New book about Purity Balls attempts to defend and legitimize the practice. Yeah, good luck with that.

So the book by David Magnusson, called simply "Purity" contains photographs of fathers standing with their daughters in the kind of poses that would make the hair on Chris Hansen's stand straight up, and an explanation from the author about why our perceptions are all wrong.

Here is a taste:

“When I first heard about the Purity Balls I imagined American fathers terrified of anything that might hurt their daughters or their families honor. But as I learnt more, I understood that the fathers, like all parents, simply wanted to protect the ones that they love – in the best way they know how. It was also often the girls themselves that had taken the initiative to attend the balls. They had made their decisions out of their own conviction and faith, in many cases with fathers who didn’t know what a Purity Ball was before first being invited by their daughters.

The more I learned, the more I was surprised that I had been so quick to judge people I knew so little about. I was struck by the idea that what set us apart wasn’t anything more than how we had been influenced by the culture we grew up in and the values it had instilled in us. In Purity I wanted to create portraits so beautiful that the girls and their fathers could be proud of the pictures in the same way they are proud of their decisions – while someone from a different background might see an entirely different story in the very same photographs.

To me, Purity is about how we are shaped by the society in which we grow up and how we interpret the world through the values we incorporate as our own.”

Uh huh. Well I guess you can blame my background but I am not picking up anything sweet, or nurturing from the photos.

And what I am picking up is more about obsessive control and an unnatural interest in a young girl's sexuality. Must be my background.

Latent incest personified. Truly, those pictures are just fucking creepy. Bad enough without the desaturation/over-exposed look to make everything look white and "angelic."

While not overtly sexual, I do think many of the poses are totally inappropriate. The dads, and some of the daughters, look like they are standing with their older lovers and not their fathers. I know MY husband has never posed like that with either of our beautiful daughters! Sorry, but the ICK factor is clearly there for me.

My dad took me out to dinner when I was 16 at a nice downtown restaurant. Just him and me. I thought it was CREEPY.
Turns out it was a ruse for the surprise party that they had waiting at home for me.
But it felt weird, my dad saying he was taking me out as 16 is a milestone, yada yada, People at other tables wondering what the hell was going on with this guy and this young girl.
Some things just do not belong together: Dad and daughter proms are one of them. Especially one focusing on the daughter's ........cherry......gross!!!

I find it sad that you thought going out to dinner with your dad was creepy...that you ascribe negative thoughts about a girl having dinner at a restaurant with her father to other customers who probably weren't paying much if any attention to you at all. To conflate a father/daughter dinner out, with a father/daughter DANCE, IMO indicates that you are the one with the problem.

Families typically do EAT OUT together at restaurants. People do have to eat; it's normal. Families typically DON'T get dressed up and go dancing together where the emphasis is on the daughters' "purity." That's NOT normal.

Although I agree that the purity balls are creepy, YOUR post made me very sad. I had a wonderful close relationship with my dad and had many wonderful times with just him. Nothing anything icky or gross. My own daughter also has a great relationship with her dad. He even took her prom dress shopping. I'm sure you'd find that weird. I found it sweet.

    3. From the time our granddaughter was 7, her grandfather has taken her out to dinner to celebrate her birthday every year. It's a special occasion for just the two of them. They both enjoy it. She's 19 now.

I find it very creepy that instead of having dinner with Dad you were on a date of some type with him. I would have been creeped out also.

Is it dinner out with Grandpa or is it a "date" for her? If it is the latter I would suggest calling the local sheriffs.

OP here. Chill out people. My relationship with my dad is fine. It was creepy at 16 to go to an inimate setting for dinner when prior to that we'd been to family dinners or dad and kids at McDonalds. I'm trying to give you a 16 y/o perspective to see if these girls might feel the same way.
12"59 let me explain the setting: a small intimate returant ob a boat on a river. Other table sitters were looking at us, My dad kept telling the waiter I was a daughter out for 16th birthday. I think my dad agreed he chose the wrong restaurant for a dad daughter night out.
I'm sorry people can't appreciate the connection I was trying to make and my feelings as a 16 year old..

6:53 am, I'm sorry, but not all 16 year olds are creeped out by having dinner at a nice restaurant with their Dad. It's not a sexual thing for heavens sakes! It's DINNER.

‘Christian’ Homeschool Dads Get Girl Kicked Out of Prom Because They Can’t Stop Lusting After Her

With all the talk of the ‘Christian’ world’s incredibly creepy purity balls, in which fathers “marry” their daughters in order to take charge of their hymens–which also produce some ‘Why-Don’t-You-Take-A-Seat-Over-There“-caliber photo opportunities–it’s really not surprising that a bunch of old men at a Christian prom just can’t control themselves when confronted with the sweet, sweet booty of a seventeen-year-old attendee.

Nonsense. Studies show that those who have abstinence ed and make pledges like this are just as likely to have premarital sex and just as soon. The only difference is they are likely to have unprotected sex. My guess is they are also more likely to then seek out abortions wherever and however. I also guess the psychological damage is pretty horrific.

These photos suggest that those dear old (loony Xtian) Dads have absolutely NO respect for their daughters...the girls are just objects that exist to validate HIM, whether through "this is mine and you can't have it" to something, uh, a whole lot worse. I've always gotten that "need a shower" feeling when I hear this discussed, especially when I watched the trailer for the documentary. This verges on pedophilia that's "approved" with a wink and a nod, whether consummated (yeesh!) or not.

  19. If they were just standing next to each other with big old happy smiles, heading off to the annual school father-daughter dance, it wouldn't be so bad.

But they are posed like lovers, like a boy and his girl heading off to prom. They are not. They are a father and daughter heading off to a dance celebrating the father's involvement in his daughter's sexuality.

Very creepy and unhealthy in my opinion.

Great question! Maybe it boils down to that the females are the ones who actually get pregnant. The old double standard. However I cringe thinking of what a mother-son purity ball would be like.

It's called the Manhood Ceremony where boys are presented with a sword. Not a gun. The boys are invited to "watch" at the purity ball so by example they can learn how to treat women by seeing how fathers treat their daughters.

Some lines shouldn't be crossed. These girls are vowing to keep themselves pure under the watchful eyes of their daddies and with their mom's approval. The simple act of asking a girl to get all gussied up, get a ring from daddy, and pledge her purity is emotional abuse and totally uncalled for.
The proper thing to do is to wave your hands on the bottom step and chant "No Boys", right Sarah?
Sex education is key. The girls need to know what's happening to their bodies and those of boys when hormones kick in. They need to know where babies come from and how to avoid becoming pregnant.

What is the punishment for breaking your dad's purity balls? Will he love you less? Force you to have a baby? Where in the Bible are purity balls mentioned?
