2nd amendment is and has always been a recipe for disaster.

If a few tweaks of gun law aren't put in place this time will we next hear of a situation involving a newborn nursery at a large hospital???

What a sad time for America on so many levels.

I agree that the thought of teachers being armed is not a reasonable solution.

Perhaps a metal detector with a security guard for anyone without proper identification (such as a school issued ID for teachers and other employees) would be required to pass through.

This could easily be paid for by a tax on the sale of all fire arms and ammunition. Waiting for the NRA to step up to the plate.

According to Christian theology, isn't God omniscient and omnipresent? Why wouldn't He also be here at this place at this time?

Would Jesus, who loved all children, abandon these children in their time of need?

Who is this God of Huckabee's?

Yeah, God MADE him SLAUGHTER those innocent kids, teachers and administrators with God sanctioned ASSAULT WEAPONS, afterall the commandments CLEARLY say "Kill thy Neighbors".

reverend Huckabee is sorely mistaken, I'm willing to wager there was a LOT of prayer in that school that day.

I think a more "believable" argument is that things like this didn't happen as often when there was Asbestos in school, ergo taking Asbestos out of the Schools caused this massacre.

And also, these same loonies who want Gawd in schools also want everyone and anyone to have access to any weapon they want,"Gawd guns n guts made 'Meriiker",so if the guns are still everywhere how will religion in schools do any good?
