The Body in the Street.

The below is from an article written by Charles P. Peirce, for Esquire magazine.

I am simply going to cut and paste a portion of it to give you an idea of how powerful it is, and then suggest that you click the link at the top and read the whole thing yourself.

Here you go:

I keep coming back to what seems to me to be the most inhumane thing of all, the inhumane thing that happened before the rage began to rise, and before the backlash began to build, and before the cameras and television lights, and before the tear gas and the stun grenades and the chants and the prayers. I keep coming back to the one image that was there before the international event began, before it became a television show and a symbol in flames and something beyond what it was in the first place. I keep coming back to one simple moment, one ghastly fact. One image, from which all the other images have flowed.

They left the body in the street.

Dictators leave bodies in the street.

Petty local satraps leave bodies in the street.

Warlords leave bodies in the street.

A police officer shot Michael Brown to death. And they left his body in the street. For four hours. Bodies do not lie in the street for four hours. Not in an advanced society. Bodies lie in the street for four hours in small countries where they have perpetual civil war. Bodies lie in the street for four hours on back roads where people fight over the bare necessities of simple living, where they fight over food and water and small, useless parcels of land. Bodies lie in the street for four hours in places in which poor people fight as proxies for rich people in distant places, where they fight as proxies for the men who dig out the diamonds, or who drill out the oil, or who set ancient tribal grudges aflame for modern imperial purposes that are as far from the original grudges as bullets are from bows. Those are the places where they leave bodies in the street, as object lessons, or to make a point, or because there isn't the money to take the bodies away and bury them, or because nobody gives a damn whether they are there or not. Those are the places where they leave bodies in the street.

Bodies are not left in the streets of the leafy suburbs. The bodies of dogs and cats, or squirrels and raccoons, let alone the bodies of children, are not left in the streets of the leafy suburbs. No bodies are left in the streets of the financial districts. Freeze to death on a bench in the financial districts and you are whisked away before your inconvenient body can disturb the folks in line at the Starbucks across the street. But the body of a boy can be left in the street for four hours in a place like Ferguson, Missouri, and who knows whether it was because people wanted to make a point, or because nobody gave a damn whether he was there or not. Ferguson, Missouri was a place where they left a body in the street. For four hours. And the rage rose, and the backlash built, and the cameras arrived, and so did the cops, and the thing became something beyond what it was in the first place. And, in a very real way, in the streets of Ferguson, the body was still in the street.

Really, what more is there to say?

I read this by Charles Pierce yesterday. He wrote what I was thinking basically. It really shocked me that they could get away with leaving Browns body in street not covered no ambulance but I realized the fear people there have, then I saw a video by someone who lives across street from where body lay. Video lasted 10 min. & all through it I could see officer pacing beside the body & all the neighbors stayed indoors! It was eerie, but I thought an ambulance would be there soon, not over 4 hours later!!!

They left him lying out there like a dead animal! I can't believe to WTF this country is turning into...the RW hatred!
He should of been covered out of respect for the family of course they HAVE no respect for the family or the kid wouldn't of been shot for nothing! What a disgusting mess the RW has made of this country.
And I personally thank Sarah palin for leading the hatred of our potus with her incoherent screeching every flippin day!

I too blame the gop and their hateful ideology for some of the world's wars and mayhem. I believe they (other countries) feel if the gop can fuck with our government, ridicule our President, ignore his powers, and threaten his life on the daily so can they. And thus think of the US as weak.

This is the thing about you Americans: YOU don't see yourselves as a country where police leave corpses lying around on the street in the summer. Ask someone from another if it surprises them that American police can execute a citizen on the street and.leave the body degrading on the tarmac in the heat for hours.

In most places in the US this would not happen. I think that the Ferguson police really messed up with this, well, murder and were in such a panic that they forgot about the proper protocols. Absolutely inexcusable and handled in the worst way possible by a totally inept police department.

This article hits the nail on the head. The entire police department in Ferguson should be replaced with officers who understand that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. Within the past month a police officer in Minnesota was murdered in the line of duty at a routine traffic stop. When the killer was caught (he was white and a confessed cop hater), he was seriously injured in a shoot out. However, he was quickly taken to a hospital for medical attention. It would have been easy for his apprehenders to kill him on the spot, but they didn't. His judgement will be determined when he goes on trial.

They needed to leave the body there in order to amass all the data and info in order to produce a complete, accurate, and detailed report on the incident.

It would have made sense for one of the police officers to check his pulse instead of letting the young man just lay there. Faux wants everyone to think the victim was just a thug. The real thugs in this drama are the police in Ferguson.

5:03 AM, an incident report was NOT written because Officer Wilson on the ground that his statement might tend to incriminate him. He obviously has been talking to his lawyer. And if they actually needed four hours to "amass all the data and info" then they are extremely incompetent. It's not like they found a body in a back alley and had to call in a forensic team. The REAL data was gathered by the people who took video with their cell phones.

5:03 AM A milder "BS" won't do it for your comment which is pure bullshit! I've heard your exact words from CNN and see it written on RW propaganda sites. IF they "left the body there to collect all the evidence", then why did they remove Officer Darren Wilson's police car from the scene? No one was able to check for Michael Brown's handprints on it, or for blood splatters in the car or for the gun powder residue in the car. Does that sound like the Ferguson PD was "gathering evidence"? Not to me. It does sound like they were in major CYA mode: pick up the lose shells, go dig the bullet out of the house (or apartment) where one of Wilson's shots landed; get the car away from the site; clean the car up; give enough time for Officer Darren Wilson to sober up from alcohol or drugs; and give him enough time to fabricate a story.

