Bernie Sanders' wife explains that there will be no financial disclosure. "Why bother?"

Courtesy of Yahoo News:

Sen. Bernie Sanders has pushed hard for transparency on U.S. trade and campaign finance, but has been far less aggressive in disclosing his own personal finances.

Now his wife and campaign confidante, Jane O'Meara Sanders, is defending the senator's decision not to file a candidate personal finance disclosure and talking about the purchase of a new vacation home.

Sanders and his campaign asked the Federal Election Commission for two 45-day extensions, in mid-May and late June, on filing the personal finance disclosures candidates are usually required to produce, and then decided not to file at all once he dropped out of the race and endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Jane Sanders confirmed Thursday.

"I guess our campaign just said 'why bother'," said the wife of the Vermont independent senator who challenged Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Jane Sanders went on to explain that there was really no new information about their finances to share anyway.

Speaking of no new financial information Jane also talked about that new house they purchased.

On another financial matter, Jane Sanders said she and her husband paid cash — $575,000 — for the four-bedroom summer house they recently bought in North Hero, Vermont, on the Lake Champlain shore. She said she sold her share of her family's long-time vacation home in Bridgton, Maine, to her brother for $150,000, added some money from her retirement account and from an advance her husband got on a book he is writing to come up with the money to buy the couple's third home.

They also own property in Burlington, Vermont, and Washington, D.C.

Oh so their share of the family vacation home only came to $150,000. Interesting.

In other, completely unrelated news Sanders is still accepting donations for "Our Revolution" which is scheduled to launch next week:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will address supporters on Aug. 24 to tout "Our Revolution," a new organization intended to harness the energy of his supporters and help progressive political candidates across the country.

The independent senator also wants to empower “the next generation of progressive leaders by inspiring, recruiting and supporting progressive candidates across the entire spectrum of government – from school board to U.S. Senate.”

Damn, I am getting such a feeling of deja vu here.

A failed campaign, a new house, a PAC dedicated to "changing politics in America." Hmm, where have I seen all of this before?

  1. And $8 million raised for the California primary still in Sander's bank account.

As @AlGiordano says, "What kind of person runs for US president, goes from the first caucus to the convention, raises $235 million, & avoids disclosing finances?"

How does one of the most vocal advocates of transparency avoid transparency?

I don't think the charge is being made that the campaign did not follow accounting rules? Are posters claiming that they used campaign donations to buy the house? I would have to see proof of that. Campaigns have pretty strict accounting rules, quarterly IIRC.

Here's a thought, perhaps people need to stop being stupid and gullible enough to give their money to ANY political campaign or PAC?

That would at least send a message to the grifters (all of them) and perhaps lead to a natural demise of PACs and campaign finance shenanigans if everyone just said "Hell NO"!

Face it, anyone who donates money to any of this political process is really the root of the problem.

Bernie Sanders may call himself a Democratic Socialist but he is more of a Social Democrat.

"In a social democracy, individuals and corporations continue to own the capital and the means of production. Much of the wealth, in other words, is produced privately. That said, taxation, government spending, and regulation of the private sector are much heavier under social democracy than would be the case under pure capitalism."

Capitalism is part of a social democracy. It exists in such "socialist" countries as those in Scandinavia.

I believe there is capitalism in Denmark. Even wealthy people who privately own companies.

One does not preclude the other.

What they are not is crony capitalists or corporatists. Something the U.S. is getting closer and closer to.

Nope, I'm not showing support for ANY candidate, that's what NOT voting for the Presidential ticket means.

It's illogical to say that by not voting for anyone by default I'm showing allegiance to Trump. You could just as easily say that by leaving my ballot blank I'm showing support for Hillary, which would be just as untrue as I support neither of them.

Also it has nothing to do with "being bright" but I sure do appreciate the ad hominem attack :-)

Voting is not an exercise in which ALL spots on the ballot MUST be filled regardless of whether one supports the candidate.

Voting for someone means that you support them and agree with them and would like to see them in office. Often, in local, state and national races there isn't a candidate deserving of my vote, so I leave it blank.

This year I am voting for house and Senate, two incumbents, but they've done a good job in DC. Our house race isn't until next year and our state senator is running unopposed, so no choice there.

Bernie Sanders And His Big Rallies Are Returning To Put The Final Nail In Trump’s Coffin

...Sanders, who endorsed Clinton last month, ticked off a list of states that he is likely to hit in coming weeks, including some where he won primaries and caucuses (New Hampshire, Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin) and some where he fell short but ran strongly among key segments of the electorate (Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nevada).

      ….

Sanders said that during some of those visits he will also campaign on behalf of Democratic Senate candidates, including Katie McGinty in Pennsylvania, Ted Strickland in Ohio and Maggie Hassan in New Hampshire. He is also planning to campaign for other progressive down-ballot candidates, he said.

Bernie Sanders is staying true to his word that he is going to do everything he can to get Hillary Clinton elected. Sen. Sanders also said that he plans on campaigning for progressive candidates around the country as well as his work for Clinton and the Senate Democrats.

