A week-long Alabama standoff in which a retired trucker held a 5-year-old boy hostage in an underground bunker has ended with the kidnapper dead and the child safe, according to law enforcement.
"FBI Agents safely recovered the child who's been held hostage for nearly a week," FBI Special Agent Steve Richardson said at a news conference.
The agent said negotiations with the suspect Richard Lee Dykes "deteriorated" in the past 24 hours.
"Mr. Dykes was observed holding a gun. At this point the FBI agents fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child," Richardson said.
The boy identified only as Ethan "appears physically unharmed" and is being treated at a hospital, authorities said.
Dykes, 65, is dead, but officials have not yet provided details on how he died.
Is it wrong to hope that he died while suffering significant pain? This man also murdered the school bus driver who tried desperately to protect his passengers from this man, before he took little Ethan off of the bus and down into his bunker with him.
I am sure that all of you, like me, have been following this story and wondering what could make a man do something so horrendous to a small child. Would you believe conservative radio?
This courtesy of our friend Sarah Jones over at Politicususa:
Michael Creel said Dykes kept to himself and listened to a lot of conservative talk radio.
“He was very into what’s going on with the nation and the politics and all the laws being made. The things he didn’t agree with, he would ventilate,” he said.
James Arrington, police chief of the neighboring town of Pinckard, put it differently.
“He’s against the government, starting with Obama on down,” he said.
Dykes also has been arrested for possession of marijuana and neighbors say he once killed a dog with a lead pipe. According to neighbors, he patrols his yard with a flashlight and a firearm, threatening to shoot children who step foot on his property.
Ironically, given his hatred of government, Dykes lives in a FEMA trailer on his rural property.
“I think he’s just a really angry and bitter guy with some anger management issues,” Morris Dees of Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery told the AP. “He is just against everything – the government and his neighbors.”
Against everything. That pretty much sums up the anti-government, Obama hating, conservative mantra.
I am not sure how this man's anti-Obama, anti-government, hatred spilled over onto this little boy's life but the source for it seems relatively easy to ascertain.
Yet another example of the constant Right Wing hatred laced pollination directed to the mentally ill, undereducated low hanging fruit of this country.
Well at least that boy will be going home safely to his parents. It could have been so much worse.
I'm so glad that little boy was rescued. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was 'unharmed', as he will likely suffer a lifetime of post traumatic stress. Hopefully he can get counseling to help deal with the trauma and live a relatively normal life.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Richard Lee Dykes had a screen-name at the Sea O' Pee?
Would not be a bit surprised .
Delete"Conservative talk radio blared." As Popeye would say, "well, blow me down," THERE'S a surprise. Let's hope Ethan receives the psychological care he needs to live a happy and full life.
ReplyDeleteGOD, these people piss me off! Pardon my french.
We're going to see more events with sick fucks driven to extremes by the 24/7 hate-fest of "conservative" media. I just don't see this stopping any time soon. Maybe when enough people have their lives impacted by this crap they'll start to get that it is destructive and stupid. I just don't know how long that's going to take.
ReplyDeleteX2
DeleteThe "conservative" media is a contributing factor to mental instability in this country because of the hate and fear they spew to low intellectual listeners.
DeleteRecent reports show that the ratings for the right wing television shows are dropping. I would imagine that similar radio programs are following the same pattern.
DeleteEither the audience for this type of dangerous garbage is dying off or they're finally realizing that it's all a lot of hyped up crap created specifically to draw in the ignorant and narrow-minded.
Neighbors and officials had described Dykes as a survivalist with "anti-government" views. Oh gee, where have we heard this before.
ReplyDeleteI bet he had a cache of weapons in his "FEMA" trailer.
DeleteOne would have to assume some degree of mental illness. Not to defend his actions by any stretch of the imagination, but his pain was as real as any physical injury. Also, I would not deny that the constant barrage of twisted rhetoric that receptive audiences are bombarded with hourly only fuels the fire. I don;t really have any solutions, but one would think that a concerted effort to make mental health services a priority would be a start. Stating the obvious, I know, but thats all I have. Ex Cat
ReplyDeleteI did read that he was a Vietnam Vet - there are some serious issues in relation to post WWII vets - that have never been addressed. When we stop lauding war and sending our young to fight for unknown causes - some of this might stop.
DeleteLike you, I cannot defend any actions like what happened - but when people are trained in war and guns and then allowed to live in a mini war zone of their own creation, egged on by gun loving wingnuts - horrible things happen.
I'm relieved Ethan is physically safe, he's the one person I was worried most over. What he needs most is plentiful, lots of love, structure, therapy and support.
ReplyDeleteHis captor? All I can say is he died doing what he did best, being a waste of flesh.
I don't wish him pain. From what I read about his behavior in the neighborhood, he was mentally ill, and should have been in a mental facility a long time ago. It was tragic for the traumatized little boy, and it was tragic for a man failed by a very poor mental health system in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. What a shame!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget it was tragic for the poor bus driver who was shot dead.
DeleteNot forgetting the bus driver, just addressing Gryphen's remark that he hope the man suffered before he died. My comment had to do with him apparently needing mental health care and not getting it. It's tragic for ALL involved. I thought that was a given.
DeleteOh, look. Old, white, conservative gun nut does something horrible.
ReplyDeleteIs this really shocking anymore?
And yes, I feel bad for being dulled to the fact that peoples' lives are being taken/endangered, but you just hear so much of this crap coming from the Right that it's hard not to go into sarcastic shock mode sometimes.
It was Obama' fault! Those redneck ignoramouses have a way to frame everything.
ReplyDeleteHis brains were probably pickled by the FEMA trailer formaldehyde. I don't wish him any additional pain either. Gryphen, why call for pain and suffering on someone who is clearly ill. Will this deter anyone from these sort of actions or will it just add more suffering and pain on top of what is already there. Pain and suffering doesn't change these people, they likely know all about that. Quite the opposite is often needed to change that trajectory.