No worries a NEW open Carry group in town! HueyPNewton Gun Club, Open Carry all AA's! Hey NRA look what you inspired!!! Yes all Americans can open carry if THEY WANT TOO! (and need to as looking at the body on the street)
"Mediaite reports “a group of African-Americans in Dallas have responded in the most Texas way possible: By forming the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, an open-carry group that goes around in public, bearing the same semiautomatic weaponry as their fellow open-carry advocates, protesting police brutality.”

The group is named after the co-founder of the Black Panthers, and notes on their website that Dallas is a hotbed of violence by cops against minorities:

“the police have murdered over 70 unarmed individuals, most of the black and brown men, over the last ten years. Excluding a recent incident where police testimony was contradicted by surveillance footage, there have been no indictments since 1973.”

Dallas Police have killed over 70 unarmed individuals since 2003. The time to #EndPoliceTerrorism is NOW! #Ferguson

      — HueyPNewton Gun Club (@HueyGunClub) August 21, 2014

As Mediaite reports, “Here is the gun club going to a restaurant, where Reason reports they ate with their guns out, next to a group of cops:

A body on the ground for many hours, is nothing new in a very serious investigation. You folks just want something to gripe about and point fingers. You should be happy they were doing a comlete investigation. By the way 6:57, unless someone actually managed to capture the shooting, all the aftermath video is of very little worth other than maybe confiming location of body.

Jesse, I would like to propose a Sunday morning meditation.
I am 72 years old and the thought that occurred to me many years ago is the wide spread use of the word "fuck". Think for a moment what an insult this word is to every woman in the world.
What does the word express for a man when used in present day language?

The word is used when things are going well. Is it an attempt by males to place blame on females when things don't go well or rather is it a way for a male to express powerlessness in the face of their practically uncontrollable desire for females?
We have only to go back Genesis to see the blame placed on a female.
I appreciate your effort to call attention to the "war on women" being waged by the Republicans. I suggest that a bit of meditation might be done by all men whenever they find themselves using this derogatory epithet.
Are women so powerful that they must be put down in ordinary conversation? WTF and Snafu and the many other expressions remind me of the term "nigger" that once was in common use. Give it some thought and perhaps discussion.
    Thank you.

If there ever was a war on women by use of the word 'fuck', which I don't think there ever was, it has long since been settled, the women won and took hostages. Frankly most women I know are more crass than the gents these days.

My husband was a fairly prominent lawyer (white) and he was shot and killed in 1987 about 8:15 in the morning. According to the autopsy report, the autopsy started @ 9:00. There was an investigation with media swarming like flies but they still removed the body quickly. I can't imagine as a family member knowing that the body lay for 4 hours with no covering or removal. It was long enough that we had to relive it every day on the evening news as they used the picture of the body on the sidewalk as their lead-in. And this was in Kansas City, KS also a suburb of a large metropolitan area.

Powerfully needful! It was surprising that not many took time to elaborate on this inhumane act.

It was troubling to see photos of this 18 year-old, an 18 year-old boy lying dead in the middle of the street, with yellow cordoned-off tape keeping people from going near him. He couldn't even be treated in a dignified manner with at least a sheet covering his face.

It's not the America I believed in when I see that image. This kid's face and head twisted into the pavement and his body full of bullet holes. It's horrific. Something one sees in third world countries.

I wondered if there was some sadistic pleasure in the authorities and police who left him lying there for 4 hours. What else could it be? They can plead it was a 'crime scene' and they needed experts to investigate and needed the body there for photos and such, but, still, that could have been done swiftly with pictures and an ambulance and police vehicles should have been parked around the body to keep a respectful enclosure to keep strangers gazing at the spectacle.

They just left him there, no mom or dad or family to hold onto him until an ambulance arrived, or even a caring stranger to sit or kneel next to the body until coroner arrived, nothing. NOTHING.

This is a clear case of trophyism on the police's part.

From the outside looking in: The fact that the Ferguson Police left Mr. Brown's body lying (not laying, BTW) in the street for over 4 hours demonstrates, like not much else could, the utter hatred and disrespect this police department has for over 60% of its own citizens. This disrespect obviously emanates from the top down, as well as from the bottom up. It truly does cast a very bad light on the state of Missouri. It's a crying shame.

The story of Michael Brown being loaded into an SUV is also very strange. Did they put his body onto a gurney or even stretcher in the SUV? Or did they carry him from his legs and arms and throw him in? Wish someone could have video of how this was done.

The vehicle that was used to transport Michael Brown's body is a medical examiners vehicle. That is the type of vehicle that is used when transporting DEAD people from a crime scene. Ambulances are not used for that purpose because an ambulance should be kept available to assist people that are still alive or might be resuscitated.

“I personally believe in Jesus Christ as my lord and savior, but I’m also a killer,” said officer Dan Page, a 35-year veteran, in the video. “I’ve killed a lot. And if I need to, I’ll kill a whole bunch more. If you don’t want to get killed, don’t show up in front of me. I have no problems with it. God did not raise me to be a coward." Page added, “I’m into diversity — I kill everybody. I don’t care."

I read that article three times, and he's asking the simplest of questions, and there's no acceptable answer. My BIL is in law enforcement, he's processed crime scenes with multiple victims, the protocol isn't rocket science, it's taking measurements, covering limbs to preserve possible gun residue, and treating the dead humanely by either using body bags, or covering the body while waiting for transport. Then, once the bodies are removed and the evidence accounted for, they take their time to find clues and answers, lab work. It's not like television shows where everything's done in half an hour, and it may take four or more hours, but this child was left out in the street for a purpose, and even my bil and his co workers say it was a travesty based solely on racism and hate.
I'm glad Eric Holder is there, and I'm glad President Obama is thinking of taking away war weapons from cops in civil situations.
