This kind of thing just makes me sick to my stomach.
The idea that this young woman would throw away her dreams simply due to superstitious nonsense is ridiculous.
Not only that the number 666 is not even the real number of the beast.
Remind me someday to relate the story of the born again Christian girl in my self defense class who quit because I talked about focusing Chi. That was a real eye opener.

You know this child is not thinking for herself. She is already being brainwashed by religious fanatics. Her future looks dim. Sad.
ReplyDeleteOh fer goodness' sake - give her a different number.
ReplyDeleteWhy make things more difficult than they have to be.
Yes, she's a superstitious idiot - so give her a different number.
JEEZ, people.
+1
DeleteGive her another number? Causing more work for the race administrator? Then, does everyone get to trade for their favorite numbers?
DeleteJEEZ, no thanks.
@Randall : "Why make things more difficult [...] for superstitious idiots"
DeleteSo this superstitious idiot wants to make the organizers' job more difficult than it has to be, and you want the organizers to bend over to her whims, just because she's the idiot and they are not ?
Do you fail to see why it's suicidal for a society to decide to reward idiocy ?
Nope. Superstitious gobbledygook should never be catered to over the age of say, 5 or 6. It leads to all sorts of societal problems. What if she would only compete if she has the number 001. see the problem?
DeleteWhy open her up to ridicule and bullying by her equally ignorant classmates? Give her a different number.
DeleteClueless twit! Brainwashed into thinking that evil is a number when clearly it resides in people and their actions. I find so called "Christians" tend to be the worst offenders.
ReplyDeleteWow, glad she did not get a chance to change the number based on her stupidity. She clearly is too brainwashed to participate in a sport.
But she will vote.
DeleteI'm a Christian and I shook my head when I read this. This is so stupid and theologically unsound.
ReplyDeleteSpeechless.
ReplyDeleteKind of like not wanting to get off the elevator on the 13th floor. Wait...
I'm happy to see people like this suffering and disappointed, and I'm glad the race officials didn't honor her request. The more fanatical, stupid Christians are put in their place in this culture, the better. What a complete, utter moron. Go play with your imaginary friend Jesus, honey. The rest of us will be running track and leaving you behind.
ReplyDeleteI see no harm in letting her switch numbers. Yeah, it's a dumb reason, but let's face it, it's better than a media storm. It's always better to steer clear of controversy over something this small. It's a number, but if it bothers a runner that much, and your organization is to support runners, help them do their best--it seems like letting her trade serves that goal more than making drop out.
DeleteWhen I moved to Alaska in 2002, we went to get our new plates, and the lady at the DMV said because they're issued sequentially, they had a plate printed with DVL-666. They decided not to issue it. Why ask for problems especially over very small things? They're distracting, and cost time and money.
Yes, I think it's silly the girl dropped out over bad theology, but it seems counter to the mission of the organization to let her drop out over it. Just give her a new number and move on. TBH, it would have been smarter to not try to issue it at all.
No, it isn't. highlight the stoopid and show that it won't be tolerated in this society. be superstitious all you want in your home and church. In society at large, you play by the rules that all society can see as reasonable - which by definition excludes superstitions.
Deleteotherwise, imagine the kind of exemption that would need to be made - no competition on Sundays for the Christers and non on Saturday for the Orthodox Jews - ooops - no competitions. Or. we could just ignore the religious nuts and have it on the weekends day that makes sense and the venue is available.
Well, if all you care about is making yourself feel good, I guess that's your solution. "Boy, we showed that silly girl! Ha ha!" and go off back-slapping your friends who are also enjoying her distress.
DeleteI see no high ground there. It was a freaking piece of paper for a race. That's the only argument I'm making. Switch the number.
When Sarah played HS basketball, her jersey number was 666.
ReplyDeleteHMMMMM......The ZIP CODE for the Capitol of Brownbackistan is 66601. It is also the home of Westboro Baptist and the Phelps Clan. Could there be something to this magic number stuff?
ReplyDeleteRJ
And Pat Robertson is president? (wink)
DeleteWhy do I find fundie teenagers so annoying.
ReplyDeleteFear and ignorance; a terrible thing to see no matter what the age.
ReplyDeleteFear, ignorance and teenage energy and obsession - bad combination. Ever read about the girls of Toledo (spain) who sought suicide for martyrdom?
DeleteSimply apply the sheet to read 999... ta-da there problem solved.
ReplyDeleteWell, unless of course she isn't a fan of Hogans Hero's than I got nothing.
After Ronald Raygun left office, his rich friends bought him a house to live in. However, the address of the house was 666. Not a problem: they had it changed to a different number. In Reagan's case, however, a good argument for he being anti-Christ can be made.
ReplyDeleteThe official position of the social Security Administration is that objecting to a 666 sequence in one's social Security number is one of the very few reasons why a different number may be issued. However, the 2 numbers will be nevertheless linked.
thus there is a precedent for switching bib numbers. Race officials claim had she complained earlier it could have been switched. The real question I have, was she a competitive runner? What were her other finish places like? or was she merely attracting Palinesque attention?
Pin the number on upside down. STFU and run.
ReplyDeleteThat would have required intelligence and a sense of humor.
DeleteCourses not taught in Xtrian homeschooling.
DeleteO/T, but here's a question: Would any of us have done the same?

The Eerie Thought About God That The Inventor Of The Nuclear Bomb Had When It Went Off

I would say give her another number. I coached and ran track meets and getting another number is no big deal.. I think the 666 thing is overblown by religion but there are bigger issues.
ReplyDeleteI know of people not allowing a transfusion because of their religion and dieing leaving behind children. Following Religious Doctrine can be deadly and sadly I have seen it happen.
My aunt, who I loved dearly, allowed herself to die because she was a JW. A transfusion would have saved her life. Argghh!!!
DeleteFor heaven's sake . . . when was the last time anyone saw a 13th floor or 13th avenue? Just give her a different number and move on.
ReplyDeleteAll high enough European buildings have a 13th floor.
DeleteThe superstition is about "being 13 sitting at the same table while eating". Buildings or avenues have nothing to do wth it.
Except in the USA.
Race officials say they were never approached and they would have let her change numbers, this whole thing is contrived and a sham.
ReplyDeleteAnd as we know, a fundie would never ever lie... unless it's to engineer an occasion to claim martyrhood !
DeleteI read the article you attached to your post about the number 666 not being the 'real' number. In the beginning, the article talks about why 616 is the number but the author then refutes that claim and brings back 666. Either case, it's all ridiculous. *cough* Prince Charles... LOL~
