Lawrence O'Donnell tears into one time NRA spokesman, and current board member, Tom Selleck.
Courtesy of MSNBC:
Actor Tom Selleck became the poster boy for the National Rifle Association–and the subject of controversial publicity–14 years ago, after two high students at Columbine High School murdered 13 people and injured 21 students. The Columbine massacre occurred a month after Tom Selleck appeared on the NRA ad with a rifle across his shoulder.
In addition to acting as the public spokesman, Tom Selleck is now a member of the Board of Directors of the NRA. And so, “the time has come to do what Rosie O’Donnell refused to do 14 years ago–question Tom Selleck’s humanity,” according to MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell.
In the past 14 years, a shooter killed 32 people and wounded 17 on the campus of Virginia Tech, setting the record for American gun massacres. Then on January 8, 2011, a shooter killed six and wounded 13, including Congressman Gabby Giffords. On July 20, 2012, a man using a hundred-round ammunition drum killed 12 people and wounded 58, setting another record for the highest number of people shot in an American gun massacre. Finally on December 14, 2012, a man killed 20 children and six teachers in a Connecticut elementary school. O’Donnell states that Selleck remained silent after those shootings.
You know I watched that original broadcast of the Rosie O'Donnell Show and I have to say at the time I kind of felt bad for Tom Selleck. Today I do not have a shred of sympathy for him left.
Lawrence is right, he needs to speak out and take responsibility for the organization that he represents.

Time Warner Cable Bans Certain Gun Ads
ReplyDeleteIn the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting massacre, Time Warner Cable announced that it will no longer be airing certain types ads that feature guns, Broadcasting and Cable reported on Friday.
"We no longer accept ads showing semi-automatic weapons and guns pointed at people," the company said in a statement. "We stand by this policy. If it's essential to a business owner to show this kind of imagery in their commercials, there are other advertising options in the marketplace."

Are Children Just Supposed To Shut Up And Die?
ReplyDeleteHowever, children are uniquely relevant to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, yet it seems as though we’re ready to give a voice to anyone and everyone except the group of people who were the targets of that attack. The kids who sat onstage as President Obama unveiled his plans were not coerced, or compromised by fresh trauma, they wrote thoughtful letters to the President, they were invited to attend, and that’s what they did. Instead of wanting to silence these kids, we should be wanting to hear more from them. Those fainting and fanning themselves over this are so busy being outraged that these kids spoke out that they don’t seem to have listened to what they had to say.

West Point Military Study Warns Of ‘America’s Violent Far-Right’
ReplyDelete“In the last few years, and especially since 2007, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of attacks and violent plots originating from individuals and groups who self-identify with the far-right of American politics,” the report’s executive summary reads. “These incidents cause many to wonder whether these are isolated attacks, an increasing trend, part of increasing societal violence, or attributable to some other condition.”
The report warns of three categories of rightwing extremists that represent terroristic threats: “[T]he Racist/White Supremacy Movement, the Anti-Federalist Movement, and the Christian Fundamentalist Movement.”

Some other condition? Yeah, the morons can't handle the FACT that an intelligent, successful black man is now the President Of The United States. I hope they all burn in whatever hell they believe in.

In 2008, the Anchorage Daily News ran this deck bellow the headline: “NO MORE GUNS: Alaska State Defense Force stripped of many powers.”
ReplyDeleteIrony knows no bounds when it comes to the Tea Party.
In 2008, Tea Party Queen and Shoot ‘Em Up and Hang ‘Em Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) disarmed brigade members of the Alaska State Defense Force (think volunteer militia) at the recommendation of the state military officials, based on a report by an investigator with the Washington National Guard.
(I)n a major decision proving unpopular with at least some of the force’s roughly 280 members, the state is taking away the brigade’s guns.
Yes, Sarah Palin, as executive of the state, took away their guns.

She took our guns! (Think South Park episodes featuring the immigrant hating chorus repeating "They took our jobs")
DeleteTuk ur jozz.
DeleteI love you 6:04pm
Delete:-)
Don't be catfishing me. That's a term I just learned from the girlfriend hoax story about the Notre Dame player who might be almost as naive and gullible as I am. Just kidding. He's not nearly as gullible as I am. Wink
DeleteLove you too! ;-)
Words have consequences. Sometimes, so does silence. Grow a pair, Tom, and speak up for what's right and speak against what's wrong. The NRA is part of the problem with mass violence in recent years. In fact, the NRA exacerbates the growing tension in the country today with its fear-based propaganda, which serves the interests of the weapons of death industry.
ReplyDeleteHis silence will confirm who he really is.
DeleteI'll say Tom Sellek is quiet. I didn't know he was anything with the NRA. I don't keep up, I guess. It wouldn't have surprised me to hear he had been dead the last 14 years. The guy is definitely low key and quiet. That may be what it takes to be a spokesperson for the NRA. You sure it isn't Sarah Palin that has that job?
ReplyDeleteHey, coward $arah! Where are you and your RETARD family? Come out and play so you can be bitch-slapped again!
DeleteSarah Palin hasn't had a job since July, 2009. If you can call what she did for the 2.5 years to that point "working". The AK legislature seemed to think otherwise, a la, "Where's Sarah?" buttons everyone was wearing in Juneau.
DeleteOnly slightly O/T, from PoliticusUSA:
ReplyDelete"The Right Calls Obama a Dictator, but Sarah Palin Disarmed the Alaska Civil Militia"

