For non-theists this is pretty much the Bible in a nutshell.

I recently posted that according to Biblical scholar Reza Aslan the Bible is meant to be read as an allegory, but also that it really only makes sense to the believer.

To those of us not in that camp things like talking snakes, surviving in a whale's stomach for three days, or people living to be hundreds of years old is simply a non-starter.

For that reason taking any moral lessons from a book which is filled to the brim with obvious fabrications seems ridiculous.

      Well, yes and no.

It IS their bible, but only because all the bibles pretty much say exactly that.

I pray, but my faith in the power of my prayer is being challenged by the growing impact of fundie influence in politics, especially at the state and local level.

    It's a short, simple prayer:

"Dear God, please protect me from those who believe in you."

Anon @ 6:33 if I were to pray, it would sound like this:

"May God whoever She may be, protect us from fanatics of all stripes".

Whenever I have been pushed too far, I cite this equal-opportunity offender. It usually ends the conversation.

The Quest to Turn the U.S. Military into the Army of God

Mikey Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) combats fundamentalist Christian control of our nation’s military every day. The rot of Christian nationalism is widespread. Soldiers who do not jump on the Jesus bandwagon are persecuted.

For his troubles, for defending religious freedom, he is dubbed “Field General of the Godless Armies of Satan” and inundated with hate mail. Because that’s what Jesus told his followers to do: don’t turn the other cheek or love your enemies, but write hate mail.

Bad enough our military has been put in the role of playing religious crusaders in the Middle East. The situation in our military is anything but friendly to atheists and non-Christian religionists. Fundamentalists men and women in the military feel their duty to “spread the Gospel” is more important than the Constitution, and they have widespread support from their superiors. Thousands of soldiers have been pressured by their commanding officers to convert to Christianity.

    MRFF tells us,

The evangelicalization of the military, especially among the higher ranks, is a great danger to our country and to the men and women serving who don't follow that radical movement.

Weinstein and the MRFF are performing a critical service in fighting this infection and in keeping the public informed.

You gotta admit, turning water into wine would make one heck of a party trick! I know of one woman I'd love to see turn into a salt lick, also too!

  7. Ok, legit question:
How is the bible any more or less ridiculous than Aesop's Fables?
