Gabby Giffords is in Alaska.

Courtesy of ADN:

Former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, are heading to Anchorage to meet with gun owners and put pressure on Sens. Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski to support expanded background checks for gun buyers.

Giffords is the Arizona Democrat who survived an assassination attempt at a 2011 meet-and-greet in Tucson. Earlier this year, in response to the December school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn., she and Kelly founded a gun violence prevention group called Americans for Responsible Solutions. They are calling this summer's trek the "Rights and Responsibilities" tour.

The two are flying into key states whose senators voted against expanding background checks.

Begich is one of four Democrats who broke party ranks and voted against a watered-down bill in April, drawing proponents' ire. He has said the expanded background checks don't make sense for Alaska, especially in rural areas where gun sellers may not have access to high-speed Internet.

"Senator Begich and Senator Murkowski are independent leaders who put aside special interests to advocate for Alaska," Kelly said in a written statement. "They have the same opportunity when it comes to promoting responsible gun ownership. By supporting responsible policies like background checks, they can forge a middle path that makes their communities safer and protects the rights and traditions that are important to Alaskans."

Giffords and Kelly were scheduled to arrive in Anchorage Monday evening. They are visiting a shooting range and holding a roundtable with a small group of gun owners on Tuesday morning. They plan to talk with news reporters mid-day.

Gee I wonder if a certain big mouth 2nd Amendment blowhard will show up to apologize?

Yeah, somehow I doubt it as well.

She'll not retreat! She'll not go with the flow and be a dead fish! She'll advance in a different direction with her snark, the viper.

Go Gabby! It seems she is fighting for gun control just as hard as she fought for her life. What a great extraordinary couple they make. There is no better example of good vs evil.

We all know how Sarah treats distinguished visitors!

Palin says she might try to sweeten up McGinniss with some "homemade blueberry pie tomorrow so he'll know how friendly Alaskans are."

Only, Sarah painted over Gabby's district with a "Surveyor's Mark" instead of a poisoned pastry.

I'll bet Gabby's a better shot with her less dominant hand (she can't shoot with her right hand anymore) than Sarah is for her fully loaded, scoped and hand-held set-up any day.

Well then, Sarah would still want to one up her and go to Synagogue with her big honkin Star of David pendant.

Sarah Palin is terrified by strong women like Gabby Giffords and Wendy Davis. Palin must shrink when she thinks of authentic females that are truly politicians and not branded fakes like her.

Can Palin even speak their names? I don't recall where she said the name of either woman.

Palin did mention a Starbuck's cup with a Madeleine Albright quote... Mrs. Word Salad gets everything wrong

Albright did not say "support" she said "help". And she helped Sarah to know what she meant if you care about women help them by voting Obama/Biden. Did Palin rectify her mistake? Never.

Mrs. Giffords is just spitting in the wind up here. Neither Murkowski or Begich are going to give her a second's thought. The only constituents they will heed are the ones putting large dollar amounts into their campaigns.

True, but it speaks volumes to Gabby's character and commitment. A weaker person would have thrown her arms in the air and not bothered even trying while having a pity party. (I can think of one from Wasilla off the top of my head)

      Not Gabby.

A website launched by a top Democratic donor aimed at blunting the National Rifle Association is beginning to take shape, with one feature launched Monday highlighting the pro-gun lobby's diminished influence in last year's elections.

StopTheNRA.com, launched last month by venture capitalist Kenneth Lerer, has commissioned a report from political analysts Doug Schoen and James Farwell. Their findings will be released throughout the course of the summer, concluding with the full publication in September.

The first release details the dismal showing of 2012 U.S. Senate candidates with strong grades from the NRA. In the 26 Senate races wherein the NRA rated the candidates, the research showed, the 20 candidates with lower ratings than their opponents won.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly. I'm sure we've all been through some rough patches and road bumps in life and the courage and grace Gabby has shown from the beginning and the support, encouragement and love Mark has given her have been exemplary and should inspire us all. This trip may not be fruitful, but at least they're not backing down, playing the victim and whining.
They're doing this for our kids, for us and for the world.
