Woman playfully slaps man, he shoots her dead. Just another day in the NRA's America.

Courtesy of The Florida Times-Union:

A Clay County man was arrested early Saturday on manslaughter charges after allegedly shooting a woman to death after she jokingly slapped him across the face.

Elliott William Orsborn, 26, is accused of shooting Jamie Lee Martin, 26, in the head after a night of friendly drinking at Martin's home at 2041 Ashton Street in Middleburg, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses told authorities Martin, Orsborn and several other friends had been hanging out in the garage throughout the night while Martin's two children slept in the house, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Orsborn had flashed his silver .22 revolver with electrical tape wrapped around the handle several times and kept playing around with it.

The gun wasn't loaded earlier in the night because Orsborn took all the bullets out, the Sheriff’s Office said.

As the night went on and the group drank more, Martin and Orsborn were sitting at a table talking when Martin said something Orsborn didn't like. Witnesses said Gavin Lamberth, Martin's boyfriend of about 5 months who lives with her and her children, told Orsborn to "just chill."

Then, Martin "jokingly slapped the defendant across the face."

Witnesses told authorities Orsborn pulled his gun out of his shorts pocket, pointed it at Martin's forehead and shot her, the Sheriff’s Office said.

You know perhaps times have changed, but I was raised to never strike back at a woman even if she was pummeling you with both fists, much less pull a gun and take her life.

Is this what living in a "gun culture" ultimately leads to?

So now we shoot teenagers in their cars for playing loud music, kill seventeen year olds on their way home from the store with a iced tea and Skittles, and shoot women in the face for slapping us with an open hand?

What in the hell happened to us?

Bristol Palin is very lucky that the Alaskan man who hosted the party didn't shoot Bristol for assaulting him in the face.

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if it occurred to Sarah too. Well, probably not.

Track is lucky that nobody has shot him yet. And I guess, considering his behavior and substance use, others are lucky he hasn't killed anyone yet.

I read some interesting articles and academic papers about why there's been an increase in mass shootings. Apparently, there were 1 or 2 per decade until the 1980's, when they shot up, including the infamous "going postal" episodes which started in the mid 80s.

The theory is that they can be blamed on "Saint" Reagan, who started his presidency by firing all the striking air traffic controllers, attacking teachers and unions. While he was gutting worker's rights, he was opening up the floodgates to shipping American jobs overseas. While decimating workers and jobs, he was taking away mental health funding and encouraging gun ownership. Voila: pissed off men with no job, poor education, no mental health care, and a gun.

Bingo, but add one more point: that was when the gun culture began to be glorified. After all, Reagan relished his image as America's cowboy. The night John Wayne died, June 11, 1979, I called out to my husband that Wayne's death, Ronald Reagan would be the next president. At that time, Reagan was considered an intellectual lightweight, and laughed at as being little more than a class B actor. But I knew/felt very strongly/believed that America was desperate for a gun culture, chest-thumping male hero/icon, and that once Wayne was dead, Reagan would be called up, and set up, to fill the bill. And he was.

Unfortunately, I think it is. Don't all those Open Carry people in Texass want everyone to get used to seeing guns everywhere?

My parents left Europe to emigrate here after World War II. They taught us "Never let your passports expire: you never know when you'll have to leave in a hurry." I always thought they were a little too paranoid (though I never let mine expire).
I never made it a big deal with my kids. But the more I see with regard to guns and the mentality of RWNJs, the more I think I should encourage them to emigrate. I don't want my grandkids growing up in a society where everyone is comfortable with guns.

  7. Thank a Culture of Fear perpetrated by a political party & media that incites, encourages and excuses revenge, endless wars abroad and crippling economic inequality at home: that any slight against your self, your tribe, your pride, your beliefs or your wealth, demands reprisal -- with the use of force.
If, after 9/11, nothing had been done but a soul-searching at what brought this hatred of America, how different life in America (and rest of the world) may have been.
    Is change possible?
Not until we hit bottom -- when the government (at every level)
is bought by the Koch Bros, et al. That may wake us up.

We are sleepwalking into a hell of our own making. VOTE! Prove that money can't buy everything.

And it was manslaughter? He put the gun to her forehead and pulled the trigger. That seems pretty deliberate to me. I'm willing to bet that he knew there was at least one bullet in the chamber.
Pretending otherwise gives him a great alibi. We sure give white men the benefit of the doubt in this country!

I doubt it was a conspiracy. More believeable that he was just another example of an arrogant, overconfident, imbecilic gun fetishist. Prolly the kind of asshole who'd wiggle his trigger finger at you if you asked him where the safety is.

All these idiots should have the phrase: "I THOUGHT IT WAS UNLOADED" and the birth/death date of the person they killed tattooed in thick black letters across their stupid faces so at least they can spread some awareness to other potential "responsible gun owners" before they reach the Peter Principle of their gun competence.

Not to blame the victim, but how stupid do you have to be to continue to drink with a guy who was playing with a gun earlier in the evening while your children slept close by?

I've had a conversation with my children that if they are at a friend's house and see a gun left out or anywhere unsecured (i.e., not locked up in a gun cabinet), they are to immediately tell an adult and have them call me to pick them up.

This woman failed her children by knowingly associating with a drunken, armed maniac.

(that's not to say that the drunken, armed maniac isn't completely to blame for killing her)

It's not just that these events have occurred, but that there is also a predictable segment of the population which will argue the victim had it coming.

All this proves is that the young woman should have been carrying her own gun. With a bit of training and practice she might have been able to out drawn the guy and put a couple of holes in him first.

While reading it, I thought the "accident" excuse would come up, but apparently this Ammosexual was intent on killing this woman for the horrible offense of a playful slap.
The next time I wish Florida would secede from the union, too many crazies getting away with murder, giving copy cats crazy ideas. Wonder what his punishment is for getting kneed in the groin?

We got single mothers punching out elders who throw parties, we have racial crimes done by quasi (in his mind) condo cops, Florida's supposed to be home of "the happiest place in the world"????? No thanks, I'll pass.

Florida has been on my "never will visit" list for years but became the no. 1 on that list after the Trayvon Martin travesty. We have friends who are trying to cajole us to visit them in Florida where they'll winter this year. No way.

There is no excuse for murder....but...I have to say...there is no such thing as a "playful" openhanded slap to the face either.

She pissed off the wrong person because she was stupid. Darwins law.

  18. And shoot defenseless African-American teen walking down the damn street or in a freaking Walmart Store.

But won't even aim at or muss the feathers of:
white boys walking down the street with known assault weapons.
or white sniper aiming known assault weapons at federal officials
or white people walking around with known assault weapons in your favorite public, open, suppossed-to-be-relaxed businesses.
