Two South Carolina politicians want to erect a monument honoring African Americans who fought for the Confederacy. Problem is there weren't any.

Two South Carolina lawmakers want to erect a monument on the State House grounds to African-Americans who served the state as Confederate soldiers. But records show the state never accepted nor recognized armed African-American soldiers during the Civil War.

“In all my years of research, I can say I have seen no documentation of black South Carolina soldiers fighting for the Confederacy,” said Walter Edgar, who for 32 years was director of the University of South Carolina’s Institute for Southern Studies and is author of “South Carolina: A History.”

“In fact, when secession came, the state turned down free (blacks) who wanted to volunteer because they didn’t want armed persons of color,” he said.

Pension records gleaned from the S.C. Department of History and Archives show no black Confederate soldiers received payment for combat service. And of the more than 300 blacks who did receive pensions after they were allowed in 1923, all served as body servants or cooks, the records show.

Confederate law prohibited blacks from bearing arms in the war, records show, until that edict was repealed in 1865 at the very end of the conflict.

Did you just slap your forehead in disbelief at how ignorant these two individuals are? Because I certainly did.

Yes I am sure the line was quite long for black folks anxious to join the army fighting to preserve slavery, because damn they loved them some slavery.

This is why education is so damn important.

It helps to prevent the creation of more ignorant Republicans.

“Body Servants”? That sounds so Romanesque.

No, Gryph, I did not slap my forehead in disbelief. I used to think that there was a limit to how stupid people could be, but since Donnie Dotard's election, I've come to realize that, unfortunately, conservatives have displayed stupidity to a level that I thought was never possible. What I am amazed at is that these conservatives wear their stupidity as a badge, something to be proud of.

"...This is why education is so damn important...."

Sorry, Gryph, but having grown up in SC, I can tell you that NONE of the history of this sort was made available to us as students. First because too many people would simply have raised holy hell because it was being taught at all and second, because that would have required accurate history teaching.

The south was at that time - and still is to a great extent - convinced their rights were being illegally taken from them, AND that the North was the aggressor. After all, it is called the War of Aggression down here. (And it was, actually, it's just the southerners are convinced THEY were the ones being attacked.)

As long as the repubes are able to continue their destruction of the public school systems - using people like DeVos - there will not be any real education on issues like this.

And as long as there are ignorant fools like those who voted for Humpty Trumpty, there will be no improvement.

I saw this on Finding Your Roots (PBS)...In Louisiana

"Bryant Gumbel learns that his surname comes from a German Jewish community by way of his second great grandfather — a white man who arrived in America midway through the Civil War. He also learns that on a different line of his father’s family, his second great grandfather was a manumitted slave who signed up for the Confederate army in New Orleans, then changed sides when the Union arrived in his city."

Henry Louis Gates is very interesting, it is amazing how many good guests he gets. Quest Love found out his ancestors were on the last slave ship that came to the US.

    Good show.

  6. Well, of course they wouldn’t arm any of those black folks. Not even with sticks and clubs.

But that won’t stop them. They’ll make something up and erect their statue anyway.

Watch it get vandalized over and over, by whites, by blacks, by the right and the left.

    You just can fix stupid.

But sometimes it can be highly amusing.

If you read the Ken Burns history of the Civil War, if the south had armed the blacks, it would have invalidated everything the south stood for.

how dumb can you get? just because the black folk in Gone With the Wind loved being slaves and even fought for the south does'nt make it true.
