Former reporter and current blogger, Julia O'Malley wants people to think that Sarah Palin was not always this way. (Spoiler alert: Yes she was.)

Here is a portion of O'Malley's revisionist history courtesy of The Guardian:

There was a time when Sarah Palin was normal by Alaska standards. Way back before the hoopla, and way before she endorsed Donald Trump, she made sense as a politician here. That’s not the case any more.

I’m told she lives in Alaska most of the time, but she’s invisible in public life. But back in the day, I liked her – and so did many in my community. I’m not conservative, but she grew on me when I worked as a reporter in Anchorage in the mid-2000s, and the reason had nothing to do with politics. She was a kind of regular person I recognized as of this place. Tough, funny, pragmatic. She loved Alaska like I did. If you didn’t know her then, it’s hard to explain or believe.

O'Malley then offers this picture, which shows Palin just hobnobbing with the locals and which she believes was NOT a photo-op, that there tells you that she does not understand Sarah Palin.

Above all, Palin was nice. If a reporter called her office, she called back on their cell phone: “Hi, this is Sarah.” Like most people here, she was religious, but didn’t talk about it publicly. Like most people, her family hunted and owned guns, but she didn’t talk too much about that either. She was fuzzy on policy details, but only insiders noticed. She made a big deal about government corruption.

“She wanted to be liked and, as a result, was likable,” said a reporter friend of mine who covered her as governor. “Her only real enemies were white-guy boys club oil politicians who were getting indicted by the feds.”

Okay well there is some truth to this.  Palin absolutely was focused on her polls numbers and receiving positive coverage from media outlets.

So yes she returned calls fairly quickly, IF you were somebody that she perceived to be "on the team."

In fact at one time Dennis Zaki was one of those people, and broke into the news biz to some degree based on his access to Sarah Palin and the number of great photos he took of her and other politicians in Alaska.

However I was there when he lobbed the first criticism her way, and let me tell you the arctic winter has NOTHING on Sarah Palin when it comes to freezing people out.

O'Malley then documents when SHE thinks everything changed for Palin:

I rode along in the motorcade the day she came back to the state to vote. We whizzed out to Wasilla, and she emerged from her black SUV wearing a Carhartt jacket. The outfit was self-conscious. Alaska schtick. Not her thing. But she’d already recalibrated for an audience that wasn’t us. Then John McCain lost. She peaced-out on being governor.

For many here, that was the end.

It’s hard to keep track of what happened next. The internet Sarah-ploded. There was Fox News, reality television, the book, the steady stream of social-media snits, the house in Arizona, a family run-in with the cops and Bristol’s baby-mama drama.

You see the problem with this is that O'Malley seems to be basing most of her Palin-ology on her personal experiences with the then Governor who was seeking positive coverage.

It does not seem that O'Malley has done any real research into Palin's past nor that she has read any of the great books written about her including those written by Geoffrey Dunn, Joe McGinniss,  or even Frank Bailey.

Instead she bases it on her memories, which I find somewhat unreliable as O'Malley was also the reporter who swore up and down that she KNEW that Sarah Palin was indeed pregnant with Trig, and that there was no conspiracy:

But, of course, there was no silence spiral. The journalists, including me, who covered Palin at the time believed she was pregnant because she was pregnant. Even before the announcement, she seemed to be putting on weight. She wore baggy jackets and scarves. Before the announcement, she acted nervous when photographers tried to take her picture. Later on, her face filled out. Her fingers swelled. She had a noticeable belly. And it wasn't made out of foam.

Palin also ran all the time at the gym in Juneau. People I know saw her on the treadmill sweating in workout clothes. She had a belly. I repeat: she had a real pregnant belly. Are you going to tell me she was wearing a prosthetic abdomen on the treadmill?

For the record Palin has ALWAYS been a conniving opportunist who manipulated the weak willed around her and savaged her critics at every turn.

She used her feminine wiles to seduce male reporters and her girl power BS to win over the female journalists. And that seemed to work well here in Alaska, where let's face it journalism is not exactly breaking new ground.

However all of that came to a halt when a certain Katie Couric asked the innocuous question "What do you read?"

THAT was the beginning of the end, and THAT was when everybody started to see the true Sarah Palin.

Somebody it seems that Julia O'Malley never got the chance to meet.

