Open thread for tonight's Democratic presidential forum hosted by Rachel Maddow.

Courtesy of Mediaite:

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow is set to moderate the network’s only event in the Presidential primary season, a forum from Winthrop University in South Carolina. Deemed the “First in the South Presidential Forum”, tonight’s event will feature frontrunner Hillary Clinton, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.

I have to admit that I am looking forward to this almost more than I am the next Democratic debate.

I am a big fan of Rachel's and I fully expect her to ask tough yet fair questions of the candidates while also providing perhaps a little more showmanship than we have seen on debate stages so far this election cycle.

I think the only thing that might be better than watching Rachel Maddow grill the Democratic candidates, would be watching her grill the Republicans candidates, which I would actually cahnge out of my pajama bottoms and fly across the country to witness in person.

As always you can check my Twitter feed here, and of course I will update this post as things proceed forward. I actually really think it is that he is a socialist like Stalin, instead of a socialist like Lennon. John Lennon that is.

I think Chris Hayes is much better at interviews...better at asking probing follow-up questions and forcing answers. But Maddow has more regular viewers and I'm sure will be well-prepped and will do better than most. Still, I'm not watching and appreciate reading IMers' comments.

I think that it is shameful that in this country that there are starving children. To allow 50% of children to go hungry is uncalled for and everyone in this country needs to step up and donate or help out in some way. And no, I do NOT think that it is crazy that we feed hungry kids. I was typing faster than I could make my comment clear. I work in a school and we have 35% free and reduced lunches which is shameful.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous6:29 PM

While we should feed them basic meals we ALSO need to get to the root cause of their poverty and institute programs the discourage those without the means to properly raise children from having them in the first place. If the kids are starving now it is likely that the parent(s) were financially unable to provide proper prenatal care and nutrition for the mother-to-be so the child likely was likely born with mental and physical problems. A sad cycle but one that can be corrected through education and proper use of birth control.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous7:46 PM

Why? Because those figures are for public schools.
The GOP has made a concerted effort to get white kids into private "academies" or to be home schooled.

That leaves the underclass to be served by poorly funded schools, and those schools are full of children whose parents can't afford enough food for them.

One stop-gap answer: give as much as you can to food banks that can provide food to families during school vacations, summers, over the weekend, when the children won't be getting fed at school, and, therefore, may not be fed much at all.

If you want to be angry at the GOP, start with what they've done to our public education system. They want to destroy our country, and this is the first and best way for them to do it.

In my district, it's 84% who qualify. We have the highest rate of poverty of the 5 biggest districts in the state.

It's heartbreaking to see kids try to hide food in their backpacks so they have something to eat at night or over the weekends.

And it's infuriating to hear Republicans talk about cutting SNAP funding.

    Rachel Maddow Dazzles

...Rachel Maddow’s questions were intelligent, well researched, and went deeper than anything asked during the presidential debates. Maddow didn’t let the Democratic candidates rely on their talking points and stump speeches, and the result was the best 90+ minutes of the televised portion of the early presidential campaign.

The great irony is that Maddow delivered the very kind of forum that the Republican candidates are claiming that they want out of the debates, but all of the Republican presidential candidates are afraid to be interviewed by Maddow.

Rachel and Matthews called out Clinton's lack of truthfulness about being a warhawk. Hillary has said recently that if Iran did anything to Israel, we would obliterate them ......I am sorry, Netanyahu would be the cause of that. Iran is ready to move on into the economic world and someone needs to rein BIBI in.....just like his continued presence with the Palestinians.....he has no intention of a 2 state solution and has said so. Hillary likes Bibi and will support him without question. She is a warhawk and I really dislike the "sexist " label she is doing with sanders about when a woman speaks, some consider it "yelling".....already been known that Bernie has used that description for years about gun control with both sides yelling....it has nothing to do with how Clinton portrays it and it is definitely cheesy and cheap of her to push that. Very disappointed. Plus some reddit user /paid troll by the Clinton campaign has come forth and apologized after quitting his "troll job" because he and others were told to go after sanders on his posts calling him misogynist, old, socialist, angry, and gun lover, etc. He said he got to where he like sanders but the last bit of attack they were to use just turned his stomach.....that this is the democratic party eating their own to push Hillary's selfish grasp for power and that both Rubio and Clinton get a lot of money from the same donor american federation of broadcasters. I am disappointed in the democrats that push for Hillary. We are in the mess not only because of the republicans but also her husband who deregulated the banks.