Wait until you see how pissed they after they elect their Queen and she reverts to the "right of center" Dem she always was and tosses their beloved Dem platform out the window. Trust me, that's gonna be fun to watch, a tantrum of epic proportions.

His claim was that he was one of the 99%. He isn't. The have tons in investments. Many of us had to take out of much less robust investments (we didn't have two six figure salaries to contribute from) just for living expenses when we lost jobs. We're lucky to have one house, one car. They have three! (That's 2 more than their fair share!) Not to mention she got $200K for costing a college it's existence - she was rewarded for doing a bad job. She should have slunk away in shame. That Bernie puts most of their asset sin her name is pretty telling - a sugar mama. I voted for him in the primary, I now find them disgusting.

Naw. They'll just remain in denial and make up excuses why she can't do what she promised. Apparently keeping promises is ONLY for Bernie Sanders. For Hillary there will be exceptions and excuses for everything.

It will be especially fun to read the pretzel-contorted excuse-making when the Dems win back the Senate but she doesn't pursue the platform. Fully expect that once she's got the office, she'll govern as the conservative war-hawk her daddy raised her to be.

Given the way Romney (a few years of tax returns) and Trump (no tax returns), it will be rare if any candidate bothers to release their taxes. That genie is out of the bottle now and it won't go back in quietly.

Romney didn't release his latest return, folks suggested it was because there was a huge IRS fine for hiding money in Swiss banks.

WTF? Has Sanders violated some Democratic Socialist vow of poverty? Or am I supposed to believe that since his having run for president and having bought a vacation house is for some undefineable reason to be seen as evidence that he embezzled campaign funds? (Yeah, the FEC would NEVER notice that.) What's next? Sanders killed Vince Foster and tried to frame Clinton?

They're not socialist in their political registration either.

      A Democratic Socialist isn't a socialist.

Bernie may say he's a Democratic Socialist but if you listen to how he explains it, he's not really. He's a Social Democrat, which is a different thing.

In what way did Bernie try to destroy the Democratic Party? By pressuring the leadership to include in the party platform things that registered Democratic votes support? I'm a registered Democrat and what Bernie pressured them to include are all things I support. When the Democratic leadership guts the platform or it becomes apparent they will ignore it all and conduct business as usual, I'll change my registration to something else because I've had a belly full of the lip service of the Democratic Party. If Hillary gets elected and she gets her senate majority and the platform is dumped, then she and the Democrats are no better than the Republicans. If that happens they'll also be throwing away that youth vote they *say* they really want, because the youth want what Bernie pushed to include in the platform. Throw that away and you've thrown away all those voters you claim you want. They won't stay just because. They may or may not re-register as non-partisan or unaffiliated, but they may also stop voting at all.

Another post trying to defame Sanders but again missing the mark and instead demonstrating you haven't done even minimal homework to support your latest smear.

You linked to the campaign fundraising site, not "Our Revolution". https://ourrevolution.com/

You would have learned from a simple google search that "Our Revolution" is a 501(c)(4) non-profit social welfare organization, not a PAC. Unlike the PAC you're trying to compare it to in your never-ending efforts to smear a good man, 501(c)(4)'s are limited to 50% or less of their spending money for political purposes. They file with the IRS, not the FEC.

Your other two smears are unsubstantiated garbage, too. Why should Sanders submit a financial statement when his campaign is over?

Obviously you can't substantiate your insinuations that the Sanders' used campaign funds for purchasing their house or any other non-campaign purpose. These accusations in particular are some of the sourest of sour grapes ever from a winner.

Whatever has caused your Ahab-like, unrelenting personal grudge against Sanders, trying to equate him to your nemesis Palin is detestable and neurotic. I believe it's a case of transference: you've been silenced from smearing Palin so you transferred your obsession onto taking your aggressions out on Bernie.

This still is his blog, and his opinion, and I'd wager that we've all made up our minds who we are voting for by now, if we vote at all, which is our right as citizens of this country.

We're disappointed in Bernie, but I think Jane's the one who deserves all the responsibility for the fishy stories about Bernie's personal financial situation.

I believe Jane's the one who claimed they'd already released tax returns (plural) this spring, which the press investigated and found no record of. She lied and said the tax returns would be released when they returned home after the NY primary, when they could have been downloaded from anywhere using their Turbotax software. She then claimed that they were being looked over by an accountant, and would be released after he went through them, that long after the tax season rush was over. As a Catholic, I'm sure it was her idea to use campaign funds illegally to spend $600k to take their family over to the Vatican for less than 48 hours so she and Bernie could meet the Pope. Not to mention the lies she told about the loans for Burlington College. So "there was really no new information about their finances to share anyway"? Yeah, because they didn't submit the tax returns and disclosure papers they were supposed to submit.

Wasn't their declared net worth only something like $528k earlier this year? Motley Fool says $800K:
That $800K does not include their $320K Vermont house, nor their Washington DC home- likely in the $700k range. http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2016/04/17/what-is-bernie-sanders-net-worth.aspx

So Bernie essentially lied on his personal net worth statement.
