There are some new sheriffs in town.

Courtesy of TPM:

Former Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords, makes this week's TIME cover as a "Gunfighter," the Tuscon Sentinel reports. Also included are Vice President Joe Biden and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

You know if I were the NRA I would be in a blind panic about now.

They might be able to defend themselves from the likes of Bloomberg and Biden, but no way can they deal with what Gabby Giffords brings to this debate.

With the garbage they have been putting out in the media, they are definitely in a blind panic. I hope they keep putting it out there because to sane people they are looking more and more deranged.

I sure wish the inauguration was over, it is so scarey that this confrontation on gun laws is happening before this weekend. It is hard to imagine living in one of those crazy states...Obama's 2nd term is shaping up to really be a game changer. The congress showing their hatred of the NE with the Sandy relief, now gun laws and we haven't even dealt with the debt ceiling. The NRA is for the gun makers, and I think they are done..now all the members need to make their voices heard.

Beautiful cover. Sarah has to be steaming. Tina, Julianne, Gabby, Hillary, Game Change, etc. are getting the highest praises for their work. What can she do? She will not touch this cover with Gabby on it. I think Sarah is being silent because she is being investigated for something. Oh, but she will have one of her aides comment.

How likely is it Sarah Palin wants to answer questions about Dairy Gate from Federal authorities? Is there any possibility she would be at her house next to the Best Western Motel? Or has she made herself scarce at an eating disorder/drug abuse clinic? Palin the untouchable.

BTW, has anyone seen Todd lately? How is his investigation going?

Love this cover! WTG Times Magazine.

O/T - but what the hell is going on with all the people who now believe, yes BELIEVE, that the shooting at Sandy Hook School was staged and never happened at all. It was just so President Obama could implement some gun control rules. WTF? It is hard to believe that people are really, truly that stupid!

I'm always amazed at the conspiracy theories that float after a crisis such as this occurs. This isnt any different than the nutjobs who purported that Bush staged 9/11 so that he could start a war.

Sadly, the three on the cover of the mag can't stop gun violence. It's part of the fabric of this society. What they CAN do is bring some sanity to the table in the discussions of how we, as a nation, address not only guns but mental health parity. I DO believe that the NRA is quickly losing it's edge in this debate and having Gabby and her husband front and center leading the discussion makes it far more likely that more Americans will begin to reject the NRA scare tactics and absurd solutions to gun violence (teachers packing heat...really?)

      Sheesh

Seriously 10:11. As just ONE example, the retired shrink(?) who protected the six children he found on his driveway is getting threats, harassing telephone calls, hang-ups and all sorts of problems. Yes, the crazies are really out there. And they are attacking the entire town - as if the town doesn't have enough grief!

Palin was a charismatic leader at the time of the Tucson massacre. Ignorance of inciting rhetoric or visuals are not a pass when the accumulation of war chants end up in death. I don't think Sarah and the enablers are ignorant of jacking up people and crowds, but even if they were that stupid it does not give them free range to be irresponsible. Irresponsible leaders are the worst. Palin knows there are crazy people that get motivated by attacks on political adversaries. Whether a nut hears about something 2nd or 3rd hand the leaders of a movement have responsibility for the climate they create. The 9 year-old child, Christina Taylor Green, is one who cuts deeply into the heart for most people. Not a word about the child or the pain caused from the self centered Sarah. Palin's disconnect is a significant sign of culpability.

Palin was a dumb, vicious paid hack that's job was to turn on and arouse all kinds of people for all kinds of things. Her direct target of Gabby Giffords is on her no matter what excuses she or anyone else comes up with.

If Palin was so proud of her work, why did she take so long to do the worst response to the massacre and death of innocent people? The way she responded was something someone that realized their plans were skewed would respond. A typical sociopath always turns to a poor me victim-hood routine, as did Sarah Palin with blood libel. Everything she did or does puts the responsibility of death and destruction on her. The few enablers she has left it is the same. Karma will be a bitch.

Your folly knows no bounds, I see. Enough with the empty rhetoric. Demonstrate how Palin directly influenced Jared Loughner in his attempt to shoot Giffords. Use some evidence this time, if it is not too much to ask from someone of such feeble cognitive abilities. But you can't. No one has. Only someone possessed of an utterly irrational hate could believe such an irrational notion.

What I find amazing is that Miss 'I love guns' hasn't said anything about this debate, at all. I would have thought she would be front and center on screaming about the 2nd amendment and tyranny and founding fathers, blah, blah, blah, Obama, blah, blah. But not a peep. I'm finding it more and more likely that Fox kicked her to the curb and she's balled up in a fetal position trying to figure out what went so wrong. It was the 'Blood Libel' video that cooked her goose, all of her own clueless doing. I like how she is just drifting into utter obscurity, and rightfully so.

President Obama Knows How To Win Assault Weapons Fight: Make Them Vote

..Republicans like Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) are among the chorus of lawmakers who insist that, despite overwhelming public support, an assault weapons ban can’t pass in this Congress. While Reid couches his objection in pragmatism, even McCain doesn’t come out and say he would vote against such a measure. The pre-Newtown Congress was a hostile place for gun regulations, but there really is no way to know how that tragedy affected the hearts and minds of the few dozen legislators who could swing things around for an assault weapons ban.

More than that, though, there is no way for legislators to know just how friendly the post-Newtown world will be to people who vote against reasonable, popularly-supported gun laws, and many of them would rather not find out.

The President knows this, and said so yesterday. He addressed a young girl onstage, named Julia, who asked him to “please try very hard” to pass laws that would make her safer.

“Julia, I will try very hard,” the President said, adding “But she’s right. The most important changes we can make depend on congressional action. They need to bring these proposals up for a vote, and the American people need to make sure that they do.”

Then, President Obama explained why merely forcing Congress to vote is so important. “Get them on record,” he said. “Ask your member of Congress if they support universal background checks to keep guns out of the wrong hands. Ask them if they support renewing a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. And if they say no, ask them why not. Ask them what’s more important — doing whatever it takes to get a A grade from the gun lobby that funds their campaigns, or giving parents some peace of mind when they drop their child off for first grade?”

Enter Biden. Speaking at the US Conference Of Mayors meeting in Washington, Biden stood up for the Second Amendment and promised the White House wasn’t going after it. Biden told the tale of his own firearms — “I have a 20 gauge and a 12 gauge shotgun,” he said — and those owned by his family. Taking direct aim at a National Rifle Association criticism of Obama’s push for universal background checks (the group has said background checks would make private guns sales tougher) Biden said the law could be written so there was an exception to background check rules for sales to immediate family members. Besides, he said, people wanting to have a private gun transaction can “take 20 minutes and go to Dick’s Sporting Goods” to get a background check.

This was Biden the hunter, the sportsman, the flag-waving Second Amendment fan. Other parts of the speech talked about mental health and what Biden called “the coarsening of our culture” — the violent video games and entertainment Biden said may be a contributing factor to gun violence — but the main focus was to prove that gun owners have nothing to fear from the White House.

“Let me be absolutely clear, like most Americans I believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms,” Biden said. “I respect our strong tradition of gun ownership and the rights of hunters and sportsmen. There are millions of responsible, law-abiding gun owners in America who cherish their right to bear arms for hunting or sport or protection or collection.”

A love of guns does not have to equal hatred of the White House plan, Biden said.

“I also believe most gun owners agree that we can respect the Second Amendment while keeping an irresponsible law-breaking few from inflicting harm on a massive scale,” he said. “I believe most of them agree that if America worked harder to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, there would be fewer atrocities like the one that occurred in Newtown. That’s what these reforms are designed to do. They are commonsense measures.”
