I am not sure how much this helps President Obama, but it certainly made me feel better about supporting him.

The Secular Coalition for America today released its 2012 Presidential Candidate Scorecard—a guide for secular-minded Americans on the presidential candidates in the upcoming 2012 election. The scorecard ranks the major candidates of both Republican and Democratic parties on issues important to nontheistic Americans, and all Americans who support a robust separation of church and state.

Of the three leading Republican candidates, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and U.S. Representative Ron Paul received mostly negative scores, while former U.S. Representative and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich received a grade of “F” in almost every category. U.S. Representative Michelle Bachmann, Texas Governor Rick Perry, and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum also received almost exclusively negative grades in most categories. Former Utah Governor and Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman and President Barack Obama received mixed positives.

“Given the current political climate, I’m not surprised that the candidates received mixed ratings at best,” said Herb Silverman, President of the Secular Coalition for America. “Nontheists almost never get the opportunity to vote for a candidate who openly acknowledges being an atheist, but it’s frightening to see that at least half of the candidates don’t have a basic understanding of the principle of separation of church and state on which our country was founded.”

The scorecard assigned grades of "A", "B", "C" or "F" to the eight major candidates based on their public statements and actions on nine subjects:

  • Attitude Toward Nontheists
  • Church & State Separation
  • Taxpayer Funding of Religion
  • God, Faith & Governance Endorsements & Associations
  • Evolution
  • Scientifically Based Regulations & Legislation
  • Religious Discrimination & Civil Rights
  • Religious Refusal Laws

Here is the scorecard.

For anybody who does NOT believe that Christianity is the only true path to God, or who respects the separation of church and state, this is a VERY troubling indication of what kind of candidates are running for the highest political office in the country.

    Hey G,
Just heard Perry is out of the race in Virginia...something about signatures or paperwork or something.
I think 'stick a fork in him' is somewhat appropriate..

Need we ask where Sara would have fallen? Right next to MB or do they have a minus sign rating. I know and F is and F but sister Sara would certainly not even register as a fail.

  3. Romney gets an "A' in believes in evolution??? Religious 'revolution' maybe but I doubt he's got a warm spot for Darwin.

He's just on another church mission --- bring in a few more tithing converts while shoring up the wealthy power base at the top. What a fast-talking slick he is, wouldn't buy brushes or extracts from him at my front door much less trust him with the future of this Nation.

  4. The dominionists are too focused on their own narrow interests to realize that President Obama is the only contender in 2012 that has the ability to serve as a leader for ALL Americans. All of the others, possibly with the exceptions of Romney and Huntsman, can only pander to those who believe that those in the dominionist crowd are the only "real 'Muricans, and thus, God's favorite fundies.

Keep on believin', GOP. The only downside of having you clowns guarantee President Obama four more years in the White House is that we'll have to listen to the mindless attacks of the low-IQ fundies about the "foreigner runnin' OUR country". They are such small-minded people who will never know any better and should be pitied.

I'm really getting sick of this 'religion' conversation going on with our candidates who are running for governmental offices. This is happening on all levels of government - national, state and local.

It's almost like one candidate is trying to outdo another w/their conversations and direction from God. They've all been chosen you know!!

Most of them don't act like the teachings of the church I was raised in! They have been proven to lie, have affairs while married and be unethical.

It's amazing to watch these Republican candidates sink one right after the other. Their party is a friggin mess!

I'm voting for President Obama AGAIN. He's doing one hell of a job and I'm delighted to see his numbers in the polls increasing. Yea!!!! I'm sure it's driving the Repubs nuts and just watch - they'll just get nastier and nastier and lie, lie, lie about the doings of our President.

Vet, study and listen to all sides before going to the polls to vote folks....you will see what I mean. President Obama is the man!!

Thanks to 3:03. That brightens my day. Also, too, hearing that the DOJ blocked the SC voting rights bill as being discriminatory also brightens this holiday weekend for me!

Thanks to you, Gryphen, for a great post - I didn't know about the scorecard. I hope one day we can elect people based upon their intellect and vision instead of what their religious or spiritual views are or aren't. So tired of some people wearing it like a badge of worth.

Expect to see this rating again on FOX. They'll be using it against Obama, and will be constantly repeating it for at least a week.

Course, you have to wonder about the accuracy of any graph that list Huntsman as "N/A" on "accepts evolution" after this widely reported-on tweet:

“To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming,”

Gryphen, President Obama is genuine. He accepts ALL people.
No matter what their station in life is.
No matter if they believe or not believe.
No matter what race, color, national origin, creed or religion they are.
No matter if they are straight or gay.
We are all important to him.

He is a great person, this is the kind of person who should be leader of the Free World.

Plus, he is doing a great job as president.

I watched this video yesterday, a segment of Rachel's interview with former President Jimmy Carter. Rachel asked him about how the evangelicals turned into the religious right and he explained his opinion regarding the separation of church and state. As an American, and a Christian, I expect the same of all politicians. President Obama has not disappointed me.

Merry Christmas, Gryphen. And as Dr. Spock would say, happy holidays, live long and prosper! Thanks!