It's a long way back, I guess, for someone who aided Palin and wrote nice things about her like she wanted. It's not so much about the end of Palin as much as it is the end of those reporters who sucked up and kept secrets for her all these years. Long, long way back to regaining any credibility.

It's got to be hard for many Palin supporters and republicans to realize that they were all part of the con. Not only are they finally forced to deal with the joke called Sarah Palin and family but now they have to face the fact that Trump is a Republican with Democratic principles and Cruz in a foreigner.

It's been surreal watching their constituency go through the seven stages of grief as the reality and failure of their party's fear-based strategies (more recently known as the Republican Primaries) continue to sink in.
      1. Shock - initial paralysis at hearing the news
      2. Denial - trying to avoid the inevitable
      3. Anger - frustrated outpouring of bottled-up emotion
      4. Bargaining - seeking (in vain) for a way out
      5. Depression - final realization of the inevitable
      6. Testing - seeking realistic solutions
      7. Acceptance - finally finding the way forward

      Entertaining but sad.

Not a photo op. She's dressed casual but is all made up from the neck up. She's even got her contouring blush on. Of course it's a it was planned. I wish we could see the whole aisle. I'd love to know if Sarah had a cart there somewhere. I mean, what was she there to buy? She's got a baby in her arms. How can she buy anything? Is Todd following close behind with a cart or hand basket plus a baby carrier or stroller?

Julia O'Malley believes Sarah Palin when she boasts that she boarded a transcontinental flight after a amniotic fluid leak for a premature Down Syndrome baby without a medical check when she was high risk (over 40, 7th pregnancy, history of miscarriage), then by-passed neonatal Intensive Care Unit equipped hospitals to supposedly be induced to give birth in a small hospital not even rated to handle twins and attended by a doctor that is not qualified to handle high risk births and rarely handles any births.

Julia O'Malley thinks that scenario is acceptable... because Julia O'Malley is an idiot.

Julia's mother and father are the only reason she was ever given a job at the then Anchorage Daily News. She was brought on at the News as a teen as their "teen voice intern" and then she went to college, where she obviously studied within a field other than journalism, and then came home to a job with the Anchorage Daily News, now Anchorage Dispatch News.

She's just a privileged Anchorage kid who has never had to work for anything in her life. Her parents are rather liberal though, not sure how she ended up being a conservative Palin supporter, especially as she is a lesbian, as most LGBT in Anchorage are liberal since the conservative town government has historically trampled any rights they might enjoy.

That is exactly why I believe the official story - it makes Palin look so much worse than the other. Officially, Palin recklessly endangered the fetus in order to get back to Alaska. WTF? Was she deliberately attempting to induce a stillbirth so she wouldn't have to raise a Down Syndrome baby? I don't mean to disparage the hospitals in Alaska, but I doubt the level of care is that much better than what she could have received locally.

At least there is some dignity in protecting her daughter's reputation by pretending the child was hers. It's about 60 years out of date, and pretty much made moot because Bristol's pregnancy was announced during the campaign, but modernity and competence aren't exactly Palin hallmarks. It's not like it was all that rare an occurance back in the 50's and earlier.

      Delete
    5. Arakasi - I hadn't thought of that before. It's plausible. Not only does she not have to bother with a DS child, she gets sympathy for the miscarriage, and maybe a tubal ligation to boot.

Would she have worn a "prosthetic abdomen on the treadmill"? Oh, yes, Julia O'Malley, she would have.

Any psychopath who lies for a living would do that. She would easily be able to put a foam form under her clothes, eat more to put on a few more pounds, to get the attention she craves and to get in power.

She has betrayed every conservative principle and endorsed Donald Trump. She has traded in her 'values' for a candidate that is a dangerous man, who enjoys having protesters thrown out of the audience, and who enjoys threatening to sue those who report truths.

I would love for Julia O'Malley to explain how why a sitting governor would carelessly and recklessly endanger her unborn child the way she described with her wild ride from Texas to Alaska. Would Julia like to offer her thoughts on that?

There is something called DUPER'S DELIGHT that's one of Sarah's tells. It's something liars do. Remember her grin as she swatted the square pillow under her stomach in that film made by an Israeli filmmaker? She went on camera wearing a pillow & grinned about it! You BET she wore padding to work out in a gym. And then grinned! She gets a psychotic thrill out of duping others.

    Dear Julia,

I don't know what planet you live on, or if you've even bothered to do 3 hours research on what Sarah Palin really is underneath the painted exterior.

