23 year old man arrested for setting California mosque on fire. Father blames social media. Is that another name for "Donald Trump?"

Courtesy of Yahoo News:

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of committing a hate crime and arson in connection with a Southern California mosque fire, authorities said Saturday.

Carl James Dial Jr., of Palm Desert, was arrested late Friday and booked for investigation of commission of a hate crime, arson, maliciously setting a fire and burglary, according to a Riverside County sheriff's statement and jail records.

Dial was being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.

The police have not released a motive yet, but young man's father knows just who to blame:

"He was caught up in social media. Social media has produced people like my son, without person-to-person contact," the father said. "I believe he was lacking in social skills."

Yeah darn that social media for causing people to set mosques on fire.

Somehow I doubt that will work as much of a defense.

Sadly, there are lots of parents who refuse to take responsibility for their own failures as parents and refuse to let others blame their children when they screw up royally.

If by that you mean not policing son's internet use when he was a child, try doing so today. They almost all need smart phones, which are often used in the classroom. Textbooks are on line. Assignments are worked on line collaboratively or turned in online. You can't look over their shoulder 24/7. Denying a kid imternet access today is like denying them an enclyclopedia, paper and pencil were 40 years ago.

In Cal they are nothing like Ak church terrorism.

Nancy French is busy playing Bristol Palin and she was right there to write her bullshit, link to the Southern Baptist Convention.

Most important she was selling a book for Sarah Palin.

Here is the title of December 9, 2015 by Bristol Palin propaganda if you want to view it. Not going to link.

Planned Parenthood shooter said he “did it for the babies,” but don’t call him “pro-life”

Remember the PP killer's girlfriend was taken away to hide. They do not treat this terrorist like he was radicalized and his relationship with his partner is mostly ignored.

The Bristol Blog ignored the fact the Wasilla Bible Church was torched by a terrorist (anniversary yesterday). There was a pizza man that was emotional over a Church's tip.

Sandy Hook is anniversary is tomorrow. Is Nancy bold enough to reveal she is with the FAU guy.

I'm sorry but as any parent knows, you don't control your child's actions. Would that I could with my 16 year old. We see young people seduced by terrorists online only to hear their parents express horror at it. (Recent NYT article on this very topic.) I have compassion for the father until hear some reason not to. Pray for peace.

I have known parents whose children have mental illness or drug addictions and I can understand how difficult it can be to control a child who is going down the wrong path.

However, in all of the cases I know, the parents were well aware of the problems and tried repeatedly to find solutions. Sometimes it just doesn't work and the parent is helpless to fix the problem.

What angers me are the parents who are oblivious to the fact their little angel has acquired a cache of guns and bomb-making materials under their own roof, and will insist that dear, sweet Johnny has NEVER done a naughty thing in his life so it MUST be some else's fault.

    4. By 16 it's pretty much too late. Has to happen regularly as they are maturing. It's called teaching Family Values.

But even at 16 my parents were able to control us plenty if we stepped wrong.

      No car.

      No phone.

No TV. (Nowadays that would include computer.)

Restriction or grounding (as in home arrest).

Chore such as grass mowing or dish washing.

These problems either start early and by the time the parents recognize they need to do something it is too late or there is a medical cause which nothing could do anything about (like schizophrenia).

I'll bet this father left all of the child rearing to the wife and neither has any discipline skills so the kids basically did anything they wanted.

I know exactly what this father means. No matter how good a parent one tries to be, as kids grow up they become more and more influenced by the outside world. In some ways this is good and necessary, as it's where they have to live as adults. But the internet has brought both good and bad to us all, and if the kid has not developed good discriminatory skills he/she can be taken in by it, especially if it comes at them at a time when they are trying to establish their own identity separate from their parents. My kids sure went through versions of this (i.e. If mom/dad says it, it is automatically rejected). I am wondering if this guy was the kind of kid who tended to spend inordinate amounts of time online reading all the conspiracy trash out there, as opposed to hanging out with a variety of different kinds of people.

Palm Desert and the entire Coachella Valley WAS a red area for years...Unfortunately, we inherited Mary Bono as our Congressional representative, but things have changed, fortunately.

Palm Desert is not a low economic area just like Palm Springs is not necessarily only a rich area. But there are some areas which tend to house those of lower income levels and the area where the mosque is located might be such an area.

This mosque has been there for close to 2 decades.

I believe it is housed in a former home. So, visually it would not look like mosques you may visit when touring countries or see in National Geographic,.

I had not heard of the person arrested, but wondered if he was born in this area.

It turns out he was born in San Diego and that he just had a birthday on the day before he did this.

So, he just turned 23 and I wonder if his birthday is somehow incorporated into the timing of what he is accused of doing.

What happened in San Bernardino and now in Coachella is too close for comfort for me.

It seems almost every day we wake up to some new possibly avoidable tragedy.

When it happens in your own backyard and makes national/international headlines it doesn't get any realer than that.

Hoping that no area finds itself in a similar situation tomorrow.
