Two South Carolina politicians want to erect a monument honoring African Americans who fought for the Confederacy. Problem is there weren't any.

Two South Carolina lawmakers want to erect a monument on the State House grounds to African-Americans who served the state as Confederate soldiers. But records show the state never accepted nor recognized armed African-American soldiers during the Civil War.

“In all my years of research, I can say I have seen no documentation of black South Carolina soldiers fighting for the Confederacy,” said Walter Edgar, who for 32 years was director of the University of South Carolina’s Institute for Southern Studies and is author of “South Carolina: A History.”

“In fact, when secession came, the state turned down free (blacks) who wanted to volunteer because they didn’t want armed persons of color,” he said.

Pension records gleaned from the S.C. Department of History and Archives show no black Confederate soldiers received payment for combat service. And of the more than 300 blacks who did receive pensions after they were allowed in 1923, all served as body servants or cooks, the records show.

Confederate law prohibited blacks from bearing arms in the war, records show, until that edict was repealed in 1865 at the very end of the conflict.

Did you just slap your forehead in disbelief at how ignorant these two individuals are? Because I certainly did.

Yes I am sure the line was quite long for black folks anxious to join the army fighting to preserve slavery, because damn they loved them some slavery.

This is why education is so damn important.

It helps to prevent the creation of more ignorant Republicans.

John Oliver takes on Confederate statues and it is epic.

It has been a while since I watched an episode of Last Week Tonight, but this one is definitely blog worthy.

Not only does Oliver do a great job of undermining the argument for preserving these statues, but the segment also features references to Ben Affleck, Anderson Cooper, Larry David, and Stephen Colbert. (Though to be honest I am not sure that Affleck will appreciate how he is portrayed in the program.)

That is just some damn good cable television right there.

Brian Kilmeade of Fox and Friends suggests that 9-11 memorials are in danger of being removed like Confederate statues.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

During an interview with Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Kilmeade asked if he had any concern about the future security of the Flight 93 National Monument, which he suggested could become a target for activists in the same way that statues of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson have become targets.

“Do you worry 100 years from now someone’s going to try to take that memorial down like they’re trying to remake our memorials today?” he asked.

Zinke didn’t directly respond to Kilmeade’s question, and he only issued a vague platitude about learning from history.

“Well I’m one that believes that you know we should learn from history,” he replied. “And I think our monuments are part of our country’s history. We can learn from it. Since we don’t put up statues of Jesus, everyone’s going to fall morally short.”

I am not sure how having statues of Jesus would make us all moral, but this entire conversation is so stupid that it makes my head ache.

The majority of the Confederate statues were put up between the 1890's and the 1950's to glorify the Civil War and to remind Black folks that people fought and died to keep them in slavery.

That is not even remotely like building a monument to those who died in the biggest terrorist attack in American history.

Just the very fact that this has to be explained to the host of a cable news program suggests that Fox News should be removed from the airwaves to preserve the intelligence of the American people.

White Nationalists in Kentucky plan super secret protest against the removal of Confederate statues.

Courtesy of the Lexington Herald-Leader:

White nationalist groups might hold a flash demonstration in Lexington to protest moving two Confederate statues from the lawn of the former Fayette County courthouse instead of a publicly announced rally, according to an organizer.

Matthew Heimbach, chairman of a white nationalist group called the Traditionalist Worker Party, told the Herald-Leader last week that his group and others were planning a rally in Lexington to oppose the removal of statues in downtown Lexington. When asked this week whether he had picked a date for the event, though, Heimbach said it probably will be a “flash demo.”

He confirmed that that meant an event with no public announcement of the time or place.

“As long as we don’t block the street, we should be OK,” Heimbach said.

Heimbach's fear apparently is that if they publicize the protest that counter protesters will show up and say mean things about them until they get their little traitorous feelings hurt.

You may also remember that 37 pro-Trump rallies were called off over fear of conflicts.

Much like the confederate soldiers that they seem to emulate these men are clearly ready to wave the white flag before there is a chance of any real conflict.

I am not sure that these people in Kentucky clearly understand the purpose of a protest.

The whole idea is to draw attention, including media attention, to your cause.

I don't think that a super secret, over in a flash, rally has any real chance of accomplishing that.

You know these racists actually could just all stay home and then claim online that they HAD a rally, thousands showed up, and nobody got hurt.

Just a thought.

Donald Trump gets the sads about losing all of those "beautiful statues and monuments" to the traitors who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War.

Yeah those statues must seem really beautiful, unless of course you happen to be a black person whose ancestors were slaves in this country, or even a white person whose ancestor gave their life to defend this country against an army that rose up to battle for the right to keep human beings as property.

But to others who are not among those clearly prejudice folks, I am sure the statues and monuments must seem awesome.

I have been hearing for months now that Steve Bannon was the representative of the Alt-Right racists in the White House, but based on the interview that I posted earlier, and these tweets, I am beginning to firmly believe that the head Nazi in the White House is Trump himself.

Remember this:

Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler's collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed.

I guess this was Hitler's long game.

Sure he lost the 2nd World War, but now after more than 70 years one of his followers is finally in charge of America.

And the Republicans helped him do it.

Defending Confederate monuments while shouting the "N" word, must be the South.

It is always a challenge to try and defend a racist symbol by being incredibly racist, but these guys seem to be pulling it off.