She is first and foremost an incessant and manic sociopath, who is completely and totally obsessed with money, fame, and her enemies list, which consists of hundreds of people who have slighted or wronged her in even trivial ways.

She has been a truly terrible parent, letting those kids grow up as a pack of feral dogs, fending for themselves while mommy gets her glamour.

You want a good example of $arah?

in 1995 she lied to her husband about her schedule, and drove

to Anchorage just to be able to see Ivanka Trump.

    QUote:.

Sarah Palin, a commercial fisherman from Wasilla, told her husband on Tuesday she was driving to Anchorage to shop at Costco. Instead, she headed straight for Ivana. And there, at J.C. Penney's cosmetic department, was Ivana, the former Mrs. Donald Trump, sitting at a table next to a photograph of herself. She wore a light-colored pantsuit and pink fingernail polish. Her blonde hair was coiffed in a bouffant French twist.

''We want to see Ivana,'' said Palin, who admittedly smells like salmon for a large part of the summer, ''because we are so desperate in Alaska for any semblance of glamour and culture.''

There is its right there. DESPERATE FOR ANY SEMBLANCE OF GLAMOUR AND CULTURE. As though being a spoiled, pampered brat from New York was a worthy goal.

Your meme about how $arah was so different back then is utterly false.

She was, and still is a narcissist of the first water, all about how much money, fame, glamour, and self serving attention she can garner.

That's the sole reason she latched on to Trump, and he was stupid enough to fall for it.

Soon enough Trump will regret the day he gave her one second of stage time.

4:47 I agree with you about the Ivana Trump thing being no big deal and should fade away. Or at least become a "cute" anecdote.

      1) Sarah was a lot younger back then. Let's not hold our younger days against us if they weren't illegal.

      2) Alaska was a lot different back then. No cells, no computers, no Internet, no cable, and for many areas no TV.

      3) Wasilla is a drive through town now, but was even smaller and hicky-er back then (hard to believe hicky-er, but true).

      4) Alaska was not known for its glamour back then. Even now it's hard to find a good reason to get dressed up in rural communities.

      5) And as you said, being a stay-at-home mom, stuck with whiny kids, while dad was off on the slope, made life hard for one who wanted bigger things.

I say, cut us all some slack and don't put much weight on the Ivana Trump need for glamour thing.

Now, how ironic, though that there she is seeking the "glamour" of hanging out with The Donald.

That we can call what it is and that's just a sick, self-serving need to feel like she's a VP candidate and a chance to grift for her PAC.

She is a stupid fraud and failure as a mother who SCREAMS she is a grizzly mama.
She did not feed, clean on nurture those children.

The Ivanka story is trivial and not trivial. I've had the misfortune of spending most of my professional career in proximity to a NPD queen who reminds me of Palin in many ways, although she's far more intelligent. Although the NPD was on more full display as she got older, looking back it's clear the seeds were there all along, including taking every possible opportunity to seek the limelight, and a special kind of giddiness over any brush with celebrity, hers or other people's. Sarah Palin's pathologies did not spring up overnight when she started to gain power, they only got out of hand when she gained power. The seeds of her twisted, malignant personality were always there.

Ah yes, memories, 8:16. I remember the Bush station that ran limited hours and played a hodgepodge network programming and local news and of course football games. Fond memories. Sad ones: because we were listening to a football game with snowy reception one night we heard about the death of John Lennon. I was the only kid who showed up to school the next day wearing black in his honor (in Cordova). The other kids seemed utterly disconnected from the news and I remember distinctly how they called The Rolling Stone a druggie/stoner magazine: as in only a certain crowd read it. Weird. I remember giving a kid a very What the Hell Are You Talking About Look when he saw me reading one and gleefully informed me of that fact. I was the complete outsider unfortunately - came up from Arizona, not a favorite place in my memory - but left to finish school back down there. Rough, awful years by the way.

Does anyone know what the plan is after the 26th? Well, one thing's for certain. If Trump doesn't want her campaigning again, the death will make for a good way for Sarah to spin things into having a need to be home.

There is a certain segment of the Alaska population that as you say, "need something with the snow, it's cold. They need something to get going."

I argue that it has little to do with the snow and more to do with some of the types of people that end up settling here; the pipeline construction brought a lot of them up here and some of them ended up staying. Rednecks from the South, from Texas from Oklahoma they came north, brought their rowdy redneck ways and unfortunately didn't go back home.

