Oklahoma teacher takes to panhandling to raise money for school supplies and public awareness as well.

Courtesy of Fox 23 News:

A Tulsa teacher is making a bold statement about the state of education as she pleads for money at a local intersection in order to pay for classroom supplies.

Teresa Danks is a third grade teacher in the Tulsa Public Schools systems.

As a result of serious education budget cuts, Danks says she is now spending between $2,000 and $3,000 of her $35,000 salary on supplies for her students.

Oklahoma ranks nearly last in teacher pay when compared to other states across the U.S.

There is nothing unusual about that by the way, a LOT of teachers are forced to spend their own money to make sure that their students have the materials that they need to learn in the classroom.

And good for this teacher to bring attention to that fact, and to hopefully shame some of the politicians in her area to start adequately funding public education.

With education funding in the US as a whole being so low, I am glad that I never had children. Kids would be better off being educated in France, Germany or the Scandinavian countries, that is, if a person could afford to move there. With the inevitable climate changes awaiting us, it's really selfish to bring children into this kind of a world.

  2. Its the bake sale and bombers equation.

"It will be a great day when our schools have all the money they need, and our air force has to have a bake-sale to buy a bomber."

Parents in Norway get $125 equivalent per child per month for supplies and school clothes/shoes etc.
And they use it for such.

The "voucher system" for private schools must end. The tax is for a public school system. So? If you want to send your kid to private schools then you pay the cost. Stop robbing USA Public School Funds.

I went to Catholic school for twelve years in the 60's and 70's. My late father was a steel worker and I remember asking him if it was fair that he paid tuition for my brothers and me, but his taxes paid for public schools we didn't attend. He said yes it was fair. He and my mother chose to send us to Catholic school. And everyone, including him was responsible for making sure the public schools were there for all children And more than functional.

  7. Haha! "Shame" republicans? Seriously? The GOP has NO shame. Not only did they elect Trumpelthinskin, they are still defending every off-the-wall, delusional tweet he sends while sitting on his not-gold-plated White House toilet. Shame is not in the GOP user manual.

  8. And this surprised no one, ever. Last year Kansas lost a slug of teachers to Missouri. Better pay. Red states are destroying public education-you know the kind the constitution calls for.

I was a school nurse. I would run out of money by March. I supplied my office out of pocket for the rest of school year for 250 plus kids. That was 20 years ago. Hoped it would get better by now. I was making $5,000 less then what she is making now and that was 20 years ago

Adopt-A-Classroom! Find a local need and fill it. If we all work together, even at $5.00/person/month, we could have all the supplies our kids need.

You'll find a plethora of teachers wanting things such as crayons, markers, binders, notebook paper, dividers, etc. Not perks (although you'll find them too) but basics to meet the need of a much more demanding curriculum.

I find it appalling that public education in this country has become yet another "public enemy." The GOP is waging war on health care and on education as well as on the environment and human decency. What does the GOP hate so much about the American people as a whole?

    2. They've been after education (and social security) for decades. The only two pots of tax payer dollars the private sector couldn't get their hands on any more.

You just watch now. They will privatize both if Ryan has half a chance. Wall St will suck up all of that money.

  14. I used to spend between $2,000 and $4,000 just on classroom stuff. That doesn't count what I spent on conferences, classes and trainings.

They changed the tax laws so in the last few years of my career I couldn't deduct more than $500.

No teacher spends $500 or less supplementing school supplies. Teachers have been subsidizing public schools for decades and all the Deplorables can do is attack them for being paid too much and having too much "time off". (Average teachers work 50-60 hours weeks with the bulk of the work at home, unpaid, grading papers and preparing lesson plans. All that "time off" at home during the summer? Taking classes to recertify or for an advanced degree so they can do their jobs better. On their own time and paid for out of their own pocket.

People are clueless as to the dedication of teachers and ungrateful for what they provide both in the classroom and out.

We spend $200-$300 each on my 4 grandkids here for school supplies. The school send the list and the parents have to provide them. Some of the items on the lists are pretty questionable, like Clorox wipes.A large size bottle of cleaner and some washable cleaning cloths would have been used years ago. Then the lists contain things like multiple Trapper Keepers, etc.