I'm sorry but I don't support what Lawrence is doing. It's pretty nasty. This direct attack on Tom Selleck is off-base. I like Lawrence, and find him brilliant in his rants, but this is just not right. Why should Selleck be singled out and have to prove his humanity? This is really just so off base. It makes me cringe what Lawrence is doing. Not cool.
ReplyDeleteI'm not big on guns at all, and I'm even more disgusted with how people choose to interpret the 2nd amendment, but what Lawrence is doing is not a good thing, in this case. He's crossed a line and I'm sorry to see it. Character assassination is what it's called and it's uncalled for.
I agree with you somewhat, but I wonder if Larry is using Tom to rattle the cages of anyone in that organization who may have a shred of decency. I loved TSelleck, Oh the dreams I have had about that man; and he is a decent moral person. I think that his participation with the NRA is confusing to anyone who knows the man and Larry is using that to get some dialog going withing the NRA and asking Tom to step up and make a difference. Hope it works. I can't imagine that Tom is comfortable rubbing elbows with the likes of Ted and was happy with that disgusting commercial.
DeleteRosie tore into Tom Sellek not Lawrence!!
ReplyDeleteI rate Tom Selleck right up there with Ted Nugent. Which isn't far.
ReplyDeleteChuck Schumer: NRA Is 'A Fringe Group' (VIDEO)
ReplyDeleteSen. Chuck Schumer told HuffPost Live Friday that the National Rifle Association has become a very extreme group that "doesn't even represent average gun holders."
"They sure are a fringe group," Schumer said, "but whether enough of my colleagues are ready to admit that, I'm not sure."

With just a single exception, the attack in Tucson last year, every public shooting in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed since at least 1950 has occurred in a place where citizens are not allowed to carry their own firearms.
ReplyDeleteYah sure......gun bans make us safe....uh huh....
Do you understand what a red herring is? I didn't think so. Look it up and forward your new learning to whomever taught you that talking point.
Delete8:27
DeleteDid you know that. no one has ever been shot by someone else who didn't have a gun? Figure they one out, scooter.
Fort Hood?
DeleteLinks or it is BS.
DeleteHey from one Anonymous to another - U.S. military bases are "gun free zones" to anyone except soldiers on the range or the MPs/security. The soldiers who were killed were all trained (they were in a pre-deployment processing area), and many were combat vets well able to respond under fire, but were, by policy, unarmed prior to shipping out to Afghanistan. It is possible they had their rifles but no ammo to go with them. Thus, our well trained fighting force was forced into being one big fat target. If those soldiers had been armed - at the very least the toll would have been much lower and maybe zero - I know I wouldn't hesitate to shoot someone holding weapons and shouting "Allahu Akhbar".
DeleteBTW - in case you are wondering I was on Ft Hood about 1/4 mile away when that all went down.
"In the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting massacre, Time Warner Cable announced that it will no longer be airing certain types ads that feature guns,"
ReplyDeleteThe question is, will they still broadcast shows that glorify the use of guns to solve problems? Will we still be watching punks acting tough and casual with guns? Will Dirty Harry, and Die Hard, and Arnold Swartzenegger movies still be shown?
If so, this is a hypocritical move, done for calculated motives. Otherwise, why pick on responsible gun owners, but glorify gratuitous gun violence?
Now Tom Selleck is guilty of some crime because he supports gun rights? Seriously people, this is just as crazy as the birther tin foil hatters. I support gun rights too. Let's ban everything that a mentally ill person can hurt people with. Lets ban free speech because of the KKK. Lets ban free exercise of religion because of Westboro Idiots. Lets ban free press because the Unibomber demands that we publish his manifesto.
ReplyDeleteShe escaped!

In Beaver Falls, Pa. 3 kids 14 and under shot and killed a young mother because her husband wouldnt give them cigarettes. They could not buy a pack of smokes because of the danger that smoking poses, but they had no problem each getting guns. All 3 young teenagers were armed. In PA, there are more rigorous background checks performed on people before their purchase of a puppy than before the purchase of a gun.
ReplyDeleteAgain - complete nonsense. No one under 18 may own or purchase a firearm (long rifle) or 21 (handgun).
DeleteAnyone buying a gun must undergo a NICS (criminal background check) and to carry legally must undergo additional checks.
Check the laws at http://www.pafoa.org/law
I am pretty sure that many more kids have cigarettes or drugs in their possession than guns.
6:45- not nonsense
