Another day another video of a black man being gunned down by the police. This time in South Carolina.

Courtesy of the Daily Beast:

Walter Scott’s death at the hands of a cop captured on video is a nightmarish combination of the killings of other black men by white police from Ferguson to Staten Island and beyond.

Like Eric Garner, who was choked to death for selling illegal cigarettes, Scott’s fatal encounter with Patrolman Michael Slager came as a result of a petty offense: a dead brake light on Scott’s car.

Like Michael Brown, Scott was unarmed and was dozens of feet away from the police officer when he was shot to death.

Like the cops in almost every “officer-involved shooting,” Slager said he feared for his life.

Unlike all of those incidents, there is a video that undeniably shows a man who did nothing to warrant the eight shots in the back he took from Slager’s gun.

The officer, Michale Slager, has now been charged with murder, and with this video as evidence, might actually be convicted.

This story broke late the in the afternoon, and when I saw it I immediately thought "Well here we go again."

I watched Chris Hayes last night who wondered out loud whether or not THIS police officer would have ultimately filed his police report and gone on with his life, if there had NOT been video that demonstrated that he lied about the shooting.

And he further wondered just how many unjustified police shootings of black men in this country take place with nobody ever being the wiser.

I have to admit as a white man growing up so far from places where this kind of thing takes place, I have often believed that the black community exaggerated their fear of the police.

Well I have to tell you these videos lately have convinced me that if anything the black community has minimized the threat.

And let me guess, the first thing that's gonna happen is a wave of conservatives proposing bills that make it illegal to video the police...

Screw Republicans/conservatives! They can make videos illegal as Hell and many will still be on alert to film the cops in their wrong doings! (to include me)

The cops throughout our nation should not be allowed to get away with their racists ways! We know they are a racist group and it's been proven time and time again throughout the USA.

Their racism and lying ways need to be stopped NOW!

It is legal to video and audio the police. The next thing to happen is the " GoFundMe" to pay his legal fees along with police union funds....protection...for the protectors.. FUCK THOSE PIGS..

We have horribly racist cops and they are nationwide. Alaska has them in regard to natives (and probably others!)and the south and other areas as to black, brown and Asian folks.

You could not get me to call a cop for help. Don't trust them as far as I can throw them! And, I hate the fact I'm having to pay for them!

The cops lie and protect each other and they are known to be horrible to their wives (beatings!) - have two friends that divorced their husbands/cops and it was a nightmare for each of them! Thank God they are out of those relationships!

I teach college in Georgia. Many of my black male students have horror stories about police harassment. I grew up out west, and while there was certainly racism toward the Latino and Native populations, nothing prepared me for living in the South.

    Gryphen,
He did file the police report and if you watched the whole video he also tried to "set up" the crime scene by throwing his taser down by the body. The man with the video did NOT come forward until after it was swept under the rug by the cop and the police dept.

This isnt going to stop until white people demand that this can not be done in our name any longer.

We'll probably never know what caused this man to run after being stopped for a minor vehicle violation but the video pretty clearly shows a summary street execution by a so-called 'law enforcement officer'. What else can you call it?

Which ever jurisdiction handles this prosecution better be up to the task because another suspect acquittal ain't gonna fly.

Bright YELLOW TASER clearly visible in the video. The FACT that he walked away from the man after he shot him, cuffed him, and left him to die to walk back to pick up the Taser is telling...then chuck/drop it in front of the other officer next to the body. TRUST NO ONE...

The taser looked yellow on Rachel Maddow last night. He clearly chucks something on the ground that he walked back and picked up before the other cop arrived. Then he picks it up again? Can you say tampering with evidence?

Gryphen - I just read an update here at cbcnews.ca that the officer in question has been fired and has been charged with murder. The lawyer he retained after the incident excused himself when the video surfaced. It clearly shows a contradiction to the officer's original story. It is high fuckin' time these trigger-happy idiots on power trips are called out for the cowards they are!

Please forgive what I fear is certain to be a truly stupid white person's question but I promise you it IS genuine: in your opinion, have incidents like this increased in number over the years or is it just the advent of capturing them on video that's making them seem so disgustingly 'commonplace'?

See, I grew up in all-white suburbia heaped with entitlement, however, living for the past decade in an 80% African-American neighborhood has been a very shaming and horrifying eye-opener.

But now, all these videos ... ! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!!

