Richard Martinez, father of the last UCSB shooting victim, asks "Have we learned nothing?"

Courtesy of TPM:

"Have we learned nothing? These things are going to continue until somebody does something," Richard Martinez said in an interview with CNN. "So where the hell is the leadership? Where the hell are these people we elect to congress that we spend so much money on? These people are getting rich sitting in Congress, and what do they do? They don't take care of our kids. My kid died because nobody responded to what happened at Sandy Hook."

Martinez's son, Christopher, was the last of six victims allegedly killed by Elliot Rodger before the suspected shooter took his own life. An emotional Martinez had railed against "craven, irresponsible politicians" and the National Rifle Association for their support of gun rights at a Saturday press conference. He redoubled his criticism of Congress in his interview with CNN, calling lawmakers a "rudderless bunch of idiots."

A visibly angry Martinez expressed dismay that no legislative action has been taken since 20 elementary school students were killed by shooter Adam Lanza in Newtown.

"Those parents lost little kids. I had 20 years with my son. That's all I'll ever have," he said. "But those people lost their children at 6 and 7 years old. How do you think they feel? And who's talking to them now, who's doing anything for them now? Who is standing up for those kids that died back then in an elementary school? Why wasn't something done? It's outrageous."

It is outrageous. It's outrageous that no mater how many people die from gun violence everyday in this country, that our politicians are too cowardly to stand up and fight against a lobby that is really not nearly as powerful as we are led to believe.

And the most heartbreaking thing of all is that after we are finished lamenting this latest shooting, and after our memories start to fade, we will all go back to our lives as if it never happend until the NEXT terrible massacre occurs, and you know it will, which angers us enough to yet again speak out and demand that something be done to stop the violence.

But of course very little actually will change, and more grieving parents will soon join the Sandy Hook parents, and Mr. Martinez, in asking WHY.

What is also outrageous is a young man so mentally ill being allowed to have weapons. Sorry, but after he posted the first videos and his own parents called the cops ( and I am betting that cannot be the easiest thing for any parent to do)he should have been institutionalized and all his weapons should have been seized.

    1. Ah, but we have laws, thanks to the NRA, and the cops didn't get a warrant to even LOOK for his guns. Locking people up is not easy. Once a kid is 18, his parents can't do anything but watch. I have a friend whose daughter went to college in Canada, and when she became mentally ill, the college could not even contact the parents and tell them what was happening...the same is true here, unfortunately.

First off Cops aren't drs. so why are they in the position of making this "judgement" call?
There are welfare checks and usually the police call in the EMT's. They should of called the EMTs to take him into the hospital for a 5150 Eval but they were too fucking lazy and charmed by a Narcissistic, after all he was a rich white boy who spoke nice, and drove a Beamer, he prob even offered to let them drive it... If the babies at Sandy Hook being slaughtered didn't stop this insane trajectory we're on, I think the only thing that will have a significant effect is if someone in LaPierre's immediate family is shot in a mass killing.

I just don't understand how the heartless and cruel people running the NRA can sleep at night or look at themselves in the mirror. How can they listen to the anguish in the voices of the parents who have lost children to senseless, preventable gun violence and not feel a shred of empathy? There is not enough money in the world to compensate for being that inhumane.

It sounds terrible but I've thought the same thing too - that until some bigwigs family in the NRA or a pro-gun politician family loses someone dear to them due to guns in the hands of those who shouldn't have them - NOTHING will change.

I agree with everything you said. This SO saddens me and my heart aches. Money buys anything nowadays thanks to the SCOTUS! Laws must change. Vote. Speak out. I pray for these families.

Folks often say that only when the RWNJs start losing their own kids will something be done about American gun insanity.

But the truth is the RWNJs don't love and value their children the way we do. That's why their kids are always killing each other with loaded weapons they find lying around. I can't count the times in the past year that some recently-bereaved RWNJ parent has shrugged and said, "Junior had a good life."

Fuck NO, he did NOT have a good life! He had 6 or 7 short years on earth and NO it was NOT God's will that you should neglect him to death!

They just don't love and value their children like we do.

I really don't believe that is necessarily true that they don't love and value their children. Their stupidity about guns over-rides their intelligence regarding their kids. Plus, many kids are shot at someone else's house. I know that I never thought to ask the parents at a play date if they had guns and were they secured. You expect people to be responsible and intelligent about weapons. I have guns and no one ever asked me before letting their kids visit.