Most of us do just fine, hauling out of the house to do our morning runs, in the dark, cold or even snow, without resorting to any substances.

Alaska does have problems with substance abuse; part of it is the complete vulnerability of the Alaska Native population to the effects of alcohol. There is also a great number of party types up here. They are "proud rednecks", which I think Levi and his family self-identify as. The raise hell, drink hard, ride snow machines and ATVs, suffice it to say, you'll never run into one on a hiking trail or while cross country skiing. They are a type and Alaska is full up with them, but they are not ALL of us and they don't represent the entire state.

Julia is a brilliant writer, but part of the reason Palin is still on the national scene. All Alaska media were derelict in duty (as were national media) in giving Palin a pass despite SO many indications that she was unfit for duty.

Julia, as a former, longtime writer for the Anchorage Daily News, (now Alaska Dispatch News) fell under Sarah's spell, which was easy to do. Despite Sarah's black heart, $he is very charismatic and can bamboozle the best of them.

Julia and other AK reporters dutifully reported how Sarah claimed per diem as gov while living at home ... how she had to pay back the state for fraudulently billing for her kids' travel expenses ... how she/Todd failed to pay taxes on their Big Lake cabin/property ... but totally failed to dig into the many, many sordid signs of deceit that were right under their noses ---- especially the "Wild Ride" and other questions surrounding $arah's "pregnancy" (and Bristol's).

Julia is spot on in many ways in this article, but it's a fluff piece with so many omissions.

Palin attending editorial meetings at the ADN? That doesn't make sense at all - she helped direct how they wrote their editorials? Come on!!! Even the ADN wouldn't allow that!!! Would they? Haha! Sarah Palin was never employed by them!

O'Malley misses Troopergate showing Palin as an abuser of power and practiced liar (Todd, also, too)...and not a 'nice' lady.

Troopergate blew up when the audio of Bailey's phone call was made public. That was about 1-2 weeks before McCain wisked Palin away from AK to the campaign trail. Just imagine if Palin never ran for VP. I'd say impeachment would have been a pretty sure thing.

Watch the KTVA report for the Bailey audio, video Bailey lying in an interview, an interview with Monegan, video of Todd and Sarah lying, etc.. Oh, and at the end, they display the results of a KTVA web poll:
"Do you believe Gov. Palin when she says she knows nothing about those phone calls?"
    12.15% Yes
    87.84% No

If I remember correctly, Julia O'Malley did ONE thing right: Isn't she the person who first reported on the Palin family drunken brawl? If so, I gotta appreciate her for that.

Otherwise, fuck her. That column she wrote is bullshit, and the piece she wrote years ago about how Granny was ABSOLUTELY pregnant and that Trig Truthers are misogynists (!) really pissed me off. Thank goodness the paper (Guardian, too, I believe) published Kathleen's excellent rebuttal.

      LMFAO!!!

Julia O'Malley broke the Beatdown at the Hoedown?

Wait till Sarah hears about that. O'Malley will be on the Palin shitlist...WAIT

Amanda Coyne broke the brawl story. Isn't she now a speechwriter for Sarah's favorite Buckeye Senator Dan Sullivan? Aka Dan from Ohio?

Nope. Coyne is "Speechwriter and Senior Advisor to US Senator Dan Sullivan!"

Like they say, "Alaska is a very small place" or somewhat like whatnot.

      Bwahahahahaha.

I sit corrected. Yes, Amanda Coyne. So double-fuck Julia O'Malley.

Also, too, I didn't realize she's gay, so I suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility that she also experienced those "little starbursts" that "mesmerized" Rich Lowry.

"I’m told she lives in Alaska most of the time, but she’s invisible in public life."

That's because Sarah is scared shitless when she comes back from the lower 48. Sarah knows she is hated in Alaska. There was a conference in Wasilla with several big name Republicans from the lower 48 that Sarah followed around in the lower 48. But when a conference was held at Wasilla's Curt Menard Hockey Rink which is walking distance from Sarah's house, Sarah was named to be there but Sarah was a no show. How many book tours did Sarah have in Wasilla or any where in Alaska? Sarah is embarrassed that the media will take pictures showing Sarah is not liked here so she stays in seclusion when she's in Alaska.