If I tried to put into words my shock and, again, the only word for it is SHAME that I feel as a white person because of this epidemic of lethal, unpunished racism, I'd likely succeed only in sounding even MORE ignorant. (And just to be clear, that's not intended to make MY emotions more important than the hideous death toll ...)

How many MORE unarmed African-American men will have to be gunned down in cold blood by police who go entirely unpunished before white people GET IT?!

(Sorry, that last is just a RHETORICAL truly stupid white person question.)

      @11:39 am
They haven't increased at all, they are just getting caught on video. And it's not just black men, it'
s black women, Hispanic people's, Native American people's, every minority. It happens in every state and in every town in this country. Minorities are harassed and treated as second hand citizens.
And Gryphen and other IMers. My original comment was not meant to be rude in any way at all. It's just that this blatant type of racism has been going on and on that anyone who would have thought about it for 5 minutes would know. But like everything in life, it either takes something happening to someone you know or a publicized event to take that 5 minutes to figure it out.
Sadly this is nothing new, and is expected by many minorities.

Many of those who get it DON"T CARE! They have turned a blind eye. I promise you, within days, they will be smearing the victim's memory, and the cop will say that he knew him from before, and he had super powers, etc. White people justified the killing of a 12 year old in cold blood. Do you really think they'll have a problem with this?

So, a 33 year old police officer, in top physical condition, can't chase down a 50 year old overweight man ? Didn't even try a foot pursuit. He just executed this man in cold blood.

And what of the 3 shots that missed ? Thankfully there were no innocent bystanders downrange that were hit.

He never hesitated. He drew his weapon and murdered a fellow citizen as if it was part of his daily routine, like cleaning your weapon and polishing your shoes.

Watch his demeanor. This was just standard operating procedure for this murderer.

Before the video release standard operating procedure, make the victim into a criminal....disgusting:

    ________________________________________________

He has been arrested about 10 times in his lifetime, mostly for failure to appear for court hearings and to pay child support.

The only indicator of violence in his past came with his first arrest in 1987 on an assault and battery charge.

Slager, 33, served honorably in the military before joining the North Charleston Police Department more than five years ago, Aylor said.

He has never been disciplined during his time on the force, the attorney added

In the late 90's, I was a passenger in a brand new BMW driven by my black boyfriend. We were stopped by a police officer, and the first thing he did was lean in across my boyfriend and ask "Are you okay?" I wanted to rip out his throat, but my (very smart) beau just put his hand on mine and calmly asked the officer what the problem was. There was no problem, so we went on our way. He told me that this happened to him, his brother and his father all the time.

  25. I think these incidents are vastly more visible because the general public is shooting video of police encounters with the public. Until all police departments are required to use body cams that cannot be disabled by the individual wearing them, the public should be able to document these encounters legally, for precisely this reason. Unfortunately our police are not doing a good enough job of policing themselves to get rid of the psychopaths hiding behind a badge. Until they step up and do that, the public will watch, and will video them. They will need to get used to it. The whole world is indeed watching.

I've seen and lived this in my city all my life. When I was in high school, four white thug cops were cruising a park, supposedly looking for kids playing hooky from school, smoking pot, having wild sex in the woods, etc. I can tell you with absolute certainty for every one african american, there were at least 20 privileged white teens doing all the stuff they were looking for.
Who's cars got booted or towed from the parking areas? Those owned by blacks. They'd arrest every black person they could get their hand on, and maybe a token white with a criminal record, I know because I was there and saw it.
Today, with all these people carrying cameras, someone finally had the sense to not only film it, but move in closer at critical points to get it all on film.

Whomever you are, Thank You for your courage and for coming forward with it. You're truly a hero. The poor victim's mother, when seeing the film said "That wasn't an animal, that was my son". As a white woman and a mom, I feel her pain and I feel a tinge of guilt because my son has a better chance just because of the color of his skin.
This has got to end somehow, I fear for the next generation if we do nothing.

If that citizen (God bless him), had not recorded this, the killer cop would have gotten away with it, and he knows this. He did not expect to be filmed committing a cold blooded murder.
How many times have killer cops gotten away with murdering Black people and gotten away with it, when no cell phone or video recorder was around? MANY.
These racist cops have also beaten countless Black and Brown men/women to a pulp, and they never got punished for it, because everybody believe every lie that comes out of their mouths. THIS HAS TO STOP!
And their reward is, other racists send them money to make them rich, for killing a Black person.
