In fact both men used the church to gain power, and Stalin even studied for the priesthood.
They used religion to gain power, and once they had that power they stripped the church of influence, in order to protect that power.
Neither were driven by Atheism, they were driven by megalomania.
I have to agree with you. There is a lot of immoral and murderous behavior by so called religious people. All we have to do is look at the "stand your ground laws", the so-called religiosity in our laws today by the tea party and far right wingers. I'd say most of the crap in congress, state and local government is all being done in the name of God by a bunch of megalomaniacs.
ReplyDeleteUncle Joe was the product of a religious education.
ReplyDeleteNot bad, really not too bad this banner. Did you photoshop-it-up yourself? Good stuff. Indeed both used the structures at hand - and at many times during the last 14 centuries or so it would have been hard to find a better structured organization than the Roman Catholic church indeed.
ReplyDeleteI think it is atheist Alain de Botton who pointed out that atheists have constantly complaining about the impact and influence of Christianity, but they never did anything to understand (let alone offer to people) the quality of service offered by the Catholic Church for instance. If a Catholic has a hard time coping with a problem, they all know (all 1.2 billion Catholics today) where they can go for a "confession" of kinds. Which is essentially psychological treatment - and it may work well for them, regardless how literally untrue some of the stuff may be - because the "understanding" offered by the confessor is often very "true" anyway, in the sense of honest, someone who listens and attempts to understand). So what Alain was saying is: it's easy to complain and throw shit at religion, but they'd better try making sense of what they see.
But I'm deviating from the subject: Hitler and Stalin did perhaps not understand that part of it - yet they certainly saw how powerful the distribution system was, and they wanted to hijack it of course. What Would You Do if you were a f*cking mad dictator? You can't just leave such a system unabused.
In my discussions (I debated a lot on myspace and facebook) I must admit I have met a ton of atheists who obviously can't tell religion from politics. There are of course also a ton of Christians who don't segregate church and state but in a certain way atheists are usually not very helpful because they do exactly the same (I'm talking about Dawkins-initiated nuts rather than grown up atheists of course).
Christians who point fingers to Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot (because of the word atheism used in their manifesto's) are usually using this little piece of information in self-defense, and totally unbalanced. Atheists who point fingers at Hitler as a 'Christian' make the same mistake obviously. The real problem underneath is that atheism and theism tend to be exclusive points of views and it is very hard to believe that such views would represent the vantage point of reality. They clearly don't. Atheism and theism are some sort of 'bloatware', they take a lot of processor time but conceal too much what "the real software" underneath is all about.
Stalin wouldn't have followed the Roman Catholic church, he would have followed the Eastern Orthodox church. Soso was from Georgia.
ReplyDelete~Canuck~
Small correction...Stalin studied in an Orthodox seminary in Tblisi, Georgia.
ReplyDeleteTheir version of history is as stupid as their version of science!
ReplyDeleteSimple minds.......simple world.......if only things were that simple....
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteUm, WHO exactly it's making this false claim anyway? It's moronic and doesn't make sense.
One lay person does not single handedly reflect the entire ideology of one religion (Jesus, Muhammad and Buddha being exceptions). And there are a lot of good and decent people out there.
But to say Hitler represents Christians in any way, shApe or form is moronic!
Hitler claiming he was Christian is as empty as me saying I can fly. It's bullshit. Just saying something doesn't make it true.
And Mussolini was a fucking monster. WHO fucking cares what he thought religiously? He couldn't give two shits about human life. The fact that he was an atheist speaks nothing of atheism, it is part of the life view of a totally fucked up dude. What about Dahmer? Gacy? Bundy? Pol Pot? Hussein? Or hundreds of other fucked up murderers?
It. Doesn't. Matter! !!!!!! Right?
See my point?
How many of those crackpots were atheists?
These graphic is the antithesis of critical thinking, Gryphen! It is so stupid. :)
So picking these two assholes out and making some lazy meme with blanket statements is pretty much the worst. So lame.
Neil de Grasse Tyson Smacks Down Creationists Who Are Demanding Equal Time on Cosmos

Hitler allegedly received Last Rites, so according to Catholic Doctrine, he's in Heaven rejoicing.
ReplyDeleteNope.
DeleteYou have to want to absolve your soul of all negative; a fully clear conscience, a desire to be forgiven.
Ain't no way Hitler was sorry for his sins so he probably ain't in heaven.
But onlY God can make that final decision.
Agreed.
ReplyDeleteThis also reveals just how little attention got paid, in school, by those who obviously do not know that Fascism and Communism are pretty well OPPOSITE political systems.
ReplyDeleteOne minute Obama is the New Hitler, the next, the New Marx.
If only such people knew how the rest of us view them with the same utter disdain as we treat maggots feeding on dead flesh.
They sat next to us in class, but spent their time picking their noses, or writing on their scalps with a ballpoint pen, marveling at the dandruff gobs that would collect.
(Sorry to be that graphic, but I'd just ignore such people, if they quietly lived their pathetic lives...instead, many want to badly be noticed, so carry their misspelled signs and yell out their ridiculous delusions, for all to have to put up with.)