Sarah is never invited to do anything anywhere in Alaska and none of the PayMe's show their faces in the state. They skulk around and have others do their grocery shopping, etc.

But I'd like to add Todd's part in creating Sarah's charade. His wife was the first whore he pimped. Sec sells and sex = power. He sure capitalized on that concept.

No wonder the kids are a mess. Look at their role models and parent teachers. Led to contorted psyches and affluenza.

I'm glad to see that there are some new articles online tonight regarding Palin's lying about Track's "combat" and what a GOP vet has to say about her use of PTSD. The Palins were able to dodge a lot over the past few days because of the constant storm coverage and the NFL playoffs. And there was a death in the family. There were reasons for them to be quiet and let themselves be forgotten for a while. But thanks to Tina Fey, it didn't quite happen! And of course Trump made that insane comment about what would happen if he shot someone. Tomorrow the news will spend a lot of time talking about getting the east coast up and running again, but I do hope that some more scrutinizing of the Palins happens. She doesn't deserve to be let off the hook.

Sarah may have fooled enough people in Alaska so that she managed to be elected governor. And, she managed to fool people in Alaska into thinking that she was doing a good job when people who worked for her did all of the work while she took all of the credit.

Sorry, nice folks in Alaska, but when we got a look at Sarah down her in the lower 48, she couldn't pass the test. It wasn't what book do you read? (Answer, Sarah, it's the Bible). Katy asked Sarah what other Supreme Court decision she disagreed with besides Roe v. Wade. The answer should have been Exxon-Valdez, which did not nearly pay for the damages of that terrible oil spill. Oil, can't say anything bad about God's gift of gas and oil.

Sarah must have dazzled the local reporters, but it didn't take much for people to see what an idiot she was (and still is). If anything, Sarah has just gotten worse.

Nobody (journalists) truly vetted her when she ran for Governor in Alaska.

Previous Governor Wally Hickel endorsed her and every one seemed to go for her because of it! (He later turned on her because she threw him under the bus!) If you can believe it, he actually threw her inauguration party at his Captain Cook Hotel! Remember, Alaskans?

And, it was so obvious John McCain's crew didn't vet her either.

She's a piece of ca-ca and all are finally well informed today - all these years later! Damn, but Americans are stupid as shit when it comes to casting their votes!

Real vet's are not standing for her bullshit and that includes my husband a real combat First Cav infrantry Vietnam vet who lost his hearing in his left ear due to shelling and gets very little in disability because of it.Did Track ever have to kill anyone? Shut the "F" up Sarah.I personally would be more than happy to see you get your ass or Bristols ass on the front line to "Kick Isis ass".

And no we can't stand by and let terrorist's get away with their crap. But how dare you take the honor and the sacrifice away from real combat vets who were really in knee deep in the shit! Look your spoiled kid was home more often than he was "In the shit". It's insulting and to use PSTD as an excuse for your poorly raised kids behavoir , it's really low, snakes can't even crawl as low as you.

My husband came home with a bronze medal and a fear of being in crowds. Your son came home to a famous Mom and a reason to sit on his ass and take her money.

"F" you! What the hell have you ever done for vets? besides some photo op or use them as an excuse for your brats behavior? Real combat vets ain't buying it Palin and are insulted that you are portraying them as wife- girlfriend abusers. Those who have taken a life know the value of life.

Actually O'Malley's mother, Sheila Selkregg, a former Anchorage Assembly member, was often lambasted as being "too liberal" or a socialist. Not sure where Julia inherited her love of Sarah Palin as I can't see her mother being a supporter.

I have no doubt that if you only met Palin in social situations or any other context where she didn't feel threatened, you would think she is the most charming, likable person around.

That's how she drew people into her world. Once you're in her circle, you start sharing her us against them drama and you're making Yahoo email accounts to keep your work off government servers and helping to get ex-brothers in law fired.

If you don't cross her, I'm sure she's awesome. As thin as her skin is though, it's surprising that this reporter never saw her true demeanor.

  69. I hate to say this, but Palin does look like a post-partum mess in this supermarket picture.
I have always been open to the theory that she faked Trig's birth, but looking at her stomach and the choice of outfit, she doesn't look like she does in the posed photos.

It wasn't a choice of an outfit. It's a traditional native dress she wore for a photo op. No offense to the Yup'ik people, but a drop waist shirt like that would make anyone but a tall, leggy model look postpartum.