The NRA is making the gun makers filthy rich by making sure both sides have the guns....think about it. They buy our politicians for no laws so the "bad guys" can get all they want and at the same time they drum fear into everyone else and wave the 2nd amendment so the "good guys" can protect themselves. Its a win win for the manufacturers and Martinez is right...vote the bastards out and keep them out!

Something HAS to be done, we can't let Sandy Hook Victims die in vain, and neither should Santa Barbara's victims.

But your post is spot on. Life will go on, memories fade (until it happens yet again, and again, and again) We need to support the Mom's in any way we can to keep this front and center until laws change.
We went to college to pick up our daughter and her things for break last week before this incident happened. The school has an alert system that goes directly to the students and the families, they have magnetic swipe cards and codes that are changed frequently, they have security up the yazoo.. My daughter went in to get something, my son slipped a credit card in the frame of the door, so he didn't have to remember the code etc. I heard a noise and turned around, there were twelve security guards and everyone in her building's phones rang. So I figure she's got a fifty fifty chance at being safe in her building. Outside? She's got the same chances as everyone does out in public.
As scary as this incident is, we have to live our lives without fear or what quality of life will we have?
This Father's been extremely vocal, and I wholeheartedly agree with every word he says. To think of those children's short lives while mourning his daughter shows he's a man of conscience. We're all diminished, we'll never know what great things these victims may have accomplished.

Peter King Calls For Enhanced Gun Control Legislation In Wake Of California Rampage

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) joined the charge of politicians calling for a review of gun control legislation on Sunday in the wake of a gunman's deadly rampage on the campus of University of California, Santa Barbara.

King, a longtime advocate of stricter gun control policies, told the Washington Post that the incident reinforces the argument for expanding background checks for gun owners.

“This tragedy demonstrates once again the need to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill,” he said.

King added that any effort to convince House leadership to bring gun control legislation up this summer will be "very difficult," saying gun control advocates in Congress need to "focus the discussion" surrounding mental illness and access to firearms.

The Republican said his party should not give up efforts to thwart powerful gun advocacy groups, according to the Washington Post.

“Even though this issue may not be popular in particular congressional districts, if we want to be a national party, we ought to be looking closely at it,” he said.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) also called on Congress to revisit gun control legislation on Sunday, suggesting a focus on mental health could bring Republicans and Democrats together on the issue.

"Maybe reconfigure them to center on mental health, which is a point where we can agree that we need more resources to make the country healthier," he said. "The Congress will be complicit if we fail to act."

No, the Fact Elliot Rodgers Killed More Men Than Women Doesn’t Change His Misogyny

...It’s been happening in the comments section of every article about the Isla Vista, California shooting. People try to talk about the misogyny behind the shootings, and someone, frankly a male, steps in to write about how more men were killed than women by Elliott Rodgers. They believe this somehow proves that Mr. Rodgers wasn’t a sexist, it seems. It isn’t altogether clear what point they want to make given the volumes of other evidence that this disturbed, young man was steeped in hatred of women. Mr. Rodgers also did hate men. He was filled with a seething hatred toward the world, born of a warped view of gender, race, and class. Simply put, his orientation toward men was rooted in his perspective that women were objects of sexual conquest and men were alpha or beta competitors standing in the way of his sexual release. He complained that desirable women went off with this alpha male or that one. We know of his complaints, because he spent so much time in online forums or on Youtube expressing these thoughts. He also left behind a lengthy manifesto.

The army of men dispatching to the comments sections of articles on this tragedy, with their monotonous repetition of the notion that this young man’s male death toll was purposely higher, are seemingly clutching to the idea that women do control society. Misogynists frequently amplify what they perceive to be women’s power. From Rodger’s own writing, you hear women described as sexual juggernauts bulldozing over men with their whims. This is not uncommon for misogynists. They believe that women hold a special sexual hold over men. The response to this is often a desire to tightly control a woman’s reproduction through birth control and abortion policy.

When domestic violence is discussed, they want to talk about how women are abusers just like men, despite the heavily lopsided death toll of women killed by significant others.

EXCLUSIVE: Parents of virgin killer who slayed six are 'crippled by guilt', friend says

The parents of virgin killer Elliot Rodger are 'grieving for those innocents who lost their lives, above their own son', according to a close family friend.

Peter and Chin Rodger have been 'crippled by guilt' since their eldest child went on his bloody rampage on Friday – something they heard unfold on the radio as they raced up to Santa Barbara to be with the disturbed 22-year-old.

And while they are heartbroken over the loss of their son, they are currently more distraught about the deaths of his six innocent victims.

Close friend and author Simon Astaire has spent the last few days with Chin, Peter and his wife Soumaya and he says they are so upset they can 'barely string a sentence together'.
