Suspect in Mississippi university shooting takes his own life. Motive for shooting may have been jealousy.

An instructor at Mississippi's Delta State University suspected of killing the woman he lived with and a colleague -- possibly as the result of a love triangle -- died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound late Monday, authorities said.

Local media, citing the Washington County Sheriff's office and other agencies, reported that Shannon Lamb, 45, was being chased by police in his black Dodge Avenger on Highway 1 near Greenville when he pulled the car over, bailed out on foot, and ran into some woods along the side of the road. Lamb had earlier spoken to police, telling them "he's not going to jail."

Delta State University police chief Lynn Buford told the Associated Press that the pursuing officers heard a single gunshot before finding Lamb wounded. The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

....

Police believe that hours before Lamb shot and killed Schmidt, he murdered his domestic partner, 41-year-old Amy Prentiss, at the home the couple shared in Gautier, Miss., approximately 300 miles from Delta State's campus in Cleveland.

Lamb, a geography and social science education instructor, allegedly believed Prentiss was also in a relationship with Schmidt. However, authorities early Tuesday declined to formally identify a motive for the crimes.

I said in an earlier post that the majority of the shootings that take place in this country have NOTHING to do with self defense and are usually the result of depression or anger.

However I obviously left out one motivation...jealousy.

These shootings were not due to mental illness as so many pro-gun folks would have us believe.

They were carried out by an intelligent, well educated individual who was temporarily unable to deal with his emotions.

Without an available weapon this would likely have been a case of one man punching another in the face. Everybody would have lived to someday put the incident behind them.

But when guns are readily available all it takes is one bad day, one bad hour, one bad minute, and everything changes forever.

  2. As been said many times before, if the killing of children, still young enough to believe in Santa Claus, some shot at such close range the area above their necks no longer resembled human features, didn't force changed thinking about guns, nothing is going to.

    Goddamn it.

And yet, Bernie Sanders gets a lot of love here. He voted against the Brady Act, but hey, who cares, right?

It's not just that guns are available, it's also that people think guns are the way to settle disputes.

You know what you never see: the NRA advertising how many innocent lives were saved because of a gun versus how many innocent lives were ended because of a gun.

That's because I would imagine that ratio is 1:100 and I'll bet I'm being generous towards the NRA.

Their standard reply for tragedies like this is "We need more good guys with guns"

The only place I can think of where bad guys and good guys are equally armed is a war zone. How come people aren't falling all over themselves to move into war zones? Using NRA logic, you'd be safer than living in gang-filled housing projects.

OT - something to feel good about:
President Obama Drops The "U" Word On The Republican Party
    Excerpt:
"If there's one thing that is sure to send Republicans into an apoplectic, screaming rage, it's the prospect of the most successful President in modern memory deliberately tweaking them where it hurts the most--namely, in their phony pretensions of patriotism:

“This whole anti-immigrant sentiment that’s out there in our politics right now is contrary to who we are. Because unless you are a Native American, your family came from someplace else,” Mr. Obama said. “Don’t pretend that somehow 100 years ago the immigration process was all smooth and strict. That’s not how it worked.” The grandparents and great-grandparents of politicians taking a hard line on immigration, he said, were also “somehow considered unworthy or uneducated or unwashed.”
“When I hear folks talking as if somehow these kids are different from my kids or less worthy in the eyes of God, that somehow they are less worthy of our respect and consideration and care, I think that’s un-American,” Mr. Obama said.
In one sentence the President managed to tie immigration, patriotism and religious faith together and frame it as an indictment of the Republican platform. With one carefully timed, barbed phrase he baited the entire Republican field, including the blowhard idiot with the orange hair, into responding, while turning the Republican meme of his "otherness" on its head and serving it up to them on a cold dish. If you don't think the right is already churning up its outrage meter, Google "Un-American" on your news feed of choice and take a look at who is reporting on this."

Never thought I'd be touched by gun violence. My daughter's boyfriend shot himself accidentally last week while playing russian roulette with two friends. He was a wonderful kid with his life ahead of him. Now he's in a coma with a questionable outcome. I'm still in shock. We own guns, hunt, etc. but goddamn when will people learn to lock those fuckers up! :-(

    1. People will keep their weapons locked up when owners who allow others to access these same weapons are arrested and tried for Involuntary Manslaughter when someone else gets hold of the firearm and kills themselves or someone else. Until then, as long as they are forgiven for "accidents", nothing will happen.

True. I totally agree. It's understandably hard on his mom and I know she has terrible guilt but I'm not sure it's about the gun! She had the gun in her closet unlocked, had forgotten about it, and doesn't understand why he got it out! Uh, because he's a dumb 18 year old boy showing off or not thinking. The police are trying to determine whether or not one of the friends might have put the ammo in or encouraged him, I guess with the thought of charging someone with a crime. The crime is that poor boy in the neuro ICU. Our kids have had gun safety classes, shot at the range with dad, and understand that guns are dangerous - but we lock those guns up and wouldn't give KIDS the benefit of the doubt.

Slightly o/t. Shortly before the school year started last Tuesday, at a nearby middle school's registration program for the new year, a parent showed up with his holstered gun on display for all to see: other parents, students, faculty and administration. The armed parent was allowed to stay because he had his open carry permit with him. The local newspaper printed an article about it and many emailed comments were included in today's "letters to the editor" section. I was appalled at the number of people who thought it was just fine for an armed person to show up at a school function like that.

It seems to me that anyone who was present who felt intimidated in any way by the armed person should have triggered his expulsion.

Why did the guy need his gun? Was he afraid of the other parents, of the children, of the teachers, of the administrators? Were his memories of school years so bad that he could not face being in a school building without the comfort of his loaded gun? What if a teacher had to explain that this guy's son or daughter could not take a class at a time the parent thought best? Was he intent on threatening the teachers or the school administration? How did anyone there know that he would not shoot everyone in close enough proximity?

I truly believe that an individual's right to freely of assemble without fear or intimidation should trump the misinterpreted second amendment rights of a person who must have some serious issues. What has happened to us as a people?

    2. That is in essence what these ammosexuals are doing. They think they have the right to trample on everyone else's rights.

      Just like Kim Davis.

Just part of the conservative Right's hubris.

Why don't these assholes who cannot handle their emotions and need to express themselves by killing people, and then by killing themselves, just start right out and shoot themselves first, and leave the other people out of it?

It was not a moment of anger or temporary insanity... something that in a former "golden age" would have been handled with fisticuffs.

This asshole believed that women are chattel, to be possessed, controlled, owned. That is what jealousy is: the fear of losing something that you have a "right" to own. The rage is insecurity that possession is threatened, or the possessed property tainted.

Women are not chattel. And jealousy is not love.
